W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Laurier knocks off No. 2 Carleton
Queen’s Gaels @ Western Mustangs
With a four-game losing streak looming over its head, Western Ontario (2-5) weathered a furious second-half comeback attempt by Queen's University to hold on to a 61-58 victory Friday night. Leading the charge for the Mustangs was Laura Dally who charted a team-high 17 points and also pulled down 13 rebounds, eleven of them defensive.
Both squads started the game cold, with neither breaking into the double digits until a Dally jumper from the baseline found the bottom of the net at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter, putting Western ahead 11-7. Dally's basket was the second of a 10-to-nothing run for the Mustangs that ended the first quarter. Rachel Urosevic's 3-pointer midway through the second quarter pulled Queen's University within four points. Subsequent foul shots from Hanna Kopshynska put the visitors ahead by one at the 4:40 mark. The Mustangs went on another late quarter run, this time an 11-to-nothing swing to pull into halftime leading 34-23.
Jenny Vaughan and Emma Nieuwenhuzien combined for eight points in the third quarter to spark Western Ontario to an 11-point spread. However, a furious fourth quarter comeback was capped by a Liz Boag 3-pointer with 3:42 left in the game that put Queen's up by one. Western Ontario responded immediately via a Katelyn Leddy layup which would ignite yet another Western run that would allow it to maintain the lead through the final buzzer. Vaughan's successful charity stripe shots with 11 seconds left in the contest all but iced the victory for the Mustangs.
Dally's 17 points led the way for Western, while Vaughn chipped in 15 and Melissa Rondinelli dropped 13 points through the bucket. Despite a poor shoting night (33.8 percent), the Mustangs held on due in part to forcing Queen's University into 15 turnovers.
Queen's University, which went 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) from beyond the arc, was led by Brittany Moore's 22 points.

Guelph Gryphons @ Laurentian Lady Vees
The Guelph Gryphon women’s basketball team traveled to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Lady Vees tonight (Dec. 2) at the Ben Avey Gym. The Gryphons proved to be too much to handle, and trounced their opponents 80-37.
The win improves the Gryphons record to 3-4 while the Lady Vees drop to 2-5.
Laurentian came out strong with a good zone and press and were able to keep it close for the first few minutes; however, early in the first quarter, the Gryphons broke the press and figured out the Lady Vees zone. The Gryphons led17-8 after the first quarter.
The Gryphons stepped up their defense in the second quarter causing the Lady Vees to turn the ball over, leading to easy fast break points for the Gryphons. The Gryphons took control of the game, stepping up the tempo forcing the Lady Vees to contiune to turn the ball over. The Lady Vees began to gain some momentum going into the half and only trailed by 12, with the score 34-22.
Guelph came out shooting in the third quarter and was able to extend the lead, and the Lady Vees had no answer for the hot shooting Gryphons. The Gryphons were just too much tonight for the Lady Vees as they shot 46.6% from the floor whereas the Lady Vees only shot 23.1%.

Lakehead Thunderwolves @ York Lions
The York University Lions women's basketball team turned a nine-point third quarter deficit into a five point victory with a 69-64 win over the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night (Dec. 2).
It was their third win in a row on the season and improved their record to 4-3, marking the first time they've been over .500 since winning their opener in early November. The Thunderwolves, meanwhile, fall to 3-4.
Brittany Szockyj (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) and Llyandra Kerr (Markham, Ont.) each scored 19 points on the night to lead all players. Szockyj, an OUA East all-star last year and the team captain, also added four points and four assists, while Kerr had seven rebounds and four steals.
Also having a big night was Courtney Osborne (Markham, Ont.). One game after scoring the winning three-pointer in the final seconds of a 52-51 over Laurier, she tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lions opened the scoring with a two-pointer by Osborne and cruised to a 12-7 lead late in the first quarter, but the Thunderwolves chipped away at the lead and narrowed the gap to 14-13 after the first quarter of play.
The Lions continued to hold the lead throughout the second quarter and never trailed in the frame, taking a 26-22 lead into the half.
Things went off the tracks in the third as the Thunderwolves, who had a noticeably bigger team, used their size to their advantage under the basket and scored a number of easy points. Lakehead took its first lead of the game at 29-28, but Osborne sunk another three-pointer on the next possession to give the Lions the lead once again. However, the Thunderwolves tied the game again and then pulled away, thanks in large part to two-time OUA West all-star Lindsay Druery, and outscored the home team 26-13 in the quarter to hold a 48-39 advantage heading into the final frame.
The Lions found their momentum again in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter and Szockyj put them within one with a gorgeous basket that also drew a foul. She nailed the extra point to tie the game, and Kerr gave the Lions the lead again at 54-52. Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.) then sunk four straight foul shots to extend the lead.
With the Lions up 65-61 and time winding down, the Thunderwolves stormed down the court on after an inbounds pass and Kelsey Bardsley sunk a quick three to cut the lead to one, at 65-64. That was as close as they would get, however, as Szockyj drained both foul shots on the next possession and then Qahwash stole the ball after Lakehead's timeout and put the nail in the coffin with the final basket of the game.
Druery was Lakehead's top player on the night, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Waterloo Warriors @ Carleton Ravens
The No. 2 nationally ranked Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team made it three wins in a row Friday night as they beat the University of Waterloo Warriors 69-51 at the Ravens’ Nest.
Carleton owned the first quarter, outscoring Waterloo 21-12. The Warriors looked sluggish as they struggled making an impact against the defensively focused Ravens team.
But after enjoying a dominant spell in the opening quarter, the second was a harsh slice of reality as the Warriors found their feet in front of a boisterous crowd at the Ravens’ Nest.
Carleton struggled to find the net as Waterloo limited the Ravens to only eight points in the quarter. While Carleton struggled, Waterloo capitalized on defensive mistakes to end the half only five points behind, trailing 29-24.
But Carleton came out of halftime looking like the team that dominated the play in the first quarter.
Krista Van Slingerland (Waterloo, Ont.) and Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) sunk shots from outside the paint to help the Ravens re-establish a firm lead in the game.
The Warriors looked to contain the Ravens in their own end only to have Alyson Bush (Ottawa) seize on defensive rebounds and lead charges up the court to disrupt their pressure.
Waterloo’s defence seemed to panic at the Ravens’ pressure, allowing Carleton to go from no chances at the line to a surprising 12 chances in the third quarter alone.
The Ravens refused to turn off the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, once again sinking 20 points. Despite a mid-quarter surge from Waterloo, Carleton was able to ride out the pressure and seal the win, improving its record to 5-2.
MacLeod tied for a game-high 15 points with Warrior Marti Kuntze (Oakville, Ont.) as Carleton dominated on the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds to Waterloo’s 27.

Laurier Golden Hawks @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
Despite a shaky start, the Gee-Gees found their footing and continued to build momentum throughout the game in a final 65-53 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Laurier was lighting up the floor in the first half with their three-point shooting, going five for six from behind the arc. The Gee-Gees struggled to contain the Golden Hawks defensively, as Laurier jumped to a 13 point lead midway through the second quarter and were up by seven at half.
It took only five minutes into the second half for the Gee-Gees to restore order on the court and regain the lead. The Gee-Gees would outscore the Golden Hawks by ten in the third frame to jump to a three point lead. And as for the fourth, the progression continued for the Gee-Gees as they came together to dominate the floor and hold the Hawks to only seven points.
Rookie Ariane Lachance-Scantland (Gatineau, Qué.) contributed two key back to back threes upon her stepping onto the court late in the third. CIS leading rebounder fifth-year Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) finished with 11 rebounds, just slightly below her previous average of 12.5 rebounds per game.
CIS athlete of the week fifth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) continued her high offensive production, leading the Gee-Gees in scoring at 19 points and 11 rebounds. Second-year guard Tatiana Hanlan (Gatineau, Qué.) had a season high 13 points on the win and rookie point guard Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) really came out strong in the second half to finish with 12 points.
“It’s all about my team getting me the ball in the right situation to score,” said Sunley-Paisley on her scoring success, noting the wider spread of scoring potential this year opening things up on the floor, “With Bess [Lennox] and Jenna [Gilbert] especially, there’s more focus on other players. And today, when Tatiana [Hanlan] was hitting her shots and with Kellie [Ring] attacking, it really opens up everything; it gets the shooters open and it gets me open. It’s always a team effort.”
Head coach Andy Sparks was very unimpressed with his team’s effort tonight on the court, “We really only played 22 minutes of basketball today; the work ethic’s got to be better,” said Sparks, “We’ve got senior leadership and they need to lead. It’s just not where we need to be; we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
“That first half was them wanting it more than we wanted it,” continued a frustrated Sparks, “And we have to understand that everybody’s ready to give us their best shot; everybody knows we have a talented group of girls. And when we respond like that, that’s going to bite us for sure. You can’t rely on those kinds of comebacks.”

Toronto Varsity Blues @ McMaster Marauders
Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's basketball team took down the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night at Burridge Gymnasium. In the 81-72 win, Hailey Milligan (Brantford, Ont.) was named McMaster's Player of the Game for her 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Early in the first the Marauders would come storming out with a 14-2 lead forcing the Blues to call an early timeout. Toronto wouldn't score again until the scoreboard read 18-2 for the Marauders. At the buzzer at the end of hte first, Milligan would sink a shot from the top of the key to give McMaster the 12 points lead at 23-11 going into the second quarter.
Things continued to get even better for the Marauders as Samantha Hunt (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) would score a basket at the seven minute mark in the second to extend the lead to 19. Throughout the quarter, the Marauders would maintain their large lead. The half would end with a score of 41-26 in favour of the home team. Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.) would lead the pack with 14 points thus far.
Despite the half court press the Blues used thoughout the game, it would be no problem for McMaster as Toronto continued to struggle on offence. Through the third, the Marauders would uphold hte double-digit lead. With four minutes left in the quarter, Toronto would get within 11 but a three-pointer from Vanessa Bonomo (Dundas, Ont.) would halt Toronto's momentum. At the end of the third, Chiarot would have 21 points on the board and Milligan would have another 12.
McMaster was still up by 15 half way through the fourth as the Blues had trouble breaking the double-digit point barrier all game. Jill Stratton for Toronto would lead the way in hopes of a comeback for the Blues as she grabbed her own rebound, sunk the shot and on the next possession would draw a foul. Up by just ten, the Marauders couldn't find a way to settle Stratton and she would pull her team within seven with two minutes to go in the game. That's as close as the Blues would get as the Marauders finished out the game on top with a score of 81-72.
Stratton was the game-high scorer with 25 points on the night and was also named Toronto's Player of the Game.
For the Marauders Chiarot and Milligan both earned the double-double on the night. Chiarot, the fifth-year captain, recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds. Milligan added another 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Marauders and Jaklynn Nimec (Binbrook, Ont.) would earn another 10 points on the night.

RMC Paladins @ Western Mustangs
Tired legs were clearly not a factor for the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon, as they took to the hardwood for the second time in less than 24 hours and turned in a resounding 95-47 victory over the outmatched Royal Military College at Alumni Hall. Western was led by Lacey Knox, who dropped in 25 points, five of them coming from beyond the arc.

Laurentian outscored Lakehead 13-12 in each of the final quarters, but could not push themselves over the hump, as Jon Kreiner's team used ball movement against the Vees' 2-3 zone, and got some outside shooting prowess from Carolyn Fragale (6-13 from three), who finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds.
Lindsay Druery was her usual double-double self, notching 12 points and 12 boards along with 3 steals. Sierra guy was also big on the boards, grabbing 8 (2 offensive) and got help from Lacey McNulty with 6 rebounds. As a team the Pack out-rebounded the Vees 43-25.

Jon Kreiner's team is now tied for 4th place with Guelph and McMaster in the OUA West. Post game Kreiner remarked: "We got a much needed win to keep pace in a crazy and wild OUA season. Any team has the ability to win on any night and although we struggled again with turnovers we did enough early to seal the victory. "It was nice to see Shelby break out as she has had some tough luck lately," said Falco. "She has continued to improve her defence and rebounding and she gave us an offensive boost that helped us gap Carleton tonight."

“It’s always a great opportunity, if you get a chance to go in there; it’s your chance to prove yourself,” said Ring on the opportunity her fellow rookies had with their playing minutes tonight. Ring reflected an improved effort level from the team tonight, but reiterated, “It has to be our main goal, to play the full game, non-stop, 110% all the time. We have to play our game every day and then we can be successful.”
“Bess [Lennox] has been consistent and pretty key for us, averaging 12 rebounds a game. Kellie [Ring] is starting to show what she can do,” commented Sparks on the talent of his starting five, also including Sunley-Paisley, Gilbert and fifth-year Teddi Firmi (Kitchener, Ont.), “Having those kinds of weapons, it’s pretty good to have a number of players like that who can all step up on different occasions.”
“I think we got some good games coming up at Christmas in the UQAM tournament,” said Sparks looking towards the next half of the season, “We’re just going to keep working to get better and see where it ends up.”
