W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: UOIT scares No. 4 Laurier
September 21 – McMaster @ Brock
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team (1-4 OUA West) hosted the McMaster Marauders (3-0-3 OUA) Friday afternoon, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-0 score. This is the third straight loss for the Badgers.
McMaster came out strong in the beginning of the first half, testing Brock starting goalkeeper Megan Beachey with numerous shots from outside the box, but she stood her ground and made some impressive saves.
Miscommunication and a bad giveaway in the 40th minute by the Badgers, allowed the Marauders Tara Dawdy to open the scoring with an easy finish for her first goal of the game.
The Badgers were refreshed and motivated in the second half trying to even up the score. They had a glorious opportunity in the 47th minute when Meaghan Krawczyk just missed wide right of the net on a breakaway.
Moments later however, McMaster regained control of the game when Dawdy scored her second goal of the game with a low strike just out of the reach of Beachey.
Brock tried to battle back with shots from Sara Vitaterna and Lindsay Mcdonald, but in the end Dawdy was too much for the Badgers, scoring her 3rd goal of the game in the 77th minute and achieving her first career OUA hat trick.

York @ Western
It’s onward and upward for the Women’s Mustangs women's soccer team who drew 0-0 against the York Lions. The game sets their season record to 4-2-2 so far.
In the first few minutes plays were slightly unsure, but this was attributed to the uprooting from the stadium and their consequent play on the Huron flats last week. Western applied pressure in the first ten minutes with a charge led by a combination of Lauren Winquist and Hannah Kennedy. The two worked together to try and get a touch on the net.
York Lions unlisted player number ten took some risky attempts on Mustang keeper Tori Edgar including long shots, and the application of close pressure. York’s Gina Kripotos rushed Edgar at the thirty-yard mark, but Edgar came out victorious with skillful netminding.
At 12 minutes in, York player Nour Ghoneim took a shot on a wide-open net and missed. From 20 minutes onward, York dominated the play with attempt after attempt on goal.
Western’s Sabrina DeNard demonstrated consistency as she took kick after kick toward the York half. DeNard’s first direct kick just grazed the topside of the crossbar and her second kick was answered by York Goalie, Samira Sarvian-Somer.
York began to pick up steam in the last ten minutes and Lion Adeife Adekusibe hit the ball with her hand and play was reversed with a kick in favor of Western.
Western rookie Lauren Winquist assisted a solid attempt by Adrianna Giuffre, however, the ball was deflected off the back of a York player.
York’s Adekusibe had an onside attempt in the eighteen-yard box and with plenty of time she didn't see a pass to a wide-open teammate, and missed with her own shot on goal.
Edgar demonstrated that she isn’t fearful of a challenge as time after time she challenged for the ball, beating York forwards, which proved her foot skills to be equally matched to the other players.
At the end of the first half Western and York were drawn at 0-0.
Western’s most impressive showing of the game happened at 54 minutes, where Winquist embarked on a breakaway, but was taken down by York’s defense leaving Jaynie Van De Walle to pick up the pieces and conjure a shot on net.
The Western Mustangs dominated the second half of gameplay. Sabrina DeNard stood out by taking numerous free kicks into the eighteen-yard box. At 56 minutes, she sent an incredible ball into the eighteen, but no one was there to answer for a goal. DeNard acquired another opportunity, but the result was a corner kick. Jessica Couto took the kick, but she didn’t quite get enough lift on the ball and it came up short.
York tried to come back and Adekusibe tried to get a touch on the ball after a cross from a Lions teammate, but her aim was ill directed.
The last five minutes was a full on battle for possession, which included Western playing an impressive game of keep away from York, but it didn’t result in any goals. Lions and Mustangs drew 0-0.

September 22 – Nipissing @ Queen’s
KINGSTON, Ont. - The No. 6 Queen's Gaels defeated the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon, 8-1, in a one-sided, rain-soaked OUA women's soccer match on West Campus Field.
Jackie Tessier of Winnipeg set the tone for the Gaels in the seventh minute, as she tapped in her first goal of the match, assisted by Breanne Burton of Ottawa. Her second goal came in the 30th minute as she shot a bullet past Kelly Van Boxmeer, the Nipissing goalkeeper from Collingwood, Ont. The Gaels entered half with a 2-1 lead over the Lakers.
Queen's took control and dominated the second half. Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C. opened the scoring in the 50th minute and added another in the 61st minute. Three minutes later, Tessier put in another to complete her hat trick. The Gaels did not let up, as Breanna Burton scored a pair, in the 66th and 81st minutes. Kayla Crnic of Milton Ont. slid one past the goalkeeper with a couple minutes remaining to close out the scoring. Sabrina Carew of Thunder Bay, Ont. gave another strong performance for the Gaels in net, making two saves to pick up the win..
Braelyn MacMaster of Alexandria scored the lone goal for the Lakers, a first-half marker.

Laurier @ UOIT
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women’s soccer team earned a point against the nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks at the Ridgebacks homecoming game on Saturday afternoon.
The tie marks the Ridgebacks first points against a nationally ranked opponent, as the Golden Hawks entered the game with a
5-0-1 record outscoring their opponents 18-4.
The Ridgebacks held a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but the Golden Hawks proved why they are the top team in the OUA western conference as they stormed back with three goals of their own to tie the game.
UOIT held a 1-0 lead going into halftime, as Sonia Sampogna scored at the 41st minute beating Laurier goalkeeper Maggie Carmichael.
Katie Watts made it 2-0 for the Ridgebacks five minutes in the second half, as she scored her second goal of the year.
It looked as if the Ridgebacks were going to pull off the upset in the 73rd minute, when Sierra Bulger streaked in on a breakaway and scored to put the Ridgebacks up 3-0.
Laurier somehow found an extra gear late in the game and scored three goals over the next 15 minutes to tie the game.
CIS Athlete of the Week Emily Brown scored at the 77th minute, followed by Krista Cellucci scoring on a penalty shot at the eight minutes later. Sarah Faranotied the game with a long shot that found the top corner, beating UOIT goalkeeper Melissa Linton.

Brock @ Waterloo
The Warriors picked up their first win of the season blanking the Brock Badgers 2-0 at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon. Waterloo scored two late markers to earn the shutout victory and improve to 1-5-1 on the season while Brock dropped to 1-5-0.
Fourth year striker Kaitlyn Barnett (Kitchener, Ont.) put Waterloo ahead 1-0 in the 75th minute with her first goal of the season. Barnett had several quality chances throughout the match including a point blank chance on Badgers goalie Luciana Di Paolo (Newmarket, Ont.) in the opening minutes of the game.
Following the Barnett goal, Brock would put all sorts of pressure on Waterloo's backfield but keeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener, Ont.) was solid in net for Waterloo making several key saves to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Waterloo would add an insurance marker in the 90th minute as Kristina Stojadinovic (Caledon, Ont.) booted home an incredible free kick past Di Paolo from 30 feet out.
Bandura did the rest for Waterloo making nine saves in the win. Di Paolo was less busy facing only four shots on net in the match.

Guelph @ Windsor
The Gryphon women’s soccer squad shutout the Lancers 2-0, under soggy skies Saturday at Alumni Field in Windsor.
The win advances the Gryphons to 3-1-2 in OUA West standings and drops the Lances to 0-5-2.
Both teams struggled with the wet field in the first half, but play was evenly matched. The Gryphons opened the scoring in the 29th minute, with a goal from Alexandra Harriss (Dundas, ON).
The first half of the match ended in Guelph’s favour; the Lancers tried to fight back unable to convert many close encounters at the net.
At the 49th minute of the second half, rookie striker Kaitlin Mulholland (Burlington, ON) added the Gryphons' insurance goal, putting the girls up 2-0. As the sun started to peek through the clouds, the game once again became evenly matched and the Lancers started to show a presence on Guelph’s side of the field. However, with no one able to score for the Lancers the game ended with a final score of 2-0 for the Gryphons.

September 23 – Nipissing @ RMC
The RMC Paladins earned their second consecutive win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Nipissing Lakers by a score of 3-0.
The win comes one day after a 1-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees. Michelle Hamilton tallied the lone goal for RMC on Saturday.
On Sunday, RMC nearly took the lead three minutes in as rookie Mireille Musca got in alone against Nipissing goalkeeper Kelly Dunk, but the Lakers keeper made an excellent one-handed save. Musca would score in the 8th minute on her next chance, just lifting a bouncing ball over Dunk as she tried to get to the ball first. The Paladins took 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Paladins extended their lead as Emma Perry broke down the right flank and cut the ball back for Hamilton, who placed her shot past a diving keeper in the 58th minute to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
Late in the match, Hamilton would score her second of the match, and fifth goal of the season, as rookie Alex Childs played Hamilton behind the Lakers back four. Although Dunk had stopped several one-on-one chances throughout the match, Hamilton’s shot was too smartly placed for the Lakers keeper to stop.
A 3-0 victory put RMC on 9 points at the halfway point of the season, as they are set to travel to Ottawa to face the nationally ranked Gee-Gees on Wednesday evening.
Laurentian @ Queen’s
A pair of goals by Breanna Burton led the Queen's Gaels to a 4-1 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees in OUA women's soccer action at the West Campus Field, Saturday.
The Gaels got off to a flying start, as Jackie Tessier fired a shot off the crossbar minutes into the game. After that early attempt, Burton found the net in the sixth minute, putting Queen's up 1-0. Burton scored again in the 15th minute to double the Gaels' lead. Julie Lopez replied for the Lady Vees in the 27th minute, giving the Gaels a 2-1 halftime lead.
The Gaels' run continued in the second half, as Brittany Almeida scored in the 53rd minute, off a Laurentian defender. Tessier closed out the scoring in the 71st minute. The Gaels played with great communication and aggressive offense, notably along the right side of the field. Striker Jenn Siu set up several plays and assisted Tessier's game-ending marker.
Madison Tyrell made six saves for the Gaels to pick up the win in goal, while Richele Greenwood made six saves in a losing cause for the Lady Vees. Amy-Lynn Pitton was named Laurentian's team MVP for her defending efforts that kept the game close in the first half.
The Gaels (5-1-2) return to action on Wednesday afternoon, as they visit the Carleton Ravens. Kickoff in Ottawa is set for 4 p.m.

Toronto @ Ryerson
The Ryerson women's soccer team let a 2-1 game slip away to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on a wet Sunday afternoon at Birchmount Stadium.
The Rams [1-6-1] battled their downtown rivals hard for 90 minutes, but could not overcome the 2-1 deficit established at the half.
"We have to work on capitalizing on our chances," midfielder Emma Ewing-Nagy said. "I think we're doing a good job of getting the ball up the field, we're just missing those final shots and just that last bit of intensity to get the ball in the net."
Rookie goalkeeper Bronwyn Clarke entered the game at the half in the midst of a brief, but pounding rainstorm. Despite the less than ideal conditions, Clarke looked poised in the box and was a stable, steady presence for the Rams.
"She made such an impact," Ewing-Nagy said. "She was loud, vocal ... she just made such a statement when she got in the net."
Clarke, who joined the team after the preseason, was making her OUA debut against Ryerson's biggest rival.
"It was a good opportunity to give her some time today and she stepped up," head coach Kevin Souter said. "She kept a clean sheet in the second half and instilled us with some confidence."
There was some early drama when starting keeper Katrina Persson-Thomas was issued a yellow card after a collision in the box during the 21st minute. The official called for a penalty kick, which resulted in Toronto's Diana Esteireiro netting the game’s first goal.
The Rams answered back in the 35th minute, when Erica Huculak blasted a long strike high over the Toronto keeper and under the crossbar.
The 1-1 score lasted for 13 minutes before Blues striker Jessica Fantozzi netted the game-winner. The sides played to a scoreless second half.
"I think our general level of play has improved this year," Souter said. "But we lack the cutting edge going forward and we're giving up these silly goals that are hampering us."
The Rams have a tough weekend ahead of them as they host Carleton University on Saturday at Allan Lamport Stadium and undefeated University of Ottawa on Sunday at Birchmount.

McMaster @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. - Sitting atop the OUA Western standings after a Saturday draw, the Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer team looked to fend off the McMaster Marauders at home. In a closely defended match, the Golden Hawks were able to score late in the game to give them their sixth victory of the season.
In a scoreless first half the Hawks did appear to have a goal, but the play was ruled offside. Laurier poured nine shots on the McMaster goaltender, but they were kept off the score sheet until the 75th minute. Rookie midfielder Shelby Fallis of Pickering, Ont. was able to score her third goal of the season, giving the Hawks the single goal they needed.
Margaret Carmichael of Orono, Ont. made three stops in the game for her third shutout of the season.
Laurier now sits six points clear of second place in the OUA West, outscoring their opponents 22-7 over their first eight games. The Golden Hawks are now exactly half-way through their 16 game schedule and are ranked No. 4 in the country.
The Hawks (6-0-2) will open up the second half of the season at home when they host the Waterloo Warriors (2-5-1) at 1 p.m. on September 28th.

UOIT @ Waterloo
The Warriors earned their second straight victory on home turf as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field. The win propels the Warriors to within one point of the Ridgebacks for the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA west with a 2-5-1 record. UOIT drops to 2-4-2 with the loss.
Not much separated the two combatants with seven shots a piece and possession time almost at dead even.
UOIT opened the scoring in the 29th minute as Katie Watts of Pickering, Ont. fired one past Waterloo keeper Lesia Bandura (Kitchener). The goal allowed was only the second by Bandura in the last four games played.
Down 1-0 heading into the second half, the home side would turn-up their offensive pressure and were rewarded with a goal by Kaitlyn Barnett (Kitchener), her second in as many games. Barnett has been a consistent offensive force for Waterloo all season and was finally rewarded with her first two goals on the weekend.
The momentum would continue to shift back and forth for the remainder of the half before rookie midfielder Krystina Wilton (Waterloo) would tally her first goal as a Warrior in the 89th minute to give Waterloo the 2-1 victory.
Bandura stopped six of seven shots faced in the win.
Waterloo will continue their playoff push next weekend with a tough match against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday followed by a rematch with the Ridgebacks on Saturday. Both games on the road are scheduled for 1pm.

Guelph @ Western
The Western Mustangs women's soccer team faced off against the Guelph Gryphons Sunday and came away victorious, 1-0.
At 16 minutes Sabrina DeNard challenged Guelph player Jennifer Dunn to a tackle, but was beaten which is rare for DeNard. Guelph forward Jennifer Dunn carried the ball on a slight breakaway and instead of taking a shot tried to cross to teammate Erica Bain, but Bain was unable to get to the ball before it went out.
Guelph created some opportunities for themselves and managed to fire off a few shots. However, this awarded Western keeper Keltie Brigham the opportunity to show off her dives and catches, the crowd saying “ooh” and “aah” as she singlehandedly wrangled the Gryphons.
At 35 minutes Guelph player Jennifer Dunn carried the ball up the right wing, crossed to the center, but Western keeper Brigham got to the ball before Guelph had any chance to score.
Just before the end of the first half, Western’s Jessica Couto took a corner kick, sending a high, lobbing ball into the center of the eighteen-yard box. Western’s Anna Keller was able to get a touch and score Western’s only goal of the game. The first half ended and Western led 1-0.
The second half had more good balls out of play than Bingo at a senior’s center. There were several impressive passes, a few great runs, but overall no one was able to get anywhere constructive. Turn after turn, ball after ball, challenge after challenge, the teams looked as though they were running keep away drills in a much larger eighteen yard box than usual, kicking the ball out when feeling pressured.
Much credence should be leant to Western player Jessica Trejo. Trejo’s throw-ins covered great distance and from the thirty-yard line she would seemingly able to hike the ball into the goalie box.
The score from the first half carried through and Western took the victory 1-0.
Next week the Women’s team will play the Brock Badgers at Western’s TD Waterhouse Stadium at 6pm on Wednesday September 26th.

York @ Windsor
The York University Lions women's soccer team continued its undefeated season on Sunday (Sept. 23) in Windsor, Ont., earning a 3-1 victory over the winless Windsor Lancers.
The Lions' found the board first, scoring in the 26th minute off a goal by second-year midfielder Shannon Wood of Brampton, Ont. In the 41st minute, Navneet Aujla, also of Brampton, extended the Lions' lead to 2-0, which they held at the half.
The Lancers managed to make a game of it, with Gadeer Sobh of Windsor, Ont., beating all-star Lions keeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, drawing the Lancers within one with just over 15 minutes of regulation time remaining.
York would add another goal to their total late in the game, as Colleen Beesley of Richmond Hill, Ont., beat Lancers goalkeeper Tara Bernard-Rae of Mississauga, Ont., in the 90th minute, bringing the final score of the game to 3-1 in favour of the Lions.
The win is a critical one for the Lions, whose difficulties producing consistent offence have hampered their ability to collect wins. Despite that, they remain undefeated on the year with a 3-0-5 record for 14 points, which puts them in a three-way tie with Western and McMaster for second place in the OUA West Division. The only other undefeated team in the West is the first-place Laurier Golden Hawks.
The Lions will be back home again next weekend for a pair of games at York Stadium against the same opponents as this weekend. They will take on the Western Mustangs on Saturday (Sept. 29) and the Windsor Lancers on Sunday (Sept. 30). Kick-off in both games is set for 1pm.

Ottawa @ Trent
At the halfway mark of the 2012 season, the Gee-Gees women’s soccer team extended their undefeated streak to eight games (7-0-1 OUA) after defeating the Trent Excalibur 6-0 at the Justin Chiu Stadium in what was their first match-up of the season.
Once again, the Gee-Gees put on a strong offensive show, generating 26 shots on goal to Trent’s six. Highlighting the Gee-Gees offensive push was second-year striker Pilar Khoury who scored an outstanding count of four consecutive goals. “It was a special day for Pilar,” noted assistant coach Stuart Barbour. “She certainly lived up to her nickname ‘Ice’ today... She is always calm and never looks frazzled.”
Third-year striker Elisabeth Wong kick-started her team’s scoring by finding the back of the net in the fourteenth minute of play, while fifth-year veteran Tessa Dimitrakopoulos topped things off with a successful penalty kick in extra minutes to garner a 6-0 win.
On the defensive side, the Gee-Gees were equally sound, keeping the Excalibur out of their zone for the majority of the game. Both second-year goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc and first-year Alexandra Girouard contributed to the shut-out, as the Gee-Gees continue to maintain a clean tally of zero goals against so far this season.
“The team takes a lot of pride in their defensive record right now,” admitted Barbour. “We put on a good performance today and a lot of players were involved in the game.”
The Gee-Gees, who were ranked No. 2 in the nation for a second time this week, will return home to host RMC this Wednesday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. at Matt Anthony Field. The garnet and grey will then head south for the weekend, taking on Toronto on Saturday, September 29, and Ryerson on Sunday, September 30. Both game times are set for 1:00 p.m.
