OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: ROOKIES HELP EXTEND LIONS WIN STREAK TO 11
The Lions came out roaring in the first set, taking a 8-3 lead before the Lakehead coach tried to stem the tide by taking their first timeout. However, the Lions, led by rookie Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.), continued their momentum, taking the first set 25-11.
The second set was more closely contested, with the game being tied at 17 apiece. However, the Lions regained their grip on the game to close out the set, going on a 8-4 run to take the set 25-21.
In the third, Lions head coach Arif Nathoo decided to test the strength of the bench by resting many of the starters. However, the change made no difference the direction of the game as the Lions once again outplayed their opponents in every department to take the set and the match 25-15.
The Lions were led by fantastic performances by rookies Kristina Vlcek (Toronto, Ont.), who had 12 kills in the game and Gina Morphy (Ottawa, Ont.), who had 19 assists.
The Lions continue their regular season on Thur., Jan. 15 (6 p.m.) when they face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues on the road.
