WINDSOR TO HOST OUA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Windsor, ON - The University of Windsor Lancers and Sutton Creek Golf and Country Club are gearing up for the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Golf Championship held Monday, October 18 and Tuesday, October 19 in the southwestern tip of the province. The par-72 course will host golfers from all over the province in the two-day championship tournament, sponsored by mikeweir.com.
With their successful season, the defending OUA champion University of Waterloo Warriors look poised to repeat. Capturing three OUA-sanctioned tournaments and finishing in the top three in two others, the Warriors have had an outstanding season. Head Coach Doug Painter, OUA coach of the year last season, commented on his team's success and outlook for next week. "We are as good as anyone, but with the sport of golf and all its variables, you just never know. We would be disappointed though if we were not competitive in Windsor."
The Warriors even added an NCAA tournament to their accomplishments, capturing the St. Lawrence Invitational in Canton, New York over Labour Day. The two-day tournament included a field of 14 Division 2 and 3 schools. Painter noted that the Warriors were able to show the American competition that Canadians "can compete and do other things beside play hockey."
However, the Warriors worst performance came last week at the Western Invitational held at St. Thomas Golf Course, where the Waterloo squad finished sixth.
Second-year standout Jaspreet Walia (Waterloo, ON) has welcomed his younger brother Arjun to the Warrior squad. The older Walia, an OUA all-star last season, has been limited in his playing this season with a commitment to school. He did record a top three finish at the Guelph Invitational early in the season. The rookie Walia captured the Western Invitational held at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club and finished in the top three in another event. The brothers will both be playing in Windsor, along with 2003 all-star Mark Vanderbeek (Kitchener, ON), Chris Vredeveld (Stratford, ON) and the rest of the defending champion Warriors team.
Perhaps the biggest competition for Waterloo are the University Guelph Gryphons and The University of Western Ontario Mustangs, who also have had strong showing in the OUA tournaments. In fact, both teams upset the Warriors at their own invitational, giving the hosts a third place finish. Guelph boasts Mike Kearns (Meaford, ON), last year's Len Shore Trophy winner for individual champion, as well as Mike Nelligan (Oakville, ON) who finished atop of the field at the Gryphon Invitational back in September. The Mustangs have taken two OUA-sanctioned tournaments. With three top three finishes Greg Kennette (Belle River, ON) has been the most consistent golfer for Western. The third-year Engineering student will look to repeat his first place, 2-under par finish he secured earlier this season at Sutton Creek.
In the women's individual event, McMaster University's Katie McIntyre (Barrie, ON) will attempt to hold on to her two-time defending title, though she has gone without a win this season. Western's Lindsey Edmunds (London, ON), the first round leader of last year's championship, has claimed two tournaments in 2003. Gryphon Noni Marler will also pose a threat. The fourth-year student from Tsawwassen, BC has also had a strong season with three top three finishes, including the Windsor Invitational title at Sutton Creek.
For the host Lancers, it will be 10 years since they won their last OUA golf title. The familiarity with the course might give Windsor the edge in upsetting the rest of the field. One thing is for sure; with a 60% chance of rain expected in the forecast and the challenging layout of Sutton Creek, it will not only be a battle between golfers, but a battle against the elements as well.
