WESTERN TO HOST OUA ROWING FINALS
Ten teams will be competing for the men's and women's championships with Western, Brock and Queen's University entering as the favourites for both team titles.
On the women's side, the host Mustangs will be lead by Jane Rumble who is a former national rowing team member and World Champion. She is favoured to win gold in both the single and doubles events.
The defending champions from Queen's University have served notice to the rest of the women's field, winning a gold medal in the lightweight doubles at the Head of the Trent Regatta and lightweight 8+ at the Western Invitational at Lake Fanshawe earlier this year. The Badgers are coming off of a silver medal performance at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston last weekend. The Badgers were led by their lightweight 4+ made up of Ashley Small, Dianna Aucoin, Alison Carryer, Barb Szybka and cox Karlene Willmott who finished third overall in a time of 14:39.600.
The three time defending men's champions from Brock will attempt to clinch their sixth championship in the past seven years on the waters of Lake Fanshawe. Rookie head coach Peter Somerwil has his Badgers rounding into form after an impressive October that saw them win six medals at the Brock Invitational. Drew Scobie will have a shot at winning a pair of medals on the men's lightweight side in both the single and 8+ events.
Queen's will attempt to win its first title in more than a decade on a course that provided favorable results earlier this season. The Gaels men won a pair of golds (men's lightweight 4+ and 8+) and silver (lightweight 2x) at the Western Invitational in September.
Also competing this weekend will be the Carleton Ravens, Guelph Gryphons, McGill Redmen/Marlets, McMaster Marauders, Ryerson Rams, University of Toronto Varsity Blues and Trent Excalibur.
The event begins Saturday at 8 am.
