WOMEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Golden Hawks slip past Gaels with shootout win
Queen's 2 @ Laurier 3 (SO)
WATERLOO, Ont. (Nov. 3, 2013) - Overtime was not enough to settle a game between the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team and the No. 3 Queen's Gaels Sunday afternoon, but the Hawks managed to pick up the extra point with the shootout win to take the game 3-2.
The first period belonged to the Hawks who outshot the Gaels 8-1 with Whitby, Ont., native Devon Skeats potting an unassisted goal only 58 seconds in.
The purple and gold wouldn't be able to maintain their dominance through the rest of the game with the Gaels managing to outshoot them 23-13 in the final two periods. Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., and Shawna Griffin of Redwood Meadows, Alt., managed to each convert one of the 23 shots into a goal for the Gaels.
Getting the equalizer to send the game into overtime was rookie Montana Merante of Orangeville, Ont. The goal was Merante's first in the OUA, and fellow rookie Heather Platt of Mississauga, Ont., earned a helper on the play.
After an overtime period was unable to solve anything the game was sent to a shootout. Golden Hawk keeper Amanda Smith of Burlington, Ont., kicked out shots from four Queen's shooters to pave the way for North Bay, Ont., native Robyn Degagne to put the game away.
The Hawks will look to gain momentum from the win as they prepare for a run of four away games before returning to the Sun Life Financial Arena. The road trip begins Saturday when the Hawks head to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Lady Vees. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. at the Countryside Arena.

York 0 @ Guelph 1
Guelph, Ont. – Christine Grant scored the only goal in the shootout following a scoreless game as the Guelph Gryphons earned a 1-0 win over the York Lions Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphons move to 7-2-0 on the season while the Lions are 3-4-1.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," said Gryphon head coach Rachel Flanagan. "Megan Lee played an excellence game, turned aside all of our attempts. Once again Steph Nehring came up big when we needed her to, giving us an opportunity to win in it a shootout."
Stephanie Nehring made 16 saves in the win while Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) turned aside an impressive 38 shots.
Guelph took possession of the puck quickly against York, almost immediately down in their territory. The Gryphons set up their game early, looking for a scoring opportunity. When the Lions were able to take control of the puck, they found themselves turning it over to a persistent Guelph team. York showed lots of speed through the neutral zone toward the net, but would miss their opportunity to shoot, as they were unable to beat the Gryphons defenders. A penalty for York player Megan Finlay (Hamilton, Ont.) for holding at 3:05 would result in Guelph's first power play. The Gryphons were able to set up a few scoring opportunities, but York was able to kill the penalty. It would be Kaitlyn Mora who would come closest to a goal, charging in from the blue line, but York goalie Megan Lee would snatch it out of the air to freeze the puck.
York upped the intensity, finding more ways through the Gryphon defense but ultimately the first period would end scoreless with the Lions going into the second period on a power play after a roughing penalty for Gryphon player Jessica Pinkerton in the last few seconds of the first period.
The Gryphons started the second period unaffected by the York power play, once again taking control of the game. Kelly Gribbons had a breakaway early on in the period, which then led to a scrum in front of the net with the Lions goalie ending it by smothering the puck. The Gryphons were aggressively fighting for shots on goal, upping their total by 11 before the period hit the halfway mark. York player, Tonisha Maisonneuve (North Bay, Ont.) was called for hooking at 6:27, which put the Gryphons on the power play. The York defensemen were able to effectively box out Guelph, making it hard to set anything up in front of the net. Kimberley Wong was able to find Gribbons, who tried to tip the puck in during the power play, but they were not able to beat Lee.
The goalies for both teams were doing well to keep out the onslaught of shots in both periods, with Megan Lee blocking a total of 22 shots at the end of the second period, and Stephanie Nehring with a total of six.
Guelph started the third period on a power play after a five-minute penalty on York player Renata Bastos (Auckland, New Zealand) for tripping, which also included a game misconduct. Back and forth action had both teams in a position to score, but the Lions weren't able to set up in front of the Gryphon net, and Guelph was unable to get past Lee. The third period ended scoreless, and the game went into overtime. However, neither team could overcome the goalies in the overtime period and it would be shoot outs to end the game.
Guelph's Christine Grant would score the winning goal in the shoot out against Megan Lee, to make it 1-0 for Guelph. The Gryphons out shot the Lions with a count of 38-16.
The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team hits the ice again on November 9th at the Gryphon Centre against the Windsor Lancers, with the puck set to drop at 2:00 p.m.

The Gaels dominated from the opening face-off with Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) scoring in the second minute of play off an assist from Shawn Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) and Courtenay Jacklin (Regina).
The women continued their offensive pressure with McKellar scoring her second goal of the game only four minutes later, with a little help from Danelle Bishoff (Calgary). Queen's was relentless in the second period tallying another two goals, one by Griffin on a powerplay and another by Megan Farrell (Barrie, Ont.) off an assist from Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.).
The Gaels led 4-0 heading into the third period where Waterloo's Kaitlyn McDonell gave her team their first goal of the game to break up a Gaels shutout. Less than a minute later, Griffin assisted Jacklin with her first goal of the game, and the Gaels fifth.
Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) was in net for the sixty minutes of action and had a total of 30 saves on the afternoon.

The Lancers opened the scoring 7:22 into the game as fourth-year forward Jenny MacKnight (Regina) buried a Kayla Dodson (Windsor) point shot rebound on the powerplay.

Western 0 @ Ryerson 1
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams showed on Saturday afternoon that they cannot only compete with the top teams in the country, they can beat them too.
A first period goal from Clare Sabine (London, Ont.), unassisted, was the only goal Ryerson (3-5) needed to defeat the number six nationally ranked Western Mustangs, 1-0.
Goaltending has been the story for the last number of games for Ryerson and it was once again at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, Saturday. Ryerson turned to Alex Armstrong (Toronto) who was making her first appearance in net since Oct. 5, and was dynamite, making 25 saves for her first ever OUA shutout. Armstrong was especially solid in the final five minutes of the third period, stopping numerous Western shots as they desperately tried to even the game. The Mustangs (6-3) fired 14 shots on Armstrong in the third period but couldn't solve her.
Olivia Ross started in goal for Western making her third start of the season. She made 26 saves in the loss.
Both teams went scoreless on four powerplay opportunities.

UOIT 1 @ Guelph 3
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks with a final score of 3-1 Friday night at the Gryphon Centre for their third win in a row. The Gryphons record moves to 6-2-0 on the year while the Ridgebacks drop to 5-4-0.
The Ridgebacks took possession of the puck quickly in the first half, taking advantage of a Gryphon team who seemed to have a hard time setting up. Although UOIT had more possession of the puck, the Gryphons were outshooting the Ridgebacks early on in the period. Michelle Sabourin (Pickering, Ont.) tried to set something up, chipping the puck over a UOIT defender to teammate Marcie Landman (Alma, Ont.) but she was not able to beat UOIT goalie Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.). The first Gryphon goal came in at 5:23 with a pass from Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) getting knocked away by a Ridgeback defender, straight to Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) who tipped it in behind the goalie to make it 1-0, with Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont.) also on the assist.
The Ridgebacks took back possession of the puck again, quickly finding ways to set up a scoring opportunity. They were trying to pass across to the front of the net, but their goal would come from Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) who was waiting at the red line to slap one in after a pass from Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) to make it 1-1. Almost exactly two minutes later the Gryphons would respond with a goal from Christine Grant from the crease after a pass from Amanda Parkins at 11:59 to make it 2-1.
In the second period, the game developed into back and forth action, until Guelph upped the intensity. The Ridgebacks were able to make their way to the Gryphons net, but nothing was getting by Guelph goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) and Gryphon defenders quickly dished out the puck taking it back up to Ridgeback territory. The second period ended with no goals, but Guelph was able to outshoot the Ridgebacks 9-6.
The third period started out with UOIT taking control of the puck, but Guelph battling hard to take back possession. Brittney Crawford (Guelph, Ont.) tried to slap it in from the red line looking for the top corner, but her shot was too far right. Guelph would increase the intensity once again, with their shots on goal skyrocketing, with 10 shots in the first half of the third period and the Ridgebacks trailing with only 2.
The Gryphons made their way back onto the board after a goal by Cara Sayles (Welland, Ont.) who was waiting in the crease for the pass from Amanda Parkins and Leigh Shilton (Belleville, Ont.), making it 3-1 for Guelph. The Ridgebacks were on a power play shortly after Averi Norren (Aylmer, Ont.) was called for tripping at the 16:36 mark. The Gryphons were able to kill it off, and Toronto remained scoreless in the third period. The Ridgebacks pulled their goalie in an attempt to overtake the Gryphons, but the final score would be 3-1 for the Guelph Gryphons.
The Gryphons would outshoot the UOIT Ridgebacks with a shot count of 25-16.
The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team hit the ice again Saturday November 2nd against the York Lions at home in Guelph with the puck set to drop at 7:30.

Windsor 3 @ Ryerson 1
TORONTO - The Windsor Lancers scored a goal with under a minute left in the second period to tie the game at one and never looked back, defeating the Ryerson Rams, 3-1 on Friday night.
For the first time in almost a month, the Rams were playing on home ice at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, after a four game road trip.
Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, N.S.) was the story in goal for Ryerson, making 36 saves in the loss and kept her team close with the Lancers.
"To see Crawley stand on her head the way that she did, that’s enough motivation for our girls to get out there," said captain Nella Brodett (Edmonton, Alta.). "It’s just regrouping after the penalty kill and using that motivation that we have to go score our own goals and shots."
It was the Rams that drew first blood in the game, with Brodett driving to the net to score her first goal of the season. It was Brodett's first game back from a sprained MCL that she suffered in the season opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
"She always battles," said interim head coach Pierre Alain. "So even though she was double shifted in the first and she scored a nice goal driving to the net. That’s the way she can help this team, driving, working and she’ll have her chances to score goals."
After a second period that saw Windsor dominate the play in the Ryerson zone, they finally solved Crawley. Candice Chevalier scored her first of two goals on the evening on the powerplay to have the Lancers and Rams tied going into the third period.
"The first (goal) one I was really close to having it and I kind of want that one back. The other two I want back as well," said Crawley, who made her fifth straight start for the Rams in goal.
The third period was dominated again by Windsor, pinning Ryerson in their own end and making it hard for them to break out.
Alain emphasized that puck skills are what his team needs to improve on if they are going to do a better job of clearing the zone.
"To do breakouts, efficient breakouts, you have to move the puck quicker," said Alain. "It’s all about skating with the puck, looking up and supporting each other so we’re going to break the puck out much more quicker."

Western 1 @ Toronto 2
Second-year forward Taylor Day notched two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a dominant 2-0 win over the No. 6 Western Mustangs on Friday night (Nov. 1) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-1-1 and move into fourth place, one points behind the Queen's Gaels (5-0-2), Guelph Gryphons (6-2-0) and Mustangs (6-2-0), who are all tied for first. It was the first two-goal performance in Day's career and the second time that the Blues have defeated a nationally ranked team (Guelph, Oct. 10) this season.
Day (Ilderton, Ont.) opened the scoring 11:52 into the game as she wired the puck over Western goalie Jessica Campbell's glove. The Blues outshot the Mustangs 14-5 and led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
The Mustangs had chances to even the score on a couple of 2-on-1 opportunities early in the second period, but Blues defencemen Mary Claire Geneau and Caitlin Maikawa stood their ground to allow Kesteris the easy save.
Day added her second of the night midway through the second period. The kinesiology major received a beautiful pass from team captain Kelly O'Hanlon, split the Western defence and made no mistake, beating Campbell top glove again to give the Blues the 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs put on the pressure in the third period but numerous blocked shots and saves from Kesteris preserved the lead. Western spoiled the shut out on a 6-on-5 advantage with 24 seconds left with a goal off the stick of Stacey Scott.
Kesteris posted 24 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m. Advanced tickets are on sale here. The game will also be streamed live at GoBlues.tv.
