No. 9 Lancers open season with victory over Hawks
The No. 9 Lancer women's basketball team opened up the regular season with an 85-80 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Prior to the game, the Department of Athletics recognized the five-time defending champions by raising their championship banner into the rafters and presented the team with their championship rings.
Cheyanne Roger led the Blue & Gold on opening night with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Registering the games only other double-double, Emily Prevost kicked in 17 points and 10 rebounds while Erica McFadden had 14 points in her Lancer debut, and Andrea Kiss had 13.
The Golden Hawks were led by Nicole Morrison who had a game high 21 points and 7 assists. Kaitlyn Schenck and Sarah Dillon each chipped in 13 points, while Courtney Bruce added 12 points and a team high 4 rebounds.
No one team dominated the play during the first half as the first 20 minutes saw a lot of back and forth play. Laurier held a narrow two point, 20-18, lead after the first quarter but some solid shooting from Roger and McFadden in the second gave the Lancers a 37-32 lead heading into the break.
The second half was similar to the first with each team winning a quarter by two points.
Laurier dominated the free throw line going 10-11 (90.9%) from the charity stripe, while the Lancers shot 76.2% on 16-for-21. The Golden Hawks made one more field goal than the Lancers, and went 45% from the arch compared to Windsor 41%.

Mustangs win big in season opener against Waterloo
LONDON, Ont. – First-year forward Julia Curran didn't waste anytime before making an impact on her new team, leading the Mustangs in scoring in Western's season opening 86-53 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
Brian Cheng, head coach of the Western Mustangs, referred to Curran as a "generational player."
"They come once every ten, fifteen years. Their soul is just to compete, they're so competitive and so internally driven," he said, referring to special players like Curran. "Julia's just gonna keep getting better and better."
Curran tallied a big 18 points against the Warriors, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Mackenzie Puklicz and Maddy Horst came in just behind Curran on the Mustangs scoresheet, recording 17 and 15 points respectively. Victoria Heine led Western's rebounding game, grabbing nine boards in the win.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Kristen Osborne, who notched 19 points and four rebounds. Jacqui Rodrigues was the only other Waterloo player in double digits with 13 points.
From the tipoff, the Mustangs took the lead and never let it go.
The accuracy of the teams' shots were relatively close during the first ten minutes. The Mustangs sunk 38.9% of regular shots and 25% of threes compared to the Warriors 33.3% and 25%. However, Western was ultimately able to spend more time near their opponents' basket, take a larger total number of shots, and end the quarter with a 19-9 lead.
Behind by ten points, the Warriors determined to close the gap in the second quarter, and pulled within seven points a few minutes in, however the Mustangs only increased their lead from there. At the hoop, the purple and white captured 15 rebounds compared to Waterloo's five, contributing to the 41-20 lead for Western by half.
The Warriors came out strong in the second half, scoring the first three points following the break. The momentum didn't last long though, as the Mustangs responded with more baskets including four three pointers by four different players to give Western a 28-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Mustangs fought off the Warriors' full court press in the final quarter of the game. Their success can partially be attributed to their increased success in shot accuracy, as they hit 45 percent of their field goals and 40.9 percent of their three pointers when all was said and done, compared to 30.9 and 27.8 percent success rates for the Warriors in the same categories.
Following her impressive debut Curran reflected on what will keep her and her team successful in the games to come.
"If we build up a lead, we gotta play like we're behind," she said. "Just keep rebounding and boxing out, and if we play hard we'll be successful."
Western now gets set to head on the road on Saturday, November 7 when they'll face the Laurier Golden Hawks. Tipoff is at 1 p.m., and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
Rams set rebounding record in big win over Toronto
TORONTO – The No. 4 Ryerson Rams women's basketball team put in a dominating performance in their season opener, cruising to a 78-36 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.) had a game-high 17 points and added six steals and five assists to lead the Rams while Cara Tiemens (Newmarket, Ont.) and Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) each added 13 points in the win.
Paska and Siki Jez (Kitchener, Ont.) had big nights on the glass, each picking up 14 rebounds which ties them for seventh in Ryerson history for rebounds in a game. As a team the Rams finished with 72 rebounds, setting a new team record.
"Some of Sofia's rebounds came from her missing shots she might normally make so she'd probably like to see more shots go in and a few less rebounds, actually, but I think that's a testament to her and how far she's come," said head coach Carly Clarke following the game. "She keeps making second efforts when she misses."
The Rams were off and running right from the get go on Wednesday, outscoring Toronto 19-0 through the first 7:20 of the game. At the end of ten minutes Ryerson had a comfortable 21-6 lead.
Toronto shored up their defence in the second quarter as the Rams were held to 12 points, their lowest quarter output on the night. Ryerson also held the Blues to 12 points in the frame so the teams headed to half with the Rams leading 33-18.
It was more of the Rams dominant defence in the second half, limiting the Blues to another 18 total points to finish the game allowing less than 40 points.
"I thought the game was great – if you can hold any team to under 40 points it's an achievement in itself," noted Pingue-Giles after the win.
Toronto's Emily Piccini had a team-high nine points in the loss.
The Rams are back in action next Wednesday, November 11 when they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders who opened the season ranked No. 1 in the country. The battle of nationally ranked teams is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv
