OUA Investors Group Champions for Life Spotlight: Greg Muldoon
The success of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) student-athletes does not stop after graduation. They succeed not only on the playing field but also in the classroom as they prepare for life after university. Investors Group Divisional Director Greg Muldoon is one of many examples of OUA’s tradition of excellence.
An Ancaster, Ont. native, Muldoon’s choice of university turned out to be a fairly easy one. His mother worked for McMaster University, and given his desire to stay local and the opportunity there for tuition assistance, McMaster was the perfect fit.
An active youth, Muldoon played a variety of sports before discovering football in grade 11. He was a quick study at receiver and slot back, and walked on to the Marauders football team in 1998. He played a minimal role in his first two seasons with the maroon and grey, before becoming a prominent part of McMaster’s offence during their 2000 and 2001 Yates Cup-winning seasons. Greg Marshall, who was at the helm of the Marauders gridiron during Muldoon’s career, identified Muldoon as one of the most improved athletes he’d come across while coaching. Coach Marshall once said to Muldoon, “I never thought you’d play a down of football.” Muldoon considers that particular sentiment, and what it represents, to be one of his proudest athletic achievements.
Graduating with an honours degree in commerce, Muldoon transitioned into the working world seamlessly and believes that he owes his professional success to being a student-athlete in university.
“The support of my wife and family, along with varsity football are the most influential factors to my success in life. I was only average at football, but the hard work and determination I brought to practice and to the gym were what made me standout.”
Muldoon landed a consultant position at Investors Group in 2003. With help from his network, including IG spotlight champion for life Jon Jurus, Muldoon built up his client portfolio and was promoted to Division Director in 2007. Several years later, Muldoon relocated from the Hamilton downtown office back to his routes in Ancaster. Today he serves as Division Director at the Ancaster divisional office, where he is responsible for both his own portfolio of clients and a team of consultants.
“Football honed my people skills. In football, there are a lot of different personalities; it’s the ultimate team sport,” said Muldoon. “The bonds I made at McMaster are so special, and some of the guys from the team are still my closest friends. The friendships I made and the network I built through football has also benefited me professionally, through new clients and referrals. I strongly encourage everyone to get involved in athletics; it’s the best route to develop important life skills.”
Muldoon resides in Ancaster with his wife Erin, their young daughter Isabelle and the family dog Jayce.
