Blues win back-to-back games with 3-2 victory over Western
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team won their second of a three game road trip to open the new year, dropping the Western Mustangs 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Blues improve to 7-1-5-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and sit in a three-way tie for fourth in the OUA standings.
Western opened the scoring midway through the first period as forward Rachel Armstrong slid the puck past Varsity Blues goaltender Katey Teekasingh on the short side to jump ahead 1-0.
However, just three minutes later perennial scoring threat Taylor Day evened the game with a beautiful breakaway goal after forcing a Mustangs turnover for the shorthanded opportunity.
Tied 1-1 in the second, Shaelynn Waite fired a rocket past Mustangs goalie Katie Jacobs to lift the Blues into the lead heading into the third period. The goal marked the second of the season for the rookie defenceman after picking up her first career OUA goal this past Wednesday (Jan. 4) in the Blues 3-2 win over Windsor.
Seven minutes into the final frame Western forward Megan Taylor restored a 2-2 tie, tipping in a strong Mustangs shot from the slot.
It would only take 90 seconds though for Day to restore the U of T lead, finishing off a tape-to-tape pass from Kristi Riseley for her second goal of the game and eventual game-winner. Day now has five points over the last two games for Toronto scoring three goals, including two game-winners, while picking up two assists.
Teekasingh earned her second win of the season in her second straight start making 21 saves.
The Varsity Blues will end their road trip in St. Catharines, Ontario when they face off with the Brock Badgers on Friday, January 13. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. with the game streamed live on OUA.tv.

Nauboris nets a hat-trick as UOIT beats Laurentian 6-5
SUDBURY, Ont. – Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) recorded a hat-trick including scoring the overtime winner as the UOIT women's hockey team beat Laurentian 6-5 in Sudbury.
Earning their fourth straight win and second of the weekend, UOIT (4-3-4-3) jumps into seventh place in the OUA standings.
One minute into overtime, Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) streaked down the ice and fed the puck to Nauboris in the slot who buried the game-winner. This was the third-year winger's first career OUA hat-trick as she capped off a six-point weekend, having recorded three assists in UOIT's 4-3 victory over the No. 7 ranked Nipissing Lakers on Saturday.
Laurentian and UOIT combined for 11 goals, the most scored in any OUA game this season.
It looked as if the Ridgebacks were going to win in regulation after Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) gave UOIT a 5-4 lead at 13:45 of the third. With 39 seconds left and the Voyageurs net empty, Taylor Weber managed to beat UOIT goaltender Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) to send the game into overtime.
Despite UOIT scoring six goals, Forchielli was the only other Ridgeback besides Nauboris to have a multi-point game as she ended up with a goal and an assist. Shanelle Doucette (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Nicole Augello (Bolton, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for UOIT. Augello's second period goal was the first of her OUA career.
With an assist in the first period, Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) extended her point streak to six games. Cavell extended her point streak to five games with an assist on the overtime winner.
Laurentian outshot UOIT 42-27, as Hughes made 37 saves in her fourth win of the season. Hughes is 4-1 in five starts of her freshman campaign.
UOIT will put their win-streak on the line at home next Saturday against the first-place Guelph Gryphons followed by a game against the York Lions on Sunday. Both games will be themed "Pink at the Rink" as the Ridgebacks join team Emma and fundraise for the SickKids foundation.
Puck drop for both games at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.

Lions hold off Golden Hawks with shootout victory
The York University Lions women's hockey team bounced back after allowing a late third-period goal to earn a 3-2 shootout victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, Ont., on Sunday night.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead at 14:16 of the final frame on a power play goal by team captain Amy Locke (Toronto) and looked like they were going to hold on for the win. But with less than two minutes remaining, the Golden Hawks tied the game when Jaden Head found the back of the net.
After two scoreless overtime frames, the shootout went to a fourth round before a winner was determined. York goaltender Lauren Dubie (London, Ont.) and Laurier netminder Amanda Smith each stopped the first three shooters they faced, but Justine Treadwell (Huntsville, Ont.) scored on her attempt and Dubie again stood tall for the last shooter to give the Lions the win.
Laurier's late goal represented the second time in the contest they had equalled the score after the Lions pulled ahead. York opened the scoring just 2:47 into the game on Sarah Power's (Caledon, Ont.) second goal in as many games and the Lions carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Midway through the second the Golden Hawks tied it on a goal by Emily Woodhouse, putting the score at 1-1 where it would remain until Locke's marker in the third.
The Lions improved to 2-2-7-4 with the victory and have 14 points in the OUA standings. Laurier picked up a single point by getting the game to the shootout and remain at the bottom of the conference with seven points.
The Lions will be on the road next weekend, first travelling downtown to face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday evening (Jan. 14) at 7pm before heading to Oshawa, Ont., on Sunday (Jan. 15) for a game against the UOIT Ridgebacks beginning at 3:30pm.
