Swimmers sweep Pioneer Energy OUA athlete of the week awards

MALE: Zach Chetrat, Toronto Varsity Blues, Swimming
Fourth-year veteran Zack Chetrat was named the OUA male swimmer of the year in leading the Varsity Blues to their 10th straight provincial title this weekend (Feb. 7-9) at Varsity Pool. The Oakville, Ont., native opened the meet by breaking teammate Frank Despond’s 2012 OUA record in the men’s 400 freestyle in a time of 3:47.87. He then shattered his own 2011 record in the 200 butterfly (1:59.25) by almost three full seconds, setting a new mark in 1:56.34. Chetrat was honoured with the Grand Slam award, claiming a fourth OUA 200 butterfly title in his university career. The economics and political science major also anchored U of T’s OUA recording-breaking 800 freestyle relay team and earned OUA first team all-star status.
FEMALE: Alisha Harricharian, Guelph Gryphons, Swimming
Standout swimmer Alisha Harricharian swept the butterfly events en route to a triple performance at the 2013 OUA Swimming Championships this past weekend and was named the OUA female swimmer of the year. The third-year Psychology student opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.80. The next day she claimed another gold with a first place finish in the 50 butterfly with a time of 27.52. A native of Brampton, Ont., Harricharian completed the sweep on day three, claiming the gold in the 100m butterfly, setting a new OUA record with a time of 1:00.22. She also added a bronze medal in the women’s 4 x 50 freestyle relay and is now off to the CIS Championships next week in Calgary (Feb. 21-23).
