W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Queen's Moore moves into fifth on all-time scoring list
Carleton Ravens @ York Lions
The Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team started the New Year off with a win, soaring to a 62-51 win over the York University Lions on the road Friday night.
Llyandra Kerrr (Markham, Ont.), who had four points in the first, grabbed the lead for the Lions in the second before Alyson Bush (Ottawa) responded nearly immediately.
The Ravens were forced to respond to the Lions’ baskets until the final two minutes before the half. Kendall MacLeod (Brockville, Ont.) gave the Ravens a one-point lead before Bush added to it. Carleton went into the break up 29-24.
With the momentum swinging in the Ravens favour, they looked to start the second half as strong as they finished the first. But the Lions, ranked fifth in the OUA East, refused to be pushed over. York took the lead only three minutes in before the Ravens regained it and wouldn’t lose it for the rest of the game.
York tried to make a late fourth quarter comeback, but fell short as Carleton went on to earn the 11-point victory.
Bush was one of three Ravens to finish in double digits, scoring a game-high 17 points. The Ravens out-rebounded the Lions 33-30.

The Gee-Gees move to 7-2 in the regular season after defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 67-32 on Friday night in Sudbury. Coach Sparks balanced the players’ minutes throughout the game, which should help to increase the depth of the team going later into the season.
“We didn’t get the start that we wanted. We struggled to recognize their defense and didn’t get good shots. Once we settled down and found the open man, we were much better," explained Sparks.
The Gee-Gee defensive pressure continued in third quarter, using double teams at half court and below the rim to create numerous turnovers and severely limit the Voyageurs control. Kellie Ring was able to spark the offense by taking advantage of opportunities to drive one-on-one from the top of the key. Ottawa shot a much higher percentage in the second half (51.7 per cent compared to 32.4 per cent in the first half), allowing them to build their lead.
Maddie Stephen (Toronto, Ont.) made the most of her floor time – she was an active presence on defense and collected 8 points and 10 rebounds. Coach Sparks was quick with the praise for his second line after the game. “They’re very talented players and we needed to get them some court time. Kudos to them tonight, it’s huge to be able to rely on them stepping in for the rest of the season.”
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 6, 2012) - Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. and the Queen's Gaels (5-4) kicked off 2012 with a victory over the Ryerson Rams (3-5) on Friday night in the ARC. The final score of the game was 74-58.
The Gaels steadily increased their lead with consistent play over the course of four quarters to build up their game winning 16 point lead. The Gaels best quarter defensively was the third when they held Ryerson to just nine points while countering with 15 points of their own.
Brittany Moore led all scorers, scoring 13 of her 20 points in the second half. She also added four rebounds and three assists to round out her stat line. Jenny Wright of Kingston, Ont. added 12 points, and was the Gaels' leading rebounder, pulling in eight boards. For her efforts she was named player of the game in front of the home crowd.
Both squads picked up 31 rebounds, with 17 of the Gaels rebounds coming on the offensive boards. The Gaels moved the ball well, recording 10 more assists than the Rams on the night and were also more efficient with only 13 turnovers to the Rams 16.
With her 20 points, Moore has now moved into a tie for fifth all-time in the OUA for points in a career. Her next basket will move her into sole possession of fifth on the leaderboard.
The No. 10 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team came away with a dominant 76-40 victory over the RMC Paladins on Friday, January 6 in Kingston, Ont.
Second-year forward and Montreal native Liane Bailey led the Blues with 11 points, while Jill Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Kristy Chute (Amherstburg, Ont.) had 10 apiece on the night. Nine other players saw action and contributed in the win.
Toronto got off to a great start, outscoring the home Paladins 21-5 in the first quarter and building a 47-17 win heading into halftime. The Paladins held close in the second half, with the Blues holding a 29-23 advantage to come away with the 36-point win.
“We had a great first half, defending hard and staying focused,” said Michele Belanger, now in her 33rd season as Blues bench boss. “We had great minutes from everyone tonight. Our first- and second-year players worked hard and hustled. It was a nice team effort for the win.”
The win lifts Toronto to 6-3 and leaves them tied with Carleton for second place in the OUA East division.
Sandy Edmison led the Paladins with 11 points in the losing cause.

The women's basketball team kicked off 2012 with a home win over the Western Mustangs, 74-58 on Friday evening.
In the first half the 'Wolves were flowing well in their offensive sets, with Lindsay Druery and Carolyn Fragale scoring 8 apiece in the first 20 minutes. After missing her first three shots, Kelsey Barsdley struck twice in a row from long range, one being a pull-up three on a fast break that caught nothing but net (Bardsley finished 3-of-6 from behind the arc).
Towards the end of the first half, Western coach Brian Cheung had benched most of his starters and had 4 rookies and a sophomore out on the floor.
The second half didn't turn out much better for the visitors, as Lakehead remained in control with a comfortable 15-point cushion they would not relinquish.
Lindsay Druery was Lakehead's top scorer with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Carolyn Fragale was top rebounder with 9 to go with 14 points (6-of-11 shooting) and 5 assists. Lacey McNulty went 5-of-8 from the floor for 10 points to go with 6 boards and 2 steals. Ten Thunderwolves would make it onto the score sheet.
Western's Jenny Vaughan topped the Mustangs roster with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Rookie Jory McDonald had 15 to go with 7 rebounds and a blocked shot, while Katelyn Leddy, who started off hot, got into foul trouble and finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds in 18 minutes.
Coach Jon Kreiner: "This was a great team win to start 2012. Twenty-five total assists shows just how well we moved the ball. Ashley Randall came off the bench and gave us some hugh minutes at the forward position and Kelsey Bardsley hit some key shots. Overall our bench scoring was great tonight and we played decent perimeter defense. We will need to improve our post defense and not foul as much tomorrow and we must come out strong right from the get go."

WATERLOO, Ont. (January, 7, 2012) - Continuing a strong start to the 2012 half of the season, the Wilfrid Laurier women's basketball team won their second straight game over the No.6 ranked Brock Badgers 77-69. Rookie Shelby Kurt of Waterloo, Ont., led the Hawks with 19 points coming off the bench.

Hamilton, Ont. - In McMaster's first home game of the second half of the regular season, the Marauders took down the visiting Waterloo Warriors 79-51. The game's high scorer was rookie Abby Hurd of the Marauders with 18 points. She was also named the Big Mac Player of the Game.
Halfway through the first, the Marauders took an early lead of 9-5 and never looked back, capitalizing on sloppy play on either end of the court. Big defensive plays in McMaster's end kept Waterloo's scoring to a minimal as the Marauders would go up 15-7 before the Warriors would score another basket. The score would end at the half 20-11 in favour of the home side.
In the second, the Marauders took their first double-digit lead of the game at 7:30. Taylor Chiarot would have a game-high six at that time including a three pointer earlier in the quarter. Later in the second around the five minute mark, rookie Hurd would drain a three of her own to help the Marauders go up by 13 with a score of 27-14. Waterloo quickly responded with a three of their own at the shot clock buzzer.
The closest the Warriors would get would be within 11 as McMaster continued to build up their lead. Chiarot would hit ten points with two foul shots with a minute and a half to go and Hurd would sink another three just before the halftime buzzer to make the score 39-26.
In the third, the Marauders couldn't be stopped as a number of McMaster players got on the board with shots, lay-ups and free throws. Hailey Milligan would force the and-one at 4:00 to push the lead to 22 points at 56-34. The third quarter would end 58-38 for the Marauders. Three players for the home team had already hit double-digit numbers including Chiarot, Milligan and Liz Burns.
In the fourth it was smooth sailing for the Marauders as they closed out the win with a score of 79-51. McMaster now restores their .500 record from before the break at 5-5 on the season.
Hurd led the Marauders with 18 points. Milligan recorded the double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Chiarot ended the game with 13 points for the Marauders and teammate Burns added another 12.

Just one night after crushing the Laurentian Voyageurs 67-32 in Sudbury, Ontario, the Gee-Gees women’s basketball team made the long road trip down to the provincial capital, to take on the York Lions. Despite their tired legs, uOttawa earned its second straight blowout victory with a 66-40 win over York. Ottawa is currently on an eight-game winning streak.
Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the opening minutes, which led to a low-scoring first quarter of play. Ottawa took an early 14-9 advantage after 10 minutes, due to the Gee-Gees’ better play in the paint. Fifth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) had seven points to lead all scorers in the first quarter. She finished with 22 points on the night, to lead all players, and also contributed with 11 rebounds.
The sloppy play of the two teams continued into the second quarter, as both teams traded turnovers to start the frame. However, uOttawa’s offence finally woke up midway through the second quarter as back-to-back three pointers by rookie point guard Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) and second-year guard Sarah Nolette (Edmonton, Alb.) pushed the Gee-Gees’ lead to 17 points. Ottawa also stepped up its intensity on the defensive end and finished the half on a 20-2 run.
“We played well on the defensive end of the floor, just giving up 11 points in the first half. They didn’t really get many good opportunities, and it was caused by good, solid team defence. It was an overall good team result for us,” said Sparks.
After the intermission, uOttawa caught fire from beyond the arc, as the Gee-Gees drilled three straight three pointers to begin the third quarter. Fourth-year centre Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, ON) was responsible for two of the three shots from downtown. And though the Lions eventually improved offensively, the Gee-Gees’ balanced scoring attack was too much for York to overcome. uOttawa led 53-25 at the end of three quarters.
York made a spirited 9-0 run early in the final frame to make the score somewhat respectable. Fortunately for Gee-Gees fans, Sunley-Paisley scored a crucial basket to stop the run and uOttawa cruised to the easy 66-40 victory.
The nationally ninth-ranked Gee-Gees will face two more Toronto-based teams on the road, January 13 to 14, when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Ryerson Rams.
KINGSTON, Ont.- Welland, Ont. product Angela Tilk continued her hot play in the New Year on Saturday night, picking up a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds to lift the Ryerson Rams women's basketball team to a 67-54 victory over the RMC Paladins.

The Rams (4-6) move into a tie for fifth-place with the York Lions, and are just one win behind Queen's (5-5) in fourth. The women return home next weekend, where they will welcome the Carleton Ravens (7-3) and Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-2) on Friday and Saturday respectively.
The Ravens are tied with Toronto (7-3) for second place, while the Gee-Gees hold the division lead after this weekend's matches.

Down 54-52, second-year guard Jill Stratton opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to spark a 19-3 run that would secure Toronto’s seventh win of the season.
"Great defensive focus by the team in the fourth," commented Varsity Blues head coach Michele Belanger. "We did all the little things well. We defended their scorers extremely well and it paid off."
A native of Etobicoke, Ont., Stratton tallied a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Fifth-year guard Sherri Pierce (Brampton, Ont.) had 15 points, four assists and three steals, while both Megan Stoncius and Rachel Sider had 10 points and seven boards on the night. Toronto native Joanna Medri added 10 points, four assists and three steals in the win.
Sider opened the first quarter with a three and the play went back-and-forth from there. Stratton nailed her first three of the game with two seconds remaining in the frame to give Toronto a 14-12 lead.
The Gaels started the second quarter with a 10-0 run, thanks in large part to Jenny Wright, only to be answered by six consecutive Varsity Blues points. Queen’s ran into foul trouble as Toronto sank seven consecutive free throws in the last 1:07 of the second to even the score at 31-31 heading into the locker room.
Sider drained another three to open the second half but the Gaels responded with their second 10-0 run of the game. Toronto answered back with an 8-0 streak of their own and headed into the fourth quarter down two points (54-52).
The Gaels were led by Brittany Moore’s 14-point performance, with Wright and Liz Boag adding 11 in the loss.

The women's basketball team came away with a weekend sweep of the Western Mustangs, winning 64-63 on Saturday evening thanks to some last second heroics courtesy of Lacey McNulty and Lindsay Druery.
Lakehead had four players score in double figures, with Lacey McNulty leading the pack with a huge 12 point and 16 rebound outing to go with 2 steals. Lindsay Druery had a game-high 19 points, while Ayse Kalkan and Carolyn Fragale had 11 each.
Despite lodging a protest with officials about the time keeping, Western coach Brian Cheung was denied any quarter from the referees. Upon later review of the game tape (after the game), it was clear that no 'homer' time keeping was to blame for the miraculous finish, only a lucky bounce and the tenacity of McNulty and Druery to fight to the very end.
Jon Kreiner on the win: "It was a thrilling finish to a game that had many lead changes and where both teams worked very hard. Tonight we struggled to get to the free throw line and when we did we struggled to convert but our second effort plays were the difference in the game. I thought our team effort on the glass was awesome tonight and after a poor start to the game Lacey came in when it was 35-30 Western and changed our team's momentum. She was really noticeable in the 4th quarter and her 16 rebounds were huge for us especially on the last play of the game where she tipped the ball off a missed FT to Druery for the game winning bucket. Sierra Guy and Ayse Kalkan played big tonight with 10 and 8 rebounds respectively (Sierra with 6 Offensive) and on a night where we didn't shoot it that well we got many 2nd chances to score."
