KINGSTON, Ont. (November 21, 2015)- The Queen's Gaels (4-1) women's basketball team had its regular season winning streak snapped at four games on Saturday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), falling to the CIS No. 7 ranked Brock Badgers (3-1) 69-50.

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 21, 2015)- The Queen's Gaels (4-1) women's basketball team had its regular season winning streak snapped at four games on Saturday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), falling to the CIS No. 7 ranked Brock Badgers (3-1) 69-50.
Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) and Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) each tallied 13 points, while Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) added 11 in a losing cause for the Gaels, who drop to 4-1 on the season. Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Kate Harpur notched a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Badgers, who built an impressive lead with a potent third quarter after the teams went into halftime even; a lead which proved insurmountable for the Gaels. Brock improves to 3-1 on the year with the victory.
GAME FLOW
Priamo picked up the game's first four points with consecutive lay-ins to give the hosts an early lead. The Guelph, Ont. native then drove the lane and kicked the ball out to Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.), who sank a three-pointer while being fouled. Dixon converted her free-throw, spreading the Gael advantage.
Kira Cornelissen helped the Badgers keep pace with seven points in the opening quarter. And after turning the ball over four times in the opening minutes of the contest, Brock settled into the game and managed to cut the lead down to a single point. Alexandra Symonds then proceeded to knock in a three-pointer of her own to give the visitors their first lead. The advantage was short lived, however, as Dixon found the basket from beyond the arc once again, putting Queen's slightly ahead at the end of the first quarter.
The half took a chippy turn early in the second quarter, as the teams traded four-straight turnovers. Hazlett made a nice move on her drive to the basket, going behind the back and up for a stylish lay-in to help pace the Gael offence. With the rest of her team quieting down offensively in the first few minutes of the quarter, the Fredericton, N.B. native tried to pick up the slack, draining a corner three to keep Queen's ahead for the time being.
Harpur took the reins of the Badger offence in the latter stages of the half, however, tallying six points in a row to level the match at 26-26 heading into the half-time break.
The Badgers then came out firing to open the second half, hitting eight of their first 10 shots in the third quarter. An 18-4 run allowed the guests to jump out to a 14-point advantage, leading to a timeout by Gaels coach Dave Wilson.
The Badger wave did not stop, however, as Aryn Finley nailed a three-pointer, which was quickly followed by a three-point play by Jenalyn Lumol after a Gaels turnover, pushing the lead up to 21. By the time the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter, the Badgers had notched 28 points and the Gaels faced a 17-point deficit.
Dixon attempted to get the Gaels back in the match with a three early in the fourth, but Kayla Santilli answered with a basket from beyond the arc in transition to maintain Brock's spread. Her teammate Finley knocked down her second three of the match on the Badgers next possession, and Cornelissen picked up a lay-up bucket following that, pushing the lead back over 20, which proved more than enough to pick up the win.
The Gaels shot 30.3% from the floor on Saturday, compared to 43.5% from the Badgers, who also outrebounded Queen's 47-36.

"The adjustments that Brock made to our ball-screen defence really made it difficult for us to counter some of their options," said Wilson. "If we took away their first option, they were able to move to something else. And the size that they have with their posts, particularly with the fact that they can shoot the ball well, it gave us a lot of trouble."

Hawks score early and often to down Warriors
The Laurier Golden Hawks scored early and often to hand Waterloo a tough 88-56 loss on Saturday at the PAC. The Golden Hawks jumped out to a 12-2 lead thanks to four 3-pointers, three coming from Nicole Morrison as the third year guard caught fire early in this contest.
The Hawks would go on to outscore the Warriors 32-8 in the opening quarter and the gap was too large to overcome the rest of the way. Waterloo did manage to outscore the visitors 20-15 in the second quarter but Laurier found their shooting stroke again in the third quarter and would cruise to the easy 32 point victory.
Laurier shot 41.3% from the field while knocking down 10 from beyond the arc while Waterloo went 28.4% and only hit two from downtown.
Morrison led all scorers with 21 points going 7-for-14 from the field while Alexandra Spadaro had 17 for the Golden Hawks. Spadaro was also big on the boards with 10 rebounds, the most in the game.
Top scorer for the Warriors was Emily Wilk (Oakville) who had 18 points going 7-for-16 from the field while hitting all three of her free throw attempts. Kristen Osborne (Markham) was the only other Warrior in double digits with 12 points. Osborne also led the way on the glass with six rebounds.
The Warriors will be back in action next Friday at the PAC against York. Tipoff is set for 6pm and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

No. 10 Lancers dominate visiting Varsity Blues
The No. 10 Lancer women's basketball team dominated the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues 96-60 on Saturday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre.
With the win, the Lancers are now 4-1 on the season and continue to hold on to first place in the OUA west division, while the Blues fall to 1-3 and sit in third in the east.
With the Lancers leading 26-14 after the first quarter of play, the Blues went on a 7-0 run to open the second and make it a five point game. The visitors outscored the Lancers 20-16 in the second quarter playing a strong defensive game and the Lancers only led by 42-34 at the break.
Although the Blues applied some heavy back court pressure to open the second half, the Lancers fought back and held the Blues to just eight points. From there, the Lancers dominated the floor building a 38 point lead with just over a minute to go in regulation, en route to their dominating win.
Second year guard Carly Steer led the Blue & Gold with 16 points, while Emily Prevost recorded yet another double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and Andrea Kiss had 14 points, 9 rebounds.
The Lancers will close out the first half of their season next week in the nation's capital when they face the Ottawa Gee Gees on Friday and the Carleton Ravens on Saturday. Both games are at 6:00pm and can be seen live at www.oua.tv.

No. 4 Marauders too much for Lions on Bill Pangos Night
The York University Lions women's basketball team fell to the fourth-ranked McMaster Marauders on Saturday night (Nov. 21) by a score of 86-45 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
After falling behind 32-2 after the first quarter the Lions began to claw their way back into the game, and leading the march was Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.), who scored a team high 11 points to go with four rebounds and four steals.
The Lions outscored the Marauders 11-10 in the second quarter and stayed close with the Marauders throughout the second half. After the half the Lions played with intensity and high tempo which began to shrink the Marauders commanding lead, but the Marauders closed out the game with multiple stretches of unanswered buckets for the convincing win.
Sandra Nagowska (Peterborough, Ont.) was dominant in the paint and led the Lions in rebounding with six.
Danielle Boiago of the Marauders was utilized early and often in Saturday's game as she finished with a game-high in points and rebounds, putting up a double-double with 24 points and 12 boards.
As part of the evening's festivities, the Lions recognized long-time head coach Bill Pangos, who retired at the end of last season after 29 years at the helm of the program, and plenty of alumni were in the crowd to honour the former coach.
The Marauders improved their record to 4-1 on the season while the Lions are still looking for their first victory at 0-4. The :ions are back on the hardwood next Friday (Nov. 27) when they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors in a contest beginning at 6pm.

Kate MacTavish surpasses 1000 career points in 71-32 win
Guelph, ON: The Gryphons women's basketball team defeats the Nipissing Lakers 71-32, Saturday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre in a special night for the 5th year standout, Kate MacTavish as she picked up her 1,000th career point.
The Bio-Medical Sciences major, MacTavish completed the milestone midway through the first quarter when she asserted herself in the paint as she finished off the layoff by the rim scoring her third basket of the game and reaching the 1,000th point plateau in her career. The Gryphons faithful gave her a great ovation to acknowledge the special moment for MacTavish in her illustrious career as a Gryphon. MacTavish wasn't done there as she had herself a monster game finishing with a double-double. MacTavish tallied 21 points, 16 rebounds including 10 on the offensive end throughout the night.
The Gryphons really asserted themselves at the rim and especially in the first half as they out rebounded the Lakers 27-17 and grabbed 10 rebounds off the offensive glass. The Lakers were held to 4-26 shooting from the field in the half.
Guelph defensively held the Lakers to their lowest point total of the season forcing a lot of shot clock violations, turnovers and suffocating defense held them to 9-54 shooting. The hosts utilized their advantage on the boards as they outrebounded Nipissing 47-27 and 16-8 on the offensive end. Kate Yallin of Guelph finished with 12 points, Bridget Atkinson had 10 and the bench scored 25 points in extended minutes led by Haley Belyk's seven.
The game didn't end the way they wanted for the Gryphons as Megan Brenkel sustained a lower body injury in a collision at the net with 6:51 remaining. The Gryphons improve to 6-1 as they play their next game, Saturday, November 28th when they are on the road in Hamilton to face MacMaster.

The uOttawa women's basketball team stretched its regular season record to 5-0 with a 74-23 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6) on Saturday night at Montpetit Hall. The win extends Ottawa's overall winning streak to nine games against CIS competition, dating back to exhibition action in October.
Catherine Traer led the Gee-Gees in scoring with 21 points, maintaining her season average of 19.6 which ranks fourth in the CIS. First-year centre Anne Wagar came off the bench with 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Ottawa shot 21-for-27 from the free throw line as a team.
"The game slows down for her, she's not a player who plays out of control. For a first year player that's a major benefit," said head coach Andy Sparks of Wagar. "She matches up against Katherine Lemoine and Isabelle Dion every day in practice and that's paid off – she's really comfortable with the physical aspects of the game."
Ottawa used defensive pressure early on to generate baskets off turnovers. Algoma committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter, contributing to a 23-1 Gee-Gees advantage after the first ten minutes. The Thunderbirds missed their first 11 field goals.
"In general we've seen that Katherine Lemoine has not been someone that people are able to post up against. She's been a defensive lockdown and Anne was very good as well there today," added Sparks.
A well-executed inbounds play on the baseline with 0.9 seconds left in the second quarter resulted in an and-one by Catherine Traer and sent the garnet and grey into halftime up 37-11. The second quarter would prove to be Algoma's best, limiting turnovers and outscored by just four points.
Ottawa will be at home again next weekend, closing out the fall schedule with games against Windsor (4-1) and Western (3-1).

The women's basketball team survived an all-out three-point assault by the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night, winning 81-73.
Of their 68 shots, the visiting Voyageurs shot an incredible 49 from behind the three-point line, hitting 15 of them.
Gillian Lavoie's game was stepped up yet again, this time scoring 20 points with 11 rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the Thunderwolves.
Back up point guard Rachel Webber (photo left) was anything and everything her team needed her to be, as she scored 8 points with 5 assists, but made her biggest impact on defense. With the Voyageurs threatening late, Webber's tenacious defense on Danielle Harris in the backcourt got the wily Laurentian vet off balance. Harris barrelled into Webber in an attempt to draw a foul, but Webber's quick footwork kept her squared up to Harris, who was called for the offensive foul, thus extinguishing any hope of a Voyageurs comeback.
"This was a big win for us as we pull back to .500. Laurentian beat us last year in a tough defensive battle but tonight the net was big and both teams filled it up. The key for us was getting the ball inside. Gill Lavoie was big for us tonight and Jerika continues to do a great job distributing the ball. We now need to get ready for a very tough weekend at Brock for two divisional games."
