ANTHONY CAPOTOSTO NAMED BLUES SOCCER COACH
“We are thrilled that Anthony has accepted this appointment,” said Liz Hoffman, the Varsity Blues Director of Athletics. “We feel it will be a smooth transition for him and are confident in his abilities to lead the team while maintaining our established standards of excellence.”
An OUA all-star defender in all five of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a first team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001 and was the Blues rookie of the year for 1997. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to their most recent OUA title (2002). Capotosto holds team records for most goals by a defender in a game (3) and in a season (7).
"It is with great pride that I assume the role of Head Coach for the men's soccer team at the University of Toronto,” said Capotosto. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue to work with this group of talented student-athletes and enhance the profile of Varsity Blues Soccer in the CIS. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the former head coach Carmine Isacco for mentoring me over the past two seasons. I am excited and ready for this challenge."
Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in the past two CIS championship tournaments.
Prior to playing at U of T, Capotosto’s previous soccer experience included the 1993 Ontario provincial team, and winning championships at the 1994 U-16 U.S. Indoor National in Atlanta, the Ontario Cup (1993, 1995, 1996), the 1996 Canadian National and the 1997 Dallas Cup with the Oakville Winstars.
Capotosto holds a Canadian National 'B' coaching license and United States Soccer Federation National 'C' and 'Y' licenses. With these credentials Anthony has been an instructor with one of Canada's top soccer academies, providing him the opportunity to coach several elite youth players.
A graduate of U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science in 2002 with an Honours B.A., Capotosto earned his B.Ed. at OISE in 2003. He has taught physical and health education and history at Scarborough's Agincourt Collegiate Institute for four years. He continues to play in the Ontario Soccer League with Toronto Blues F.C., the Blues alumni team.
