W-BASKETBALL EXHIBITION HOLIDAY ROUNDUP
Carleton Ravens – Reebok Invitational:
With the win, Carleton finished the eight-team tournament, hosted by Concordia University, with a 2-1 record.
The Ravens grabbed the lead right from the start and the Sea-Hawks were unable to pull ahead at any point in the game. Carleton led by 14 at half, up 35-21. The Ravens continued to build on their lead in the second half en route to the 30-point victory.
Jessica Resch (Ottawa) scored a game-high 17 points for the Ravens, followed closely by Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) with 14. Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) and Alyson Bush (Ottawa) both collected 13 points for Carleton.
Aly Forsey (St. John’s) was Memorial’s top scorer with 12 points.
The Ravens out-rebounded the Sea-Hawks 44-24.
Laurentian Lady Vees – Daemen Holiday Classic:
AMHERST, NY - The Lady Vees basketball team was south of the border this week, taking on a pair of NAIA teams at the Daemen Holiday Classic. The team returned north after dropping both games at the Classic.
On Wednesday, Dec. 21st, against Roberts Wesleyan College, the Lady Vees hung tough for the first half, heading into the break trailing by 10. The Raiders of Roberts Wesleyan maintained the pressure in the second half, walking away with a 77-60 victory over the Lady Vees. The game was essentially decided inside the key as the Raiders outscored the Lady Vees 36-16 in the paint. Erin Simpson led all scorers with 20 points, going 6-12 from 3 point range.
The next day, Dec. 22nd, the Lady Vees took on the host Daemen College Wildcats. Despite the change of opponent the outcome was much the same as the day before. Despite strong games from Amanda McDonald (15 pts) and Emma Decloe (12 pts, 9 rbs), the Lady Vees fell 75-53.
While disappointed with the losses, head coach Mike Clarke said the trip was "positive as a whole. We got a chance to play some real good competition and experiment with different line-ups. Now the girls get to go home for the Christmas break and we will get back to work in the New Year to prepare for the OUA East schedule."
The Lady Vees hit the court next on January 6th as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Ben Avery. Tip-off is set for 6pm.

McMaster Marauders – UQAM Tournament:
The McMaster women's basketball team fell 73-69 in their opening game of the UQAM tournament Wednesday afternoon to the Laval Rouge et Or. Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Marauders with 19 points and six rebounds.
Three other Marauders also scored in double figures. Hailey Milligan (Brampton, Ont.) scored 15 points with nine rebounds. Liz Burns (Hamilton, Ont.) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Isabel Ormond (Hamilton, Ont.) rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and six rebounds.
Laval was led by Elyse Jobin's game high 26 points.
The following day, the Marauders earned the win over the tournament hosts, UQAM. The 70-55 win for McMaster was lead by Burns with 18 points and five rebounds. Joining Burns with double digit numbers was also Jaklynn Nimec (Binbrook, Ont.) who scored another 12 for the Marauders.
UQAM's high-scorer was Valerie Gauvin with 12 points.
In McMaster's last exhibition game over the break, they were matched up with Acadia. Despite fighting hard all game long, the Marauders lost by just eight points to the Axemen with a 79-71 score. Three Marauders scored a game-high 17 points including Burns who added another seven rebounds, Milligan who grabbed eight rebounds and Chiarot. Point guard Vanessa Bonomo (Dundas, Ont.) also hit double-digits scoring 12.
The Marauders are back in action Wednesday night in Windsor to take on the Lancers at 6:00 p.m.
The women’s basketball team completed an undefeated run through their competition at the Citadins Classic at UQAM by defeating the hosts 76-52 Friday night. The Gee-Gees are now 12-4 overall against CIS competition this season and have won their last nine games.
Ottawa won each of the quarters against the Citadins, steadily building their lead with contributions from all players. The bench tallied 30 points, led by Tatiana Hanlan’s 10 points on 4-9 shooting. Sarah Nolette (Edmonton, Alb.) also had a good shooting night, dropping 3-4 from three-point range. The Gee-Gees shot 44 per cent from the field as a team.
In addition to their victory over UQAM, the Gee-Gees also recorded a 53-45 win over Laval and an 86-58 win against CIS eighth-ranked Acadia. The OUA regular season resumes for the ninth-ranked Gee-Gees on Friday January 6, when they will travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-6 OUA).

Ryerson Rams – Windsor Holiday Classic:
DECEMBER 28 - Ryerson 48 v. Fraser Valley 65
The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team dropped its opening game at the University of Windsor's Holiday Tournament, falling 65-48 to the Fraser Valley Cascades on Wednesday afternoon. Ashley MacDonald had a game-high 16 points for Ryerson, who as team shot just 26.7 percent from the field in the first game in almost a month. Angela Tilk added 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Rams. Tessa Klassen recorded a team-high 13 points for the Cascades, who led 26-16 at the break.
DECEMBER 29 - Ryerson 61 v. Windsor 75
In the second game of the Lancer Holiday Classic, the Rams fell 75-61 to the No. 2 Windsor Lancers. Windsor opened the game on a 9-0 run, but the Rams would close the gap to 21-15 at the end of the first quarter. Ryerson shot the ball effectively in the first half going 13-for-29 compared to Windsor's 9-for-27. With the Rams trailing 35-32 at half, Windsor would open the second half with four three-pointers to increase the lead that they would not relinquish. Ryerson was led by Angela Tilk's double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds from while the Lancers received 18 points and 10 rebounds from Miah Langlois. Ashley MacDonald added 18 points for the Rams.
DECEMBER 30 - Ryerson 63 v. Bishop's 70
The Rams closed out the University of Windsor's Holiday Tournament with a narrow 70-63 loss to the Bishop's Gaiters. The game was a very close affair with seven lead changes and the score was tied on eight occasions. With the game tied at 61 late in the fourth quarter, Bishop's ended the game on a 9-2 run to win by 7. Bishop's shot 20-for-23 from the foul line and made several free throws down the stretch. Angela Tilk recorded her second straight double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams. Kelsey Wright added 11 points and five rebounds. Bishop's was led by Jessy Roy who had 16 points and five assists.
Toronto Varsity Blues – Calgary Holiday Hoops Tournament:
Game 3:
Toronto's Joanna Medri shot 50% from the floor, including 3-6 from beyond the arc to lead the Varsity Blues to a one-point victory, 68-67, over the University of Victoria Vikes in their final game of the University of Calgary's Ranger Inspection Holiday Hoops tournament on Friday afternoon in the Jack Simpson Gym.
Medri's 20 points led all players; she also had six rebounds and three steals. Jill Stratton knocked down 13 points, had five assists and hauled in six boards of her own. The Blues bench was another contributing factor in this win, outscoring the Vikes' reserves 22-11 in the tournament finale.
Toronto was 2-1 over the three-day event, losing the opening game 73-65 to the hosts, and eventual champions, Calgary Dinos before winning two straight over their OUA counterpart RMC Paladins and U of Vic.
Game 2:
Five players hit double digits as the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team handily defeated the RMC Paladins 93-35 on Day 2 of the 2011 Ranger Inspection Holiday Hoops tournament at Jack Simpson Gym.
The Blues controlled the game from the start and held a dominant 47-23 advantage at halftime. With all 13 players seeing action, U of T held RMC to single digits in the third and fourth quarters to come away with the lopsided victory.
Second-year forward Julie Longauer of Whitby, Ont., led all players with 15 points, while Rachel Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) had 10 and Etobicoke, Ont., native Jill Stratton tallied 11. Both Liane Bailey and Kristy Chute notched 10 points in the win.
The Blues wrap up the three-day tournament versus the Victoria Vikes tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST.
Game 1:
The No. 10 Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 73-65 to the Calgary Dinos on Day 1 of the 2011 Ranger Inspection Holiday Hoops tournament at Jack Simpson Gym.
Sophomore guard Jill Stratton of Etobicoke, Ont., tallied a team-high 16 points, while veteran guards Sherri Pierce (Brampton, Ont.) and Joanna Medri (Toronto) had nine and 10 points, respectively.
Calgary was led by Alex Cole's game-high 23-point performance on the day.
Windsor Lancers – Windsor Holiday Classic:
The No. 2 ranked Windsor Lancers captured their fourth Holiday Classic tournament title in as many years last week at the St. Denis Centre.
The Lancers welcomed the Bishop Gaiters, Ryerson Rams and Fraser Valley Cascades to Windsor for the three day tournament.
In the teams' first game of the Lancer Holiday Classic, the Lancers defeated the Gaiters 71-40. The Lancers controlled the game after the Gaiters took a four point lead midway through the first quarter. Windsor lead the rest of the way using a strong inside attack and great rebounding.
They outscored Bishop's 36-16 in the paint and outrebounded the Gaiters 65-42. The Lancers were led by Jessica Clemencon, with the game’s only double-double, with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Miah Langlois chipped in 14 points.
The Gaiters were led by Jessy Roy with 14 points and Eloisa Katz with 10 rebounds.
In the teams' second game, Windsor hung on to defeat the Ryerson Rams 75-61. The Lancers opened the game on a 9-0 run, but the Rams would close the gap to 21-15 at the first quarter break.
Ryerson shot the ball effectively in the first half going 13-29 compared to Windsor's 9-27 stat line.
With the Lancers up 35-32 at half, they opened the second half with four threes from Emily Abbott and Bojana Kovacevic to open up a big lead that they would not relinquish.
Ryerson was lead by 24 points and 11 rebounds from Angela Tilk while the Lancers received 18 points and 10 rebounds from Langlois.
In their final game of the tournament, the Lancers faced Fraser Valley and came away with a 78-59 victory in a well played contest.
Rebounding was the story of the game with Windsor winning that battle 51-36, including 24 offensive rebounds for the Lancers. Windsor also had 25 second chance points compared to 8 for the Cascades.
The Lancers lead by 13 points at the half and used a strong third quarter performance to create a large lead.
The Cascades battled all game with Tessa Klassen and Sarah Wierks leading the way with 13 points for Klassen and 10 points and 7 rebounds for Wierks. Jessica Clemencon (17 pts, 7 rebs) and Miah Langlois (14 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts) lead 5 Lancers in double digits.
The Lancers will now start divisional play this Wednesday when they host the McMaster Marauders at 6:00pm at the St. Denis Centre.
