OUA MENS RUGBY SEASON OPENS FRIDAY
The defending OUA champion Brock Badgers, who ended the McMaster Marauders’ two-year reign as champions last November, kick off their season on Sunday against RMC. In total, 10 matches will be played over the next three days.
McMaster looked poised to become three-peat champion since 1996-97, but lost a tough 11-5 defensive struggle to Brock in the OUA semi final. The Badgers defeated the Queen’s Gaels 22-6 in the OUA final, giving the school its first men’s rugby title. The Western Mustangs were awarded the bronze medal after edging the Marauders 23-22.
The Turner Trophy, emblematic of men’s rugby dominance in OUA, has been awarded to the Toronto Varsity Blues a record 23 times.
As announced last month, OUA has begun a three-year partnership with Gilbert Canada Inc. as the supplier of the official rugby ball of OUA. Clubs will use the size 5 Gilbert Barbarian Match Play Rugby Ball, which is designed in part to provide outstanding performance in all weather conditions.
The OUA championship will be decided November 8 at Fletcher’s Field in Markham, Ontario.
