MCMASTER SECOND OUA GOLF TITLE IN THREE YEARS
Windsor, ON - For the second time in three years the McMaster University Marauders are the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) golf champions. The 2002 champions shot a combined score of 611, seven strokes ahead of the second place and reigning champion University of Waterloo Warriors, to reclaim the title at Sutton Creek Golf and Country Club in Windsor, Ont. Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks finished third with a score of 620.
Individually, there was a five-way tie for first place after 36 holes. Mike de Courcy (Toronto, ON) from the University of Western Ontario Mustangs birdied the second playoff hole to take the Len Shore Trophy for individual champion. DeCourcy outlasted Mike Matunin (Unionville, ON) from McMaster and Justin Fluit from Waterloo on the 38th hole. First round leader Mike Glenney (Lindsay, ON) from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, and 2003 OUA individual champion, Mike Kearns (Meaford, ON) from the University of Guelph Gryphons were eliminated after bogeying the first playoff hole.
DeCourcy is the first Mustang to take individual honours in 22 years. The last Western golfer to accomplish the feat was Stu Elgie, who captured the Len Shore Trophy title back in 1982.
On the women's side, Danielle Green, a Queen's University student, held onto her first round lead to take the women's individual title. Green shot a two-day combined score of 159, three shots ahead of Western's Sue Gleeson (Peterborough, ON) and six shots ahead of third place Nonie Marler (Tsawwassen, BC) from Guelph.
