W-Hockey Roundup: York upends No. 5 Queen's, No. 10 Guelph sweeps weekend
October 27
Toronto 4 at Nipissing 0
Despite picking up their play as the game went on, a slow start cost the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team Sunday night as they were shut out by the University of Toronto 4-0.
U of T controlled the early part of the game, scoring four times on their first 13 shots and locked it down from there, even with late pressure by the Lakers to try to ruin the shutout bid.
In the final frame, the Lakers did outshoot U of T 11-5, but it was too little, too late as Nipissing settled for a split of a pair of home games this weekend.
With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-5-0 on the season.
Jackie Rochefort was back in between the pipes for the Lakers, as she got both starts this weekend.
The Lakers will look to bounce back from this loss next weekend when they travel down Highway 17 to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first meeting of the two northern rivals.
Both teams currently have identical records and are tied in the standings with four points.

?Finally, a one-goal game went the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team’s way, as they snapped their four game winless streak with a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon on home ice over the Ryerson Rams.

Toronto 2 at Laurentian 3 (SO)
The Laurentian Voyageurs Women’s hockey team made history tonight with a shootout win against the Toronto Varsity Blues. It was the Voyageurs first shootout since their inauguration for the 2013-14 season and Laura Deller stopped 29 shots and led the team to a 3-2 victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Varsity Blues opened the scoring at 7:58 of the second period with Amanda Ricker getting the tally and Alie Brind’Amour with the helper.
Jessica Staats scored her first goal of the season to tie up the game at 14:03 of the third while on the power play. Toronto forward Katherine Gale was in the box serving a too many men penalty. Assists went to Amanda Pereira and Julie Hebert.
After 40 minutes the score was tied at 1 apiece, with shots 17-14 in favour of the Voyageurs.
The Blues got a quick start in the third when Toronto forward Taylor Day showed her moves with a beautiful dangle just 22 seconds into the third period.
The lead didn’t last long before Samantha Morell tied it up 6 minutes later after getting the pass from Herbert, who got her second assist of the game. Herbert blocked a Blues shot inside the defensive zone and fed Morell the puck for a break-away. Morell lost the puck but revived it and eventually sniped the puck top corner on Toronto goalie Michaela Logan. It was Morell’s fifth point in 6 games, and fourth goal of the season.
Voyageurs had a scare late in the third period when the Blues appeared to have taken the lead after a scrum around the net. The excitement didn’t last long for the Blues before the goal was waved off due to the net coming off the posts. After 60 minutes the game was at a 2-2 draw with shots 21 to 28 in favour of Toronto.
The Blues started off overtime on the power play while Pereira was serving the remainder of a tripping penalty that came at 1:17 remaining in the third. The Blues came up empty handed, but got another chance at the power play at the 3:46 mark when Maggie Brennan went off for hooking. The Voyageurs fought hard and Deller stopped 2 shots in overtime to bring it to the shootout.
Deller stopped the Blues first attempt, and Laurentian captain Hebert put them up 1-0 in the shootout after deking Logan, bringing it to her backhand and shooting the puck into an open net. Deller and Logan both stopped the second round attempts by Blues’ Courtney Brind-Amour and Voyageurs’ Victoria Medeiros. The Blues tied it up on their third attempt when Kristi Riseley went wide and got the puck past Deller. Morell got the controversial game winner on Laurentian’s third try. Logan initially appeared to have made the save on Morell, but after further review the puck was in the back of the net, giving the Voyageurs the game winner and leading them past the Blues 3-2. The game ended with shots 31-24 for Toronto and a total of 22 penalty minutes.

Queen’s 5 at UOIT 2
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team dropped their third straight game on home ice as the No. 5 ranked Queen’s Gaels picked up a 5-2 victory over the Ridgebacks on Friday night.
After winning four straight road games to begin the season including a 2-1 overtime victory over the Gaels, UOIT has been swept on home ice with losses coming against Waterloo, Laurier and Queen’s.

Guelph 5 at Laurier 3
WATERLOO, Ont. (Oct. 23, 2013) - The No. 4 ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team played host to the Guelph Gryphons Wednesday for the first meeting of the season. After earning three wins in a row on the road, the Hawks looked to continue their success at home, however were unable to overcome a strong Gryphons' offence falling in a 3-5 decision.
The Gryphons jumped out to an early lead in the first on an unassisted goal from Mississauga, Ont., native Christine Grant. Grant would hit the board again in the second when she earned an assist on a goal from Kaitlyn Mora of Guelph, Ont. That left the Hawks trailing by two going into the third period.
It wasn't until the half way through the third after Guelph had extended their lead to three, that the Hawks were able to generate some offensive results. Robyn Degagne of North Bay, Ont., put the Hawks on the board with assists coming from Candice Styles of Orangeville, Ont., and Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont.
The goals did not deter the Gryphons who add a fourth just seconds before Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., would give the Hawks their second of the game. Brooker would also earn an assist on a Golden Hawk third goal from Palgrave, Ont. native Jessie Hurrell.
Despite potting three goals on eleven shots in the third period the Hawks were unable to gain ground on the Gryphons in the 3-5 loss. Brooker, Hurrell and Heather Platt of Mississauga, Ont., all earn two points in the loss.
The Hawks will look to recover from the loss Saturday when they host the Brock Badgers. The puck drops at 7:30 PM at the Sun Life Financial Arena.
