LUMSDEN TAKES MVP AS OUA HANDS OUT MAJOR FOOTBALL AWARDS

Hamilton - Fourth-year running back Jesse Lumsden from the McMaster University Marauders took home the Most Valuable Player award as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) handed out the football major awards for the conference. As a result, the record breaking running back is the OUA's nominee for the Hec Crighton award for the most outstanding player in Canada. Lumsden's teammate Jason Pottinger was also honoured; receiving the President's Trophy for OUA Standup Defensive Player of the Year award.

From the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, Head Coach Gary Jeffries picked up his second OUA Coach of the Year award in as many years. The second-year head coach led the Hawks to their first perfect season in 38 years. Fifth-year offensive lineman from Laurier, Ryan Jeffrey received the J.P. Metras award for OUA Lineman of the Year. Jeffrey, the Montreal Alouettes top pick in the 2004 CFL draft, has been an integral part in engineering the fourth ranked offense in Canada this season.

Daryl Stephenson, a first-year running back from the University of Windsor Lancers, took home the Norm Marshall Trophy for OUA Rookie of the Year. The London, ON native rushed for a total of 1192 yards, third in the country. The most captivating moment in his rookie year came when he scored a 58-yard touchdown run on his very first CIS carry.

York University Lion Ntare Bainomugisha is the OUA nominee for the CIS Russ Jackson Award, that combines athletics, academics and community involvement. In his fifth and final season, Bainomugisha has been a four-year captain, team leader and outstanding individual with the York Football program. He has not missed a football game in his five-year career. In addition, the academic All-Canadian has the highest GPA of all the student-athletes at York. With his unselfish attitude, he made the switch from defensive line to offensive line due to the numerous injuries at that position. Bainomugisha provides speed and power from the left guard position.

All award recipients move on as the OUA nominees for their respective awards at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level. The All-Canadians Awards Ceremony, where individual national awards will be named, takes place Thursday, November 25 at the Hamilton Convention Center.

    MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
    Jesse Lumsden - McMaster

Jesse Lumsden completely rewrote the record books this season, breaking three national and one OUA record, en route to his OUA MVP season. The fourth-year running back set a CIS single season rushing record with 1,816 yards, the CIS single-season touchdown record (21), the CIS career touchdown record (43) and the OUA career rushing record (4,328). Leading his team to a 7-1-0 record, the Marauders were in the nation's top ten for the entire season. In 8 games Lumsden scored 21 touchdowns setting a new CIS record for the most touchdowns scored in a single season.

Lumsden, who has been scouted by NFL teams, has been named CIS Offensive Football Player of the Week on four separate occasions this year.

    COACH OF THE YEAR
    Gary Jeffries - Laurier

In his second full season as the Laurier Golden Hawks Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach, Gary Jeffries has led the Hawks to their first perfect season (8-0-0) in 38 years. Their undefeated record ranked the Waterloo-based team second overall in Canada.

Despite Laurier's controversial off-season, Jeffries has held together the team, overcoming all obstacles and distractions to lead the Hawks back to a spot in the Yates Cup.

Coaching in his 16th Yates Cups, Jeffries hopes that his second appearance at the championship game as a head coach will be a victorious one.

    NORM MARSHALL TROPHY
    ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
    Daryl Stephenson - Windsor

In just his first season as a Windsor Lancer football player, running back Daryl Stephenson finished third in CIS rushing, behind only two professionally bound veterans. The London, ON native rushed for a total of 1192 yards on only 177 attempts, averaging 6.66 yards per carry. These successful rushing yards contributed to his five touchdowns of the season.

Stephenson's 1192 yards set a Windsor record for the most rushing yards recorded by any freshman. The most captivating moment in his rookie year came when he scored a 58-yard touchdown run on his very first CIS carry. This outstanding athlete has contributed immensely to his team in a short time and will no doubt become one of the top running backs in the nation in years to come.

    PRESIDENT'S TROPHY
STANDUP DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
    Jason Pottinger - McMaster

Jason Pottinger finished the regular season with 31.5 tackles. He had 22 solo tackles, 19 assists, and 1.5 sacks. Pottinger is the Marauders leading tackler and the leagues best defender. The third-year Economics major and his astonishing defensive leadership helped lead McMaster to the least amount of points allowed this season at 119.

Pottinger's excellent coverage skills and ability to play the run and pass defense, has put Pottinger among the nation's defensive leaders. Ranked first in tackles on his team, the first team all-star has a knack for rising to the occasion against tough opponents.

    J.P. METRAS AWARD
    LINEMAN OF THE YEAR
    Ryan Jeffrey - Laurier

Ryan Jeffrey, a three-time OUA all-star, has helped lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to their first perfect season in 38 years. The fifth-year offensive lineman was an integral part in engineering the fourth ranked offense in Canada this season. As the anchor of the Hawks offensive line, Jeffrey has also helped lead the team to becoming one of the top five rushing teams in the nation.

Jeffrey, who was a 2003 All-Canadian, was the top pick by the Montreal Alouettes in the 2004 CFL draft. In addition to these accomplishments, his leadership has also been a great asset to the Laurier Golden Hawks.

    RUSS JACKSON AWARD NOMINEE
    Ntare Bainomugisha - York

In his fifth and final season, Ntare Bainomugisha has been a four-year captain, team leader and outstanding individual with the York Football program. He has started and not missed a football game in his five-year career. An Academic All-Canadian, Bainomugisha has the highest GPA of all the student-athletes at York. With his unselfish attitude, he made the switch from defensive line to offensive line due to the numerous injuries at that position. Bainomugisha provides speed and power from the left guard position.

Bainomugisha serves as a team mentor by assisting teammates with essays and assignments. He has been a three-time Sport York Excellence recipient. He is completing his Masters of Education this year and is applying to do his PhD in education.

Bainomugisha's volunteer work away from the class room and football field is extensive. He gives up a lot of his time to help individuals who are less fortunate than himself. That attitude and commitment makes the graduating Lion an ideal candidate for the Russ Jackson Award.

Saturday, the 97th Yates Cup championship takes place at University Stadium as the Laurier Golden Hawks host the McMaster Marauders in a rematch of last year's title match. Game time is 1 p.m. and can be seen on The Score Television Network.
