W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Ottawa knocks off No. 1 Queen's
September 5 – McMaster @ Waterloo
The Waterloo women's soccer team lost their third straight game to start the season dropping a 2-0 decision to the McMaster Marauders on a rare Wednesday afternoon game at Warrior Field. McMaster picked up the win in their first match of the 2012 season thanks to two second half goals.
Tara Dawdy (Burlington, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Marauders off of a beautiful corner kick by Taylor Davis (Minesing, Ont.) who bent it in perfectly into the body of Dawdy.
McMaster continued to pressure the Warriors backfield with several opportunities at goal. Waterloo's keeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener) had to be sharp to keep the deficit to one.
Emma Mangialardi (Oakville, Ont.) provided the insurance marker for McMaster with a beautiful strike from 30 feet out to secure the McMaster victory.
The winless Warriors now turn their attention to the perennial powerhouse Laurier Golden Hawks who visit Warrior Field for a Sunday afternoon game at 1pm. McMaster host the Windsor Lancers on Saturday at 1pm.

Brock @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer team was ranked No. 7 in the country after the opening weekend of the 2012 season. Laurier's play backed up their ranking as they handily defeated the visiting Brock Badgers 7-0 in their first game at home.
Laurier opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., was able to tally her third goal of the season giving the Hawks an early 1-0 edge. Brown wasn't finished as just five minutes later she scored her second goal of the game and fourth in two games when she took a pass from Kelsey Abbott of Waterloo, Ont., and beat the Brock goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 2-0.
In the 14th minute, Erin Grand of Toronto, made a great pass to Julie Maheu of Oakville, Ont., who scored her first goal of the season to give Laurier a three goal cushion. Krista Cellucci of Mississauga, Ont., followed that up by tallying her first two goals of the season before Shelby Fallis of Pickering, Ont., scored her first career OUA goal, and Laurier found themselves up 6-0 at the half.
The Hawks gave some playing time to their bench in the second half and rookie Abbey Zamec of London, Ont., took advantage. The forward, who was celebrating her 18th birthday, scored the only goal of the second 45 minutes, the first of her OUA career, to give the Hawks a 7-0 win over the Brock Badgers.
Maggie Carmichael of Orono, Ont., and Stacey Simmons of Woodstock, Ont., combined for the shutout in the victory, with each playing one half. Brock keeper Megan Beachey of Richmond Hill, Ont., was credited with the loss for the Badgers.
Laurier (2-0-1) will be back in action on Sunday when they take on their cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors, at Waterloo's North Campus field. Brock (0-1) will next play Western, also on Sunday.

Trent @ Ryerson
TORONTO - The Ryerson women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Trent Excalibur in the Rams home-opener Wednesday night at St. Michaels College.
The Excalibur [1-1-1] broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 75th minute when midfielder Danielle Curti converted off of a free kick from 25 yards.
“I think the better team deserved it,” Head Coach Kevin Souter said. “We have a bad habit right now of losing on soft goals.”
The Rams [0-3-0] dropped their third straight contest, but found the scoreboard and held a brief lead Wednesday after being shutout twice over the weekend.
After losing as a result of a free kick, Souter said that his team needed to do a better job of defending the set plays.
“You give up silly fouls here and there and you expect to at least defend them and we didn’t,” he said.
Fifth-year forward Elyse Hanec opened the scoring at the 11-minute-mark Wednesday, as she corralled her own rebound and found the back of the net. Hanec’s initial ball, a high cross from near the goal line, eluded the Trent keeper, who appeared to have trouble tracking it in the evening sky. The goal was the first tally of the Rams 2012-13 season.
Hanec said she was just trying to put pressure on the keeper as well as follow up on her chance. She was the most effective Ram on the pitch, and accounted for a majority of the team’s chances.
“Elyse is a passionate player,” Souter said. “When she got the ball, things seemed to happen.”
The Excalibur evened the score midway through the half, as Carly Dunwoody directed a header past Katrina Persson-Thomas in the 28th minute. The momentum swung back and forth, but the Rams were unable to convert their opportunities.
“In the last 30 we felt like we could win it,” third-year forward Shannon Cosgrove said. “It just got away from us.”
While the Rams played their official home opener Wednesday, the team returns to Allan Lamport Stadium Saturday afternoon to host the Queens Gaels. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.

Ottawa @ Queen’s
The University of Ottawa women’s soccer team recorded an important victory over the defending national champions from Queen’s by a score of 3-0, Wednesday night in Kingston. Goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc recorded the team’s third straight shutout as the Gee-Gees have yet to allow a goal this season.
uOttawa held a 1-0 lead following the first half of play thanks to a goal by Julia Francki (Ottawa, Ont.) at the forty minute mark. Her rocket shot found the back of the net following a Queen’s turnover caused by combined high pressure from Ottawa.
Francki struck again with an insurance goal only twelve minutes into the second half on a long range shot which was set up well by the midfielders. The final marker was headed in by defender Chelsea Lanos on a corner kick play at sixty-eight minutes, giving her defensive unit a comfortable lead.
“It was a terrific performance from everyone on the field tonight,” said head coach Steve Johnson. “We showed a lot of offence and created a lot of shooting opportunities. I think the team understands the importance of how well they played.”
The victory pushes the Gee-Gees to a 3-0-0 record on the season, while Queen’s falls to 1-1-0. The three goal spread also puts the Gee-Gees in favourable position should any tie-breaker be required at the end of the regular season.
The Gee-Gees, who were ranked third in the nation in the first poll of the season, will return home for a pair of weekend games against the Nipissing Lakers and the Laurentian Voyageurs this Saturday and Sunday. Nipissing will come into the match with a 0-1-1 record while Laurentian claims a 2-0-0 record with wins over Nipissing and Trent to begin their season. Both games will begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted on SSN Canada
