FREDERICTON (CIS) –The University of Alberta Pandas women's basketball team gets to play one more game.
After a disappointing loss to Saint Mary's Huskies, by a single point yesterday, the Pandas rallied in the fourth quarter of the consolation semi-final to defeat University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 69-60. The Pandas will now play Saturday, at 5:00PM Atl., against the winner of the second consolation game between Regina and UNB.
The Pandas trailed by six after the first quarter, by twelve at the half and by 17 points in the third quarter. Led by Elle Hendershot and Megan Wickstrom, both with 14 points, the Pandas never felt they were out of the game.
Catherine Traer had 18 points for the Ottawa Gee-Gees. She said the loss was hard to explain. "All year long, we were that team over there. We were down by 21 some games, 17 others, but we always found a way to come back. This is the first time it has happened to us," she said.
"Alberta made a lot of clutch shots when they needed to," said Traer. "Of course we are disappointed, but we take away a lot of experience at the tournament. We only have one senior on the team, and everyone played, so we all gained for this weekend. We feel we are a team of learners, not losers, so we all learned a lot."
