Mustangs sweep meet against Brock, Waterloo, and Laurentian
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs swimming team returned to the pool at the Western Student Recreation Centre on Saturday, hosting Brock, Waterloo, and Laurentian in a series of dual meets. The Mustangs defended their home pool in a strong fashion, capturing many strong individual performances as well as both the men’s and women’s teams going 3-0 against their opponents.
In addition to the Western A and Western B relay teams finishing first and second respectively for both the men’s and women’s division, twenty individual races were held in total. From those races, Mustangs swimmers accumulated almost fifty individual third-place-or-better finishes between the men’s and women’s teams. The meet was a competitive one, as several of the races were initially deemed too close to call and had to be reviewed to set the official winning times.
Several of the individual matches were dominated by Mustangs swimmers. Elisa Coloantonio set the pace in the first individual race, the women`s 400M freestyle, finishing first for the Mustangs in with a time of 4:34.72.
Later, in the men’s 50M backstroke, nineteen participants would race in three heats and Mustangs swimmers posted the top nine times in the event, including Louis Wong with the top time of 26.68. Many Mustangs swimmers achieved multiple top three finishes in their various events. Katie Keeping and Jennifer McNaughton each had three top 3 finishes. Several swimmers, including Elisa Coloantonio, Leeann Midgley, Shannon Nell, Christopher Williamson, Emily Sproule and Louis Wong each had two top 3 finishes. Wong`s finishes were both first place times.
Events 11 (women’s 100M freestyle) and 21 (women’s 50M butterfly) had the Mustangs place first through sixth in both events. Mustangs swimmers went first through fifth in Event 18, the men’s 50M freestyle, and would place first through forth in Events 17 and 19, the women’s 50M freestyle and the women’s 200M IM respectively. As well, Event 15 (women’s 200M backstroke) had the Western swim team place consecutively in the top three. In fact, the only event in which Western did not have a top three finish was Event 6, the men`s 200M breaststroke.
The last event of the day, the 200M mixed freestyle relay, was fittingly won by the dominating Mustangs team.
After all points were tabulated, the Mustangs swept each of the head-to-head competitions on both the men's and women's side. Swim Report: Western and Laurier meets
The Warriors swim teams are putting in some great performances as they make their final preparations heading into OUA champs. This weekend provided an opportunity to race 7 of the other 12 teams in the OUA and Waterloo fared very well.
Saturday, January 26 at Western
Saturday the team was at Western along with Laurentian and Brock. Two team records and a near CIS qualifying swim highlighted things for the women's team. Frances Heather (Waterloo) and Alex Chow lowered their team records in the 50 back and 50 fly respectively. Bronwyn Kemp (Waterloo) won the 200 breast by a wide margin and posted a time only 0.04 seconds away from the CIS standard. Other highlights for the women included: Marlee Palmer (Kingston)'s 3rd place finish in the 400 free and a 3rd place finish for the medley relays (Frances, Bronwyn, Meaghen Vydelingum (Toronto), Alex).
The men provided some positive performances with several top 3 finishes: 400 free – Cam McKnight 2nd; Nathan Wilson (St. John's) 3rd; 200 breast Graeme Kemp (Waterloo) 1st, Darius Ling (Unionville) 2nd; 200 fly Andrew Lee (Thornhill) 2nd; 100 free Evan Dzik (Winnipeg) 1st; 50 breast Chris Stern 3rd; 200 back Brian Dohler (Smithers) 2nd; 200 IM Graeme Kemp (Waterloo) 1st, Andrew Lee (Thornhill) 3rd.
The teams finished second in both the men's and women's meet behind a very strong Western team. Laurentian and Brock have been longtime rivals of the women's squad and this is a real positive heading into the championship season.

Laurier Meet Race Results
On Sunday the team made their way down University Avenue to race at Laurier with McMaster, Guelph, York and Laurentian. The women were again led by Bronwyn Kemp (Waterloo) who won the 100 breast with a solid swim. Alex Chow continued her fast swimming with a win in the 50 fly and the 100 free. Linz Buckingham finished 2nd in the 100 free and 3rd in the 200 free with a well split race. Frances Heather (Waterloo) raced to 3rd in the 200 back with a much improved performance.
Evan Dzik (Winnipeg) is building towards a great CIS campaign with a 2nd in the 50 fly and a win the 200 free. Andrew Lee (Thornhill) and Graham Fink (Oakville) came 1, 2 in the 200 back and Andrew later placed 3rd in the 200 free. Darius Ling (Unionville) was 3rd in the 50 breast. Graeme Kemp (Waterloo) won the 100 back and was 3rd in the 100 breast.
There is only 10 days until the OUA champs in Toronto and there is a lot of technical aspects of the races to be improved on. The Warriors posted several lifetime bests and are heading into the meet very confident.
