BROCK MENS ROWING SELF-DISCLOSES INELIGIBLE PLAYER
Hamilton, ON - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced today that the Brock University Badgers men's rowing team have disclosed they were unknowingly using an ineligible player at the OUA Championship this past fall in London, Ontario. Mr. Clifford Scott's participation was in violation of Rule 2.3.2 of the OUA Unit III Eligibility By-Laws, which states that student-athletes are eligible to compete \"provided they are registered as 'full-time' by the academic regulations of their respective institution.\" Prior to the OUA Championship in late October, Mr. Scott withdrew from a class, falling below the eligibility requirements for an OUA student-athlete. The change in Mr. Scott's transcript was not detected by the Athletic Department.
Thus, the Brock Badgers have forfeited their finishing position of the two races Mr. Scott competed in at the championships - the Men's Heavy 8 and Men's Lightweight 8. As a result, Brock does not record any points in those two races, resulting in a third place finish overall in the final standings. The Queen's University Golden Gaels, who captured the women's title this season, will become the 2004 OUA men's rowing champions.
\"We deeply regret the incident and apologize to the OUA and rowing community,\" commented Lorne Adams, Director of Athletics at Brock University. \"We have already corrected the problem to ensure that it never happens again.\"
The error was caught before the Badgers went on to claim their third straight Canadian University Rowing Championship in early November in Montreal.
Below is a revised version of OUA men's rowing championship final results:
1. Queen's Golden Gaels
