YORK CLAIMS LAST PLAYOFF BERTH
#1 Laurier, who had their first perfect season since 1966, and the four-time defending Yates Cup champions McMaster, who finished second, receive a week off and first round byes in the new OUA football playoff format.
#3 Western Mustangs will host the #6 York Lions Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the Score. The winner advances to play McMaster. In the remaining quarter-final, #4 Ottawa Gee-Gees host the #5 Guelph Gryphons, with the winner moving on to take on the undefeated Golden Hawks.
McMaster 59, Ottawa 1
At Ottawa, Jesse Lumsden scored four times to establish a CIS single season record with 21 touchdowns as the sixth-ranked McMaster Marauders clinched second place in the OUA with a 59-1 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Lumsden set the new CIS mark with his 21st major of the campaign on a six-yard run 3:40 into the third quarter. The Burlington, Ont. native had reached the end zone on 20 occasions in 2003 to tie the record set in 2000 by former teammate Kojo Aidoo.
Lumsden carried the ball 22 times for 136 yards this afternoon to finish the season with 1816, also a CIS mark.
The Marauders, who built a 35-0 advantage by halftime, held Ottawa to 178 yards of net offence, forcing four fumbles and two interceptions.
McMaster (7-1) enjoys a first round bye next weekend as the OUA playoffs get under way. Ottawa (5-3), who dropped three of its last four outings after starting the season 4-0, finishes fourth in the conference and hosts Guelph (4-4) on Saturday.
Wilfrid Laurier 38, York 19
At Toronto, the second-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks completed their first perfect regular season since 1966 defeating the York Lions 38-19.
The Golden Hawks, 8-0 this Fall, went 7-0 in the Ontario Intercollegiate Football Conference in 1966, when the University was known as Waterloo Lutheran. They went on to compete in the second annual Canadian College Bowl, falling 40-14 to StFX.
Ryan Pyear threw two touchdown passes on the afternoon to finish the season with 21, tied for fourth best on the OUA all-time list. Pyear was 15-of-30 for 185 yards and one interception.
York's Andre Durie led all rushers in the game with 129 yards on 27 carries to end the season with 1367 yards on the ground, seventh best on the CIS all-time list and third on the OUA list. Durie also scored his 15th and 16th touchdowns of the campaign.
On a day when the offence was slow to get started, the defence stepped up for Laurier intercepting York quarterback Bart Zemanek five times. The Hawks took a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter when Jesse Alexander, from 34 yards out, and Yannick Carter, on 96 yards, both returned picks all the way to the end zone.
York came back to 24-19 five minutes into the fourth quarter on Durie's second major of the contest, on a three-yard run, but Laurier put the game out of reach with back-to-back majors 1:36 appart from Nick Cameron and Andrew Baechler.
Laurier (8-0) enjoys a first-round bye next week as the OUA playoffs get under way. York's (3-5) faith will be decided tonight (Saturday) when Waterloo plays Windsor. A win by Waterloo would eliminate the Lions from the playoffs.
Western Ontario 49, Queen's 24
At Kingston, Ont. Randy McAuley scored three touchdowns as the ninth-ranked Western Ontario Mustangs clinched third place in the OUA with a 49-24 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels, in front of 10,818 homecoming fans at Richardson Stadium.
The game was tied 17-17 at halftime, before the Mustangs scored 29 unanswered points in the third quarter to seal the victory.
Used both as a running back and receiver, McAuley rushed for 87 yards and two majors on seven carries, and added 36 yards and one touchdown on three receptions.
Veteran quarterback Chris Hessel was 21-of-30 for 310 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His favourite target was Andy Fantuz, who finished with six catches for 98 yards.
Receiver Iain Fleming was stellar for Queen's in the losing effort grabbing eight balls for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
Western (6-2) will host either York or Waterloo next Saturday in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Queen's (2-6) was already eliminated from post-season play.
Guelph 38, Toronto 3
At Guelph, Ont. Chris McIntyre rushed for 270 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Gryphons to a 38-3 victory over winless Toronto.
Guelph, who claims fifth place in the OUA, desperately needed momentum going into the playoffs after losing its last four outings. Toronto's losing streak has now reached 25 games.
The Gryphons wasted little time building a 14-0 lead on their first two possessions. After McIntyre opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown rush, the Blues turned the ball over and Shane Bryans made them pay with 29-yard reception in the end zone.
Toronto starting quarterback Mark Stinson was 12-for-23 for 154 yards, but was intercepted four times.
Guelph (4-4) heads to Ottawa on Saturday to open the OUA playoffs against the Gee-Gees (5-3).
