MURRAY, TETZLAFF AND MALTAIS TEST ENDURANCE IN TRENTON
Tetzlaff of Trenton, Ont. and Murray of Ajax, Ont. took part in the 'Tinmate' category, which consisted of 7.5-km road run, four-km kayak, 15-km road bike, five-km cross-country run, 10-km mountain bike, 7.5-km road run, 500-metre swim and 3-km run to the finish. Tetzlaff, a member of the Lady Vees cross-country and indoor track team, ran each of the four running legs. Murray, the three-year veteran of the Voyageurs swim team, competed in the kayak, swimming and biking stages.
Tetzlaff continued her form that saw her claim cross-country team most valuable player in 2008; she averaged four minute 33 seconds per kilometre pace. Her times also made her the fastest runner of her category in each of the legs.
Murray struggled early with the kayak stage but was able to re-group and get the mixed pair into striking position, where Tetzlaff was able to run into the lead. The mountain bike stage saw the pair lose ground, when once again Tetzlaff was able to run down the leaders. In his final stage, Murray was able to use his experience in the pool to propel the pair to the lead and hand it off to Tetzlaff who crossed the finish line.
The victory took three hours and 43 minutes to complete and the tandem won the mixed division while finishing 13th overall out of the 66-team field.
Laurentian swimmer and female athlete of the year Brittany Maltais of Charlottetown also competed in the gruelling competition. She swam the swim leg in a division of eight-person teams, finishing with the second fastest time on the day.
"It was a lot of fun and really hard work," said Murray. "I'm happy that Gracie and I were able to compete and be successful in this test of endurance."
The Laurentian athletes will continue their hard work and training over the summer as they prepare for the 2009-10 varsity seasons.
