W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: York and McMaster play to scoreless draw
September 12 – York @ McMaster
The York University Lions women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the host McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont., on Wednesday (Sept. 12), continuing its defensively perfect season and staying undefeated through four games.
The Lions remain the only team in the OUA West Division that has yet to allow a goal this season as fourth-year goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., has recorded four straight cleansheets.
The first half of the game was typical of the defensive style common to the Lions as no goals were allowed on either side despite strong offensive efforts. Rita Keimakh of Maple, Ont., demonstrated her usual affinity for taking strong, difficult shots on opponents' netminders.
The Lions' streak of blanking its opponents was nearly jeopardized by a strike from Marauder Stephanie Davis of Mississauga, Ont., but her shot hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Colleen Beesley of Richmond Hill, Ont., had two strong chances in the second half but was ultimately unable to beat McMastser goalkeeper Brittany Duffey of Markham, Ont. Her best opportunity came in the 84th minute when she went in on a breakaway but was denied on a brilliant save by Duffey to preserve the shutout. Beesley finished with a team-high three shots on net.
The draw brings the Lions' record to 1-0-3 on the year and they are just one point behind the Marauders, who now boast a 2-1-1 record.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 15) in St. Catharines, Ont., against the Brock Badgers at 1pm. Their next home game is against the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 1pm at York Stadium.
