OUA ANNOUNCES MEN'S SOCCER ALL-STARS
Eric Tse of the Toronto Varsity Blues was voted as North/South Player of the Year. The third-year Toronto native is the anchor of the Varsity Blues impenetrable defence, which allowed just four goals on the season (an OUA-low, tied with the Carleton Ravens and Western Mustangs). Tse, a first-time major award winner, will be called upon to demonstrate those defensive abilities as the host Blues take on Western in the second of two semi-finals Saturday, November 5.
York Lions first-year goalkeeper Greg Zatulovsky was rewarded for his fine play in net with North/South Rookie of the Year honours. The 6-3 Business and Society major from Maple, ON has brought a towering presence to the York goal and impressed all year with his technique and penchant for making timely saves.
York took two of the three major awards in the North/South, as Lions coach Paul James was named the Coach of the Year by his peers. James led an inexperienced team to a solid 5-2-3 regular season record and a spot in the Final Four against the Carleton Ravens. This is the first time James has been named Coach of the Year.
In the East/West interdivision, Carleton Ravens standout Josh Dewar-Morris has been named Player of the Year. The Ottawa native and former Rookie of the Year in 2002 has become one of the most feared offensive threats in the in the league as he paced the OUA in scoring averaging over a goal per match. Morris’s offensive contributions helped the Ravens to an unbeaten 7-0-3 regular season and a another berth in the Final Four.
Laurier Golden Hawks striker Damir Hadziavdic takes the East/West Rookie of the Year award after putting together a memorable debut season. Hadziavdic, a native of Kitchener, ON, scored eight goals in 10 matches, showing tremendous consistency and finish for a newcomer to the league.
A familiar face has been named East/West Coach of the Year. Carleton coach Sandy Mackie has led his unbeaten Ravens to their third Final Four in four years. Mackie is a three-time Coach of the Year, having also won the award in 1996 and 1994.
