Mustangs surge over Varsity Blues in Toronto
TORONTO, Ont. – The Varsity Blues may have been first up on the scoreboard, but that didn't deter the Mustangs from surging over Toronto and recording a substantial victory at Varsity Centre.
The 86-10 win puts the Mustangs third overall in the OUA with a record of 4-1, only behind Queen's and Guelph. Meanwhile, the Varsity Blues remain winless at 0-6.
Consistent point leader, Mark Denton, maintained his spot at the top of the score sheet, recording eight converts throughout the game, totaling 16 points. Brady Rowland only narrowly missed out on the top spot, falling behind Denton with 15 points from three tries.
Toronto's Tudor Chirila opened up the scoreboard with a successful penalty goal less than two minutes into the game. Western quickly responded by preventing the Varsity Blues from adding to the scoreboard for the next 72 minutes.
Minutes after Toronto's goal, Rowland scored Western's first try of the night. Rowland kept adding points to the scoreboard as he also scored the second and third tries of the game at the 14 and 18 minute marks. All three were followed up with successful converts from Denton.
Rowland's quick succession of tries seemed to open up the floodgates, with four more tries and three converts scored for Western before the close of the first forty.
Heading into halftime, the Mustangs were up 47-3.
Returning to active play the game was still controlled by Western.
Six minutes into the second half Brendan Catliff was the first to add to the Mustang lead. The floodgates were reopened.
Running through the Varsity Blues, six more tries were added in the final forty of the game – two of which were accompanied by converts.
The unstoppable rush of purple and white points was only interrupted once, with a try and convert recorded for the Blues with five minutes remaining.
At the final whistle, Western had taken the game 86-10.
The Mustangs now have their sights set on October 17, when they take on the OUA first place team, the Guelph Gryphons. Western is set to play on home turf at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field.
