Lancers to meet Gee-Gees in OUA Gold medal game
For the third time in four years, the Windsor Lancers will be meeting the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the OUA Gold medal game, after Windsor defeated the Carleton Ravens 76-56 Friday evening in the second semi-final match-up of the OUA Final Four weekend.
Third-year forward and OUA West Player of the Year Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, FR) was yet again a dominant force for the Lancers in their win, picking up a game-high 32 points and 10 rebounds. She was named OUA Player of the Game. Carleton’s fourth-year guard Alyson Bush (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Ravens with 20 points and three rebounds.
The first quarter saw a fairly even match-up between both teams. Second-year guard Krista Van Slingerland (Waterloo, Ont.) nailed a three and fifth-year forward Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) hit a jumper to put Carleton ahead at the first quarter break.
The Ravens held the lead for the first half of the second quarter, but the Lancers soon responded with a strong offensive push to which the Ravens had no answer. The Lancers went on to outscore the Ravens 28-13 while recording an impressive 76.5 field goal percentage, to take a 42-30 lead. The shooting skill was not uncharacteristic for the Lancers, who were the second best shooting team in the country in the regular season (44.4 per cent).
The Lancers’ strong offensive play continued in the second half, scoring 16 and 18 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively, while limiting the Ravens to 13 points in both quarters. Despite a late fourth quarter nine point run for the Ravens, it would not be enough as the Windsor would go on to take the win, 76-56.
The Lancers will now face the Gee-Gees tomorrow evening in the OUA gold medal game at 8 p.m., while the Carleton Ravens will face the Brock Badgers at 6 p.m. in the bronze medal game. Both games will be held at Montpetit Hall.
Both of Saturday’s games will be broadcast live on SSN Canada. They will also be broadcasted on tape delay on Rogers Cable 22 in Ottawa area. Gold medal match will be shown at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night, replays on Sunday at 9 p.m. of both matches, starting with the gold medal match.
