BLUES SWIMMERS WIN UNIVERSITY CUP
The Varsity Blues men’s and women’s swimming team each placed first as they hosted the 2012 University Cup on Thursday, November 22 at Varsity Pool.
Toronto’s men finished with 302 points, 21 points ahead of the Alberta Golden Bears. The Blues women totalled 296 points, 33 points ahead of the Alberta Pandas.
Altogether, U of T won 16-of-20 events, also earning the combined championship title with 598 points.
“Simply exceptional,” commented Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. “Winning is always nice because it means you rose to the challenge, but in our sport you are also judged by times, and our times were impressive.”
Fourth-year veteran Zach Summerhayes of Waterloo, Ont., broke the two-minute barrier in the 200 individual medley, a time that would have won him the CIS gold medal last season.
“Zach has struggled through a myriad of injuries since he was a top prospect at age 16,” said MacDonald. “But now we are seeing the potential become a reality.”
Zack Chetrat (Oakville, Ont.) won both the 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while sophomore standout Brian Lee (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) came out on top in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
In women’s action, co-captains Andrea Jurenovskis and Vanessa Treasure led the way for the Blues. Jurenovskis (Timmins, Ont.) won the 100 backstroke, and 50 and 100 freestyle races, while Treasure (Mississauga, Ont.) also won triple gold, placing first in the 100 and 200 IM, and 100 breast stroke events.
