Tienhaara's hat trick leads Lakers to win
To be a successful team, you need different players to step up at different times and that's exactly what the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team got Sunday.
Led by their veteran goalie and third-year captain, the Lakers made it a perfect weekend on the road, as they topped the Western Mustangs 3-1.
Leading the way was Kaley Tienhaara, who recorded a hat-trick, scoring all three Nipissing goals, and goalie Jackie Rochefort, who made 26 saves for the win.
Tienhaara entered the game with just one goal on the season, although she had 10 points, but stepped up big time in the goal department, helping the Lakers to their 12th win of the season.
Tienhaara scored her first of three in the first period, the opening frame's lone goal as she grabbed the puck and made no mistake in tight.
Taylor McManus picked up the assist on the opening goal.
Western would tie the game in the second period, as the team's finished 40 minutes even at one, with the shots favouring the Mustangs 13-8.
Tienhaara would complete the hat-trick, which included the game-winner and an empty-netter in the third, as she was all the offence Nipissing would need.
McManus earned her second assist of the game, as well as Alexane Papineau and Laura McKenzie, who drew assists on the two third period goals.
Rochefort won her second straight start, making 26 saves, including 14 in the final period.
Nipissing improves to 12-2-2 on the season and sits five points back of Guelph with a game in hand.
The Lakers will return to home ice for four straight games, beginning with Toronto and Ryerson next weekend, on Friday and Saturday night.

Lions explode for six goals in victory over Ridgebacks
The York University Lions women's hockey team travelled to UOIT to face off in a Sunday afternoon battle and leaned on a huge first period where three goals were scored to coast to a huge 6-2-road win over the Ridgebacks.
Just over two minutes into the opening period the Lions drew first blood. First-year forward Christina Chin (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored a goal at 2:03 with the assists credited to Kelsey McHolm (Winnipeg) and Jenna Gray (London, Ont.).
Only two minutes later the Ridgebacks got on the board themselves, but at 12:21 of the frame Chin beat the goaltender for the second time in the period. Cynthia St-Cyr (New Liskeard, Ont.) and McHolm were credited with the assists. To cap off an exceptional first period from the Lions offence, second-year forward Tegan Duncan (Oakville, Ont.) scored off of an assist from Erin Locke (Toronto) and St-Cyr and the Lions led by a score of 3-1.
Entering the second period UOIT had a lot of ground to make up if they wished to keep the game competitive. The Ridgebacks looked like they were on their way when Kassidy Nauboris scored 15 minutes into the period, but McHolm took the wind out of UOIT's sails as she scored only one minute after Nauboris on an unassisted goal.
Amy Locke (Toronto) scored a goal of her own to add to the Ridgebacks' blues. The assists on Locke's goal were attributed to Chelsea Tucker (Alliston, Ont.) and Duncan, and the Lions led 5-2 after two periods.
In the third period York goaltender Eva Hall (Main-A-Dieu, N.S.) continued her dominant play, standing tall and finishing the game with 30 saves. Once the Ridgebacks pulled their goalie the Lions put the cherry on top with an unassisted empty net goal from Dana Somerville (Hockley, Ont.) to seal the victory.
With the victory the Lions now hold a 3-2-8-4 record on the season. Their next game will take place on Saturday when the Windsor Lancers travel to Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
