LAURIER DOMINATES EAST SECTIONALS AT TORONTO
The Men's OUA curling season opened with the East Sectionals hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues at the High Park Curling Club.
In the 1st draw, the Golden Hawks and Trent Excalibur played a very close game with both teams playing aggressive. Deuces were traded in the 1st and 2nd , a single in the 3rd and a steal in the 4th by the Hawks result in the Hawks ups by 2 at the 4th end break. The Excalibur Men came back with a single in the 5th and a big steal of 2 in the 6th, putting the Excalibur up by 1 after 6 ends of play. In the 7th, the Hawks scored a very important duce putting them up by 1. In the 8th, the Hawks, without hammer needed to set the end up to prevent a deuce against them. With strong shot making from the front-end freshman Scott McGregor and junior Paul Arkilander, the Hawks gave up 1 to set the stage for an extra end. With vice Senior Bill Francis continuing to play at his highly skilled level, and freshman skip Mike Anderson sealing the end, the Hawks took 1 to win the game at 7-6.
In the 2nd draw, the Golden Hawks played their long time rivals Queens Golden Gaels. The Hawks game out strong, scoring 2 in the 1st and steals of singles in the 2nd and 3rd being set up by freshman Mathew Mapletoff throwing lead. The Golden Gaels came back with their own 3 in the 4th , resulting in the score after 4 ends, Hawks 4, Gaels 3. A deuce with the hammer in 5 by the Hawks, Gaels blanking 6 and a big steal of 1 in the 7th by the Hawks sealed the game. Final score was 7-3 for the Hawks.
The 3rd draw played Sunday morning featured the Hawks against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Varsity Blues came out shooting, taking 1 in the 1st and a steal of 1 in the 2nd. In the 3rd end, the final stone from the Hawks was a major Team decision, draw for 1 or elect a very difficult hit for 3. The Team decided to go for the hit, it was made with excellent power sweeping and precision line calling. This proved to be a major swing in momentum, as the Hawks stole 1 in the 4th resulting in a 4-2 lead after 4 ends of play. With the Varsity blue taking 1 in the 5th, the Hawks came back with a deuce in 6 lead by the Hawks lead, freshman Dave Kaun. Having control of the game, the Hawks highly skilled and very knowledgeable freshman skip Mike Anderson did not allow the Varsity blues back into the game. Final score, Hawks 6, Varsity blues 4 resulting in the Hawks record of 3-0 at the close of the East sectionals.

Women's Curling:
In the 1st draw, the Golden Hawks and Trent Excalibur played a very close game with both teams playing aggressive. With Trent scoring a 4 ender in the 2nd end, the Hawks needed to regroup as this year the format has been change to playing 8 ends. A big steal of 3 in the 4th end by the Hawks allowed the Hawks to have a 5-4 lead at the 4th end break. With the Excalibur ladies taking a deuce in the 5th and singles scored in the remaining ends, the game was tied at 7 all after 8 ends of play. In the extra end, the Hawks not having hammer needed to steal. Excellent shot making by the front end, freshman Alex Hughes and freshman Danielle Inglis allowed the Hawks to put pressure on Excalibur team. With our vice, sophomore Laura Hickey throwing perfect guards, the stage was set for the skip, Junior Hollie Nicol to seal the end with a perfect draw. The Hawks stole the end winning 8-7 over Trent.

With the Gaels scoring a 4 ender in the 2nd end, the Hawks need to come back strong to stay in the game. With a big 3 ender in the 3rd and a steal in the 4th end by the Hawks, the Hawks lead by 5-4 at the 4th end break. A steal in the 5th by the Hawks and a single in the 6th and a steal in the 7th by the Golden Gaels put the game tied after 7 ends at 6 all. With the Hawks having hammer coming home, lead freshman Hilary McDermott set the end up with perfect draws which resulted in the Hawks taking 2, final score 8-6 for the Hawks. This brings their record to 2-0.

The Varsity blues game back with their own 2 ender in the 2nd. With a deuce in the 3rd by the Hawks and a single in the 4th by the Blues, the Hawks had a 4-3 lead at the 4th end break. The Blues stole 1 in the 5th end and the Hawks took 1 in the 6th end. Continuing on with very aggressive strategy and second Junior Erica Butler playing at her normal high level of play, the Hawks stole a big 4 ender in the 7th, to put the game out of reach. Final score 9-5 for the Golden Hawks, bringing their East Sectional record to 3-0.
