WOMEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Mustangs upset No. 2 Gaels

UOIT 1 @ Waterloo 2
Carolyn Burke (Mississauga) scored two highlight reel goals including the game winner with less than four minutes left to give Waterloo a 2-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on home ice, Saturday afternoon, Waterloo's first home game since November 2.
With the win the Warriors snapped a four game losing streak and picked up a crucial two points in the tight OUA standings. The black and gold remain in eighth with a 5-6-3 record but gained ground on Windsor and Western who are tied for the seventh spot each with 15 points. Meanwhile the Ridgebacks, who fell to 8-6-1 on the season, occupy fifth overall with 17 points.
Waterloo starting netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was tested early and often but made several big saves to keep the game locked at zeros. The Ridgebacks would however find the opening goal at the 9:31 minute mark of the first as Samantha Forchielli found the open puck in the slot off a broken play and wired it past a helpless Bouwhuis. Forchielli's fifth of the season was assisted by Jaclyn Gibson.
The score would stay 1-0 in UOIT's favour before Burke would put the Warriors on her back and even the score at one. The second year geography student turned up the jets and split the Ridgebacks' defenders before wiring the shot top corner past Cassie Charette. Michelle Tanel (Toronto) was credited with the lone assist on the equalizer.
With the score all even to start the third period, UOIT once again turned up the pressure but Bouwhuis kept the black and gold in it with timely saves allowing Burke to emerge as the hero. Marissa Redmond (Ajax), who was buzzing all game long, found an unmarked Burke all alone in the slot and her wrister would get past Charette on the blocker side to give the home side the 2-1 lead.Â
The Warriors defence would fight off any remaining UOIT chances and the Warriors would hang on for the 2-1 win. Bouwhuis stopped 23 of 24 shots for the win while Charette gave up two goals on 21 shots in a losing effort.

York 2 @ Laurier 4
WATERLOO, Ont. (November 30, 2013) - Thanks to a 48-shot barrage, the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team earned a 4-2 victory over the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

The Hawks dominated offensive zone time against the Lions as they peppered York goalie Megan Lee of Orillia, Ont., with 21 shots in the first period and 18 more in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Laurier would slow up in the final frame but had a comfortable lead and easily cruised to their eighth straight victory.

The purple and gold got goals from four different players including Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., Dollee Meigs of Owen Sound, Ont., and Heather Platt of Mississuaga, Ont., who scored the game winning goal late in the second period.

Captain Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., dished out a pair of assists in the win to finish as the game's only multi-point scorer.

Laurier goalie Amanda Smith of Burlington, Ont., finished the contest with 20 saves to pick up her eighth win of the season. Lee, who kept the Lions in the contest in the first half of the contest, wound up making 44 saves in a losing effort.

With the win, Laurier improves to 12-2-0 on the season while York falls into a tie for last place in the conference at 3-10-1 and has now lost eight straight games.

Windsor 2 @ Queen’s 3
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 30, 2013) - Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) put the Gaels ahead with four minutes remaining in the game to give No. 2 Queen's the 3-2 victory over Windsor on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Centre.

The Gaels went ahead five minutes into the game when Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) scored from Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.). Queen's added a second goal midway through the first, with Michele Knecht (North York, Ont.) burying her first as a Gael.

Windsor mounted a second period comeback, as Erinn Noseworthy netted a goal in the first minute of the period after the Lancers killed a penalty. With Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) in the penalty box, Jillian Rops scored a power-play goal to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third.

As the game wound down, Wakefield played the hero for Queen's, tipping McHaffie's shot past Marissa Kozovski and in.

Kozovski finished with 26 saves in the loss, while Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) picked up the win with her 14 save performance in goal for the Gaels.

Laurentian 2 @ Toronto 4
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs 4-2 on Saturday, November 30 at Varsity Arena.
The win is the Blues 10th of the season, and improves their record to 10-3-1. With the win, they also gain ground on the idle Guelph Gryphons who sit third in the OUA.
Third-year defenceman Caitlin Maikawa was named the first star of the game. The Markham native picked up a goal and an assist, both coming on the powerplay.
Amanda Ricker (Ottawa) also had a goal and an assist in the win, while Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) and Courtney Brind'Amour-McClure each put up single tallies. Day's goal is her seventh of the season, which gives the sophomore forward the team lead.
Rookie goaltender Michaela Logan (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 19 saves for her second win in four starts this season.
The Blues opened the scoring on the powerplay midway through the opening period, when Maikawa walked the line and fired a seeing eye shot that found its way through traffic and past Voyageurs goaltender Emily Toffoli.
Laurentian was quick to respond, striking less than two minutes later on a rebound goal from Victoria Medeiros.
The two teams traded goals again shortly after with Brind'Amour-McClure putting the Blues ahead on a goal set up by Ricker, before Amanda Pereira scored the Voyageurs to even the game at 2-2.
Taylor Day would finally put the Blues ahead for good 1:38 into the second period. The second-year forward streaked up the ice and received a breakaway pass from team captain Kelly O'Hanlon. Day raced in alone and made no mistake, ripping the puck over the shoulder of Toffoli to put the Blues up 3-2.
Ricker added the insurance marker late in the period on the powerplay when she deflected a point shot from Maikawa to give them both their second points of the night.
The Blues would hang on thanks to Logan's superb efforts in the third period, including killing off three consecutive powerplays to end the game and secure the 4-2 victory.

Nipissing 5 @ Ryerson 1
TORONTO - The Nipissing Lakers scored four unanswered goals on Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, defeating the Ryerson Rams, 5-1.
Kristen Dewsbury scored her first goal of the season and first as a Laker to get the scoring started almost 10 minutes into the first period.
Melissa Wronzberg (Thornhill, Ont.) replied back a few minutes later, scoring shorthanded for her fourth goal of the season.
Only a minute later, Nipissing would reply with Brooklyn Irwin notching her fourth of the season and giving her team the lead going into the first intermission.
It was all Lakers from there on out scoring three more times, including once on the powerplay, and that would be the difference.
Jade Gauthier was the star for the Lakers, scoring twice and now leads the team with eight goals on the season.
Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, N.S.) got the start for Ryerson and made 15 saves through two periods, suffering the loss. She was relieved by Cassandra McNichol (Toronto) at the start of the third period who let in one goal on six shots.
Jacqueline Rochefort was the winning goaltender on Saturday, making 22 saves for her fourth win of the season.
The loss drops Ryerson’s record to 5-9 on the season.

Nipissing 0 @ Toronto 2
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 11-3-1 and sit in third place heading into the December exam break.
After a scoreless first period, third-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel opened the scoring when she banged in a Stacey Oue rebound on the powerplay 11:47 into the second frame.
Blues leading scorer Taylor Day added an insurance marker with 48 seconds remaining in the period when she received a pass from Kelly O'Hanlon behind the net and made no mistake slotting it past Lakers goalie Jacqueline Rochefort.
Fourth-year goalie Nicole Kesteris posted 18 saves in her fourth shut out victory of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice in the new year when they host the York Lions on Friday, January 10 at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

Waterloo will head into the exam break on a high note, winning their last two games to move back to .500 on the season at 6-6-3, good for a tie with Windsor for seventh. York continues to move down the standings going 1-8-1 in their past 10 and 3-11-1 overall.
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was forced to make only 16 saves for her first shutout of the season while York's keeper Megan Lee allowed the five markers on 29 Warrior shots.
Burke opened the scoring 15:44 into the first period showing her nice breakaway speed and sliding in the puck between the legs of Lee to put Waterloo up 1-0. With only 19 seconds remaining in the first, Marriott put home her own rebound to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Marriott's goal was her third of the season.
After the middle frame changed nothing, Burke again found the net, this time on a 5-on-3 as she shoveled it off Lee into the top corner to put Waterloo up 3-0.
The Lions continued to get into penalty trouble and Waterloo would make them pay once again as Ballantyne tapped in a nice pass from Marissa Redmond (Ajax) for the power play marker.
Not to be outdone Hewitt-Kenda would ice the game as Ballantyne sprung her free on a nice pass and Hewitt-Kenda put the shot through Lee to secure the 5-0 win.Â

Laurentian 4 @ Ryerson 3
TORONTO - The third period started so well for the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon, but did not end as planned.
The Laurentian Voyageurs scored a goal with under a minute and a half left to give them a 4-3 advantage and ultimately the victory.
The Rams were down 3-1 to start the third, but a Nella Brodett (Edmonton, Alta.) goal on the powerplay made it 3-2.
Just over halfway through the period, a Jessica Hartwick (Brampton, Ont.) shot from the point was deflected by Melissa Wronzberg (Thornhill, Ont.) in front and it was a tie hockey game.
Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the period but with just over a minute left, MacAuley Carr scored her first goal of the season, using a screen to beat Rams goaltender Cassandra McNichol (Toronto).Â
McNichol came in relief of Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, NS) and played almost 35 minutes, making 14 saves but was tagged with the loss. Crawley was pulled after allowing the first three Laurentian goals.Â
Laura Deller was the winning goaltender facing 36 shots to get her sixth win of the year.
The Rams now enter the holiday break with a record of 5-10 and in 11th place in the OUA.

Western 2 @ Queen’s 0
KINGSTON (December 1, 2013) - Despite outshooting the Mustangs 33-17, the No. 2 Gaels dropped sunday afternoon's matchup 2-0 on an empty net goal at the Memorial Centre.
With the game tied 0-0 after the first period, Western opened the scoring midway through the second when Stacey Scott gathered the puck behind the Gaels net, centering it to Ally Galloway, who banged it past Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.), who finished the game wiith 15 saves.Â
As time wound down and the Mustangs continued to lead, the Gaels pulled Dodd-Moher for the extra attacker.Â
Western withstood the Gaels last minute pressure, with Scott putting the game out of reach in the dying seconds with an empty-net goal to make the final 2-0 for the Mustangs.
Kelly Campbell earned the shutout win Western.

WATERLOO, Ont. (December 1, 2013) - Team Captain Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., recorded a career-high five points to lead the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team to a 6-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

The fourth year forward was simply dominant throughout the contest, scoring twice in opening five minutes and 32 seconds of the game before assisting on Lauriers final three goals. Her outstanding performance topped her previous best single game performance of four points (one goal, three assists) back in 2011-12 against the Western Mustangs and vaulted her into eighth place in league scoring with 17 points.

Her five-point night is also the first time a Golden Hawk has registered that many points in a single game since teammate Candice Styles of Orangeville, Ont., accomplished the feat back in 2010 against Waterloo.

In a matchup that was never in doubt for the Hawks from the opening faceoff, Laurier jumped on the Ridgebacks early, scoring four times in the opening 10 minutes and 22 seconds of the contest. After Brooker gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead on her own, rookie forward Jessica Prevette of Mississauga, Ont., scored a powerplay marker to chase Ridgebacks starter Tori Campbell of Lethbridge, Alta., from between the pipes.

Her replacement Cassie Charette of Ottawa, didn't fare much better as Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., scored her first of two goals on the night just a minute and a half later to give Laurier a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Just over halfway through the period, a Jessica Hartwick (Brampton, Ont.) shot from the point was deflected by Melissa Wronzberg (Thornhill, Ont.) in front and it was a tie hockey game.
Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the period but with just over a minute left, MacAuley Carr scored her first goal of the season, using a screen to beat Rams goaltender Cassandra McNichol (Toronto).Â
McNichol came in relief of Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, NS) and played almost 35 minutes, making 14 saves but was tagged with the loss. Crawley was pulled after allowing the first three Laurentian goals.Â
Laura Deller was the winning goaltender facing 36 shots to get her sixth win of the year.
The Rams now enter the holiday break with a record of 5-10 and in 11th place in the OUA.

KINGSTON (December 1, 2013) - Despite outshooting the Mustangs 33-17, the No. 2 Gaels dropped sunday afternoon's matchup 2-0 on an empty net goal at the Memorial Centre.
With the game tied 0-0 after the first period, Western opened the scoring midway through the second when Stacey Scott gathered the puck behind the Gaels net, centering it to Ally Galloway, who banged it past Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.), who finished the game wiith 15 saves.Â
As time wound down and the Mustangs continued to lead, the Gaels pulled Dodd-Moher for the extra attacker.Â
Western withstood the Gaels last minute pressure, with Scott putting the game out of reach in the dying seconds with an empty-net goal to make the final 2-0 for the Mustangs.
Kelly Campbell earned the shutout win Western.

UOIT 0 @ Laurier 6
WATERLOO, Ont. (December 1, 2013) - Team Captain Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., recorded a career-high five points to lead the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team to a 6-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

The fourth year forward was simply dominant throughout the contest, scoring twice in opening five minutes and 32 seconds of the game before assisting on Lauriers final three goals. Her outstanding performance topped her previous best single game performance of four points (one goal, three assists) back in 2011-12 against the Western Mustangs and vaulted her into eighth place in league scoring with 17 points.

Her five-point night is also the first time a Golden Hawk has registered that many points in a single game since teammate Candice Styles of Orangeville, Ont., accomplished the feat back in 2010 against Waterloo.

In a matchup that was never in doubt for the Hawks from the opening faceoff, Laurier jumped on the Ridgebacks early, scoring four times in the opening 10 minutes and 22 seconds of the contest. After Brooker gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead on her own, rookie forward Jessica Prevette of Mississauga, Ont., scored a powerplay marker to chase Ridgebacks starter Tori Campbell of Lethbridge, Alta., from between the pipes.

Her replacement Cassie Charette of Ottawa, didn't fare much better as Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., scored her first of two goals on the night just a minute and a half later to give Laurier a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Hawks continued to dominate UOIT for the remaining 40 minutes, as Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., and Hurrell rounded out the scoring in a game that saw the purple and gold outshoot the Ridgebacks 49-24.

Getting the win and the shutout in goal for Laurier was Kayla Brown of Lively, Ont. Her 24-save effort was good enough for her fifth win of the season and fourth career shutout.

Outside of Brooker, three other Hawks recorded multiple point games including Hurrell who finished with two goals and an assist. Linemate Heather Platt of Mississauga, Ont., along with Styles each picked up two assists on the night.

With the victory, Laurier vaults over the No. 3 Queen's Gaels, who lost on Sunday to Western, to claim first place in the OUA heading into the holiday break. The Hawks now own a 13-2-0 record, good for 26 points, one more than the Gaels (11-2-3).
