CIS: Brown named female athlete of the week
Brown, a second-year business student from Waterloo, Ont., scored five of her team’s six goals last weekend, including both game winners, as the fourth-ranked Golden Hawks (5-0-1) remained undefeated in conference play with road wins against Western, 2-1, and Windsor, 4-1. The 5-foot-8 forward did all the scoring for Laurier in Saturday’s victory over Western, netting the difference maker in the 65th minute, and was even more productive on Sunday against Windsor when she registered a hat trick. The 2011 OUA West rookie of the year has an OUA-leading nine goals in six contests this fall.
UPEI soccer player Chanelle Roy, Concordia rugby player Erika Ikonomopoulos and Regina soccer player Meagan Cormier were also nominated for the women’s award.
Visintin, a fifth-year student from Vancouver, was instrumental in keeping the No. 3-ranked Thunderbirds (4-0-0) undefeated this past weekend. On Friday, the 6-foot-1 midfielder scored the game-tying and game-winning goals – both on penalty kicks - to lead UBC to a 4-2 come-from-behind win at Fraser Valley. The following night, he was named UBC’s game MVP as the ‘Birds blanked reigning CIS champion and then-No. 1 Victoria 1-0.
