MUSTANGS AND BLUES MEN LEAD LIST OF SOCCER ALL STARS
Fourth-year midfielder Mike Bialy (Mississauga) captured MVP honours in the East Division and leads an impressive list of five Toronto players who were selected as first team All-Stars. Bialy netted seven goals in 14 regular season contests and set up the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory during the quarter-finals against Carleton. Four members of the defending OUA champion Ravens were recognized for their outstanding achievements on the pitch, including the dazzling second-year striker Kofi Ilboudo (Ottawa) who found the back of the net eight times during the 2006 campaign.
Coach of the Year honours goes to Steve Hart of the Windsor Lancers and Al MacVicar of the Queen's Golden Gaels. Hart led the Lancers (5-5-4) to fourth place in the West Division and improved his team's offensive output from minus-three last season to plus-six in 2006. MacVicar orchestrated a Gaels squad that won more games (10) than any other team in the OUA.
The T. Litzen Sports Ltd. OUA Rookies of the Year include York defender Jamaal Smith (Mississauga) and Trent midfielder Thaddeus Bolton (Bowmanville, Ontario). Smith is one of two York defenders (Gavin D'mello) chosen as a first team all star while Bolton is the first Trent player to receive a major award in quite some time, showing the promising future of the Excalibur.
A prestigious recognition within the OUA is the Student Athlete Community Service Award. The 2006 recipients are Guelph striker Jonathan Swan Smith (Summerside, PEI) and Laurentian midfielder Daniel Keir (Hamilton).
The OUA Men's Soccer Final Four is scheduled for this weekend at Brock University. In the semi-finals, Brock will face Toronto while Western Ontario squares off against Queen's. Each OUA first team all-star will receive a gift courtesy of Wilson Sports Equipment of Canada in recognition of their accomplishment.
