MCMASTER ROWERS ENJOYING A SUCCESSFUL SUMMER
The Lucerne World Cup is the third in the series - Canada competed in World Cup 1 in Banyoles, Spain from May 29 to 31, bringing home four medals. Canada did not field a team for World Cup 2 in Munich, Germany from June 19 to 21.
Csima graduated from McMaster in 2007, and is currently living in Victoria, B.C. where he is working on his master's degree at the University of Victoria while training at the national training centre.
McMaster student-athlete Ian Connell (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), racing this summer for the St. Catharines Rowing Club, has had a fantastic season so far. He was part of the lightweight men's eights that placed first in the heavyweight men's eights race at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
McMaster rowing alumni Aubrey Oldham (Hamilton, Ont.) and Jordan Clarke (London, Ont.) coached by McMaster alumni and former McMaster rowing president and captain Michael Stanisz (Dundas, Ont.) are currently competing for the Leander heavyweight men's eights have also had good results this summer and are setting their sights on the Ontario championships and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta later this summer.
Also on the radar this summer are McMaster student-athletes, Matt McCoy (Cavan, Ont.) racing for the Peterborough Rowing Club and Ameen Mirjan (Mississauga, Ont.) competing for the Don Rowing Club of Mississauga, Ont..
On the women's side, McMaster student-athletes and Ontario University Athletics (OUA) novice women's silver medallists, Gina Demczuk (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kristen King (Stouffville, Ont.), have joined McMaster student-athletes Emily Loyer (Peterborough, Ont.) and Alethia Hazaras (Dundas, Ont.) as part of the Leander lightweight women's crew this summer. The team is coached by McMaster rowing alumnus, former president and 2008 assistant coach, Andrea Valois (Cobourg, Ont.).
Valois is also the head women's rowing coach for Hamilton Westdale Secondary School. This spring her team captured the gold medal in the junior women's eights, the first eights win for Westdale ever at the regatta. Her team also earned a bronze at the junior women's fours at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championship.
The McMaster rowing team will begin training camp on August 29.
