HAMILTON, Ont. – A weekly look at stats and figures from around Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
16 – The number of saves rookie goaltender Erika Thunder (Buffalo Point, Man.) recorded to earn her first career OUA shutout and keep the No. 2 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks without a loss in regulation time.
33 – The number of kills Joren Zeeman (Cambridge, Ont.) tallied in two weekend matches for the Queen’s men’s volleyball team. Zeeman had 12 kills in a win over Toronto before recording 21 kills – eight more than anyone else – against McMaster.
78 – The number of points scored by the Waterloo Warriors women’s basketball team on Friday to earn them their first victory since the 2009 season, ending a 30 game skid. The 78 points is also the highest offensive output by the Warriors since November of 2008.
43 – The number of points fourth year guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) notched in two weekend wins for the Ottawa Gee-Gees. He led all scorers with 22 points in a win against then-ranked No. 6 Windsor and added 21 more in a win over Western. Ward was named the Pioneer Energy OUA Male Athlete of the Week and CIS Male Athlete of the Week for his performance.
3 – The number of goals Andrew Di Perna (Ottawa) scored in the championship game to help lead the Carleton Ravens men’s water polo team over the three-time defending champion Toronto for the 2011 title.
31 – The number of points Ali Dzikowski (Brantford, Ont.) netted for a career high in a Guelph victory over Ryerson on Friday in women’s hoops action. The third year guard sits fourth in league scoring (69) and points per game (17.2) through four games.
7 – The number of points Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) totaled on three goals and four assists over the weekend for the Western Mustangs in men’s hockey action. His three goals came within a span of 1:43 in the third period on Sunday against Laurier.
159 – The number of yards receiver Brad Fochesato (Windsor, Ont.) raked in for McMaster at the Uteck Bowl last weekend, helping the Marauders advance to the Vanier Cup. His day was highlighted with a 75 yard pass-and-run play for a touchdown. Fochesato was named the OUA and CIS Football Player of the Week on offence.
