W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Ottawa defeats crosstown rivals, sits atop standings
Ryerson @ Nipissing
The Nipissing Lady Lakers found themselves down two goals with only fifteen minutes remaining in the game however second year striker Erica Dixon (Ottawa, ON) found the mesh twice in a nine minute span allowing the Lakers to salvage an important point in a 2-2 draw against the visiting Ryerson Rams.
The Lakers got off to a strong start and created some nice chances early in the first half however as the half wore on the Rams gained some momentum off of a few defensive miscues by the home team. The Rams managed to penetrate the Lakers defence several times however Lakers keeper Kelly Dunk was a force stopping multiple opportunities.
The Rams would score first as Arianne Authier-Henry and Dunk raced to a ball in the 18 yard box. It appeared that Dunk had control of the ball however contact with Authier-Henry resulted in a loose ball that she was able to then collect and put in an empty net. The first half ended with Ryerson up 1-0.
The Rams Authier-Henry added her second goal of the game in the 72 minute when she was set free off of a quick counter attack.
Dunk took the Lakers on her shoulders from this point on as the team pressed for some offence while she made one spectacular save after another.
The Lakers fortunes finally changed in the 76th minute when Dixon made a nice run down the left flank and was able to beat the Rams keeper. With time winding down the Lakers completed the comeback when Dixon shook off her defender and beat her in a race for a loose ball tucking a nice low shoot past the keeper to even the contest.
The draw now moves the Lakers to 0-3-2 on the season while Ryerson sits at 1-4-1, two points ahead of the Lakers however the Rams have played one more game.
The Lady Lakers will be back on the field tomorrow at noon against Toronto.

Toronto @ Laurentian
SUDBURY, ON The Lady Vees have had one of their best starts to a season in recent years, and looked to continue their early success against the Varsity Blues this afternoon. The match was back and forth throughout but Laurentian lacked that offensive spark with 5th year striker Lisa Watson (Newmarket, ON) sidelined with an injury. Toronto however were able to capitalize up front with two goals from their strikers, putting away the Lady Vees, handing them their first defeat of the season.
The start of the game did not provide much in regards to scoring opportunities. The play consisted mostly of erred passes and a few crosses that were unable to find the heads of the oncoming strikers. The 20th minute however would result in the first of two Toronto goals. A looping cross was sent into the box from the wing and what looked to be an easy catch for the keeper was misplayed, going over her head and right onto the Toronto strikers foot for an easy goal. From then on the balance of play shifted towards Toronto, controlling the majority of play down the wings. Laurentian did generate a few good breaks, most notably when Amy-Lynn Pitton (Brampton, ON) was allowed to turn in the box, unfortunately the ball was in a poor position and her shot sailed high.
Down a goal heading into the second half the Lady Vees were determined to produce better play. Immediately you could see the intensity increase as the Lady Vees did not want to drop their first game of the year. The solid play was not sustained however, as Toronto began to take over and control the game as they did for much of the first half. In the 66th minute LaShaunna Harper (Toronto, ON) used her imposing strength to break through the Laurentian defense and tuck the ball by the Laurentian keeper, adding to their one goal lead. Laurentian attempted to get back into the game but were continually stifled by the Toronto defense, unable to really get much going offensively. As the final whistle blew, the Lady Vees suffered their first defeat of the year, 2-0.
The Lady Vees first loss of the year finds them with a 3-1-1 record on the season and look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon at 12pm against Ryerson. Continue to follow www.luvoyageurs.com to keep up to date with your Voyageurs and Lady Vees.

Queen's @ Trent
KINGSTON, Ont. - The No. 4-ranked Queen's Gaels put four balls past the home Trent Excalibur en route to their third win of the young season in OUA women's soccer action at Justin Chiu Stadium in Peterborough, Ont. on Saturday afternoon.
All four goals came in the second half for the defending national champions. Jessie De Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) got the Gaels on the board eight minutes into the second period. 12 minutes later, Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) made it a two-goal lead for the visiting team. The Gaels rounded out the scoring with two more insurance goals: one by Laura Callendar (Nepean, Ont.) in the 75th-minute and the other through a pass that scrambled across the box into the stride of Kayla Crnic (Milton, Ont.) for the one-time strike in the 90th minute to seal the victory over the home team.
Gaels goalkeeper Sabrina Carew (Thunder Bay, Ont.) grabbed the shutout in the win and the Gaels now improve to a 3-1-1 record. They return to action on Sunday as they travel back home to play the Carleton Ravens (2-2-1). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the West Campus Field.

York @ Brock
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team (1-3 OUA West) dropped their second straight falling to the visiting York Lions (2-0-3 OUA West) by the score of 5-0 Saturday afternoon at home.
Following a quick-paced start, York went ahead as early as the third minute thanks to a shot by Adeife Adekusibe that beat Brock starting goalkeeper Luciana Di Paolo (Newmarket, Ont.).
Despite both teams sharing possession until the middle of the half, it was the Lions who went two goals ahead this time after Gina Kripotos buried a low ball underneath Di Paolo. Just before the two teams were ready for the break, York answered again in the 44th minute through a curled free kick by Rita Keimakh.
The Badgers looked ready and refreshed to shorten the Lions lead and started pressuring up the field during the beginning of the second half, eventually, getting two shot via Meaghan Krawczyk (Stevensville, Ont.) and Lindsay McDonald (Burlington, Ont.).
However, it would be the away team who tucked in two goals in the 51st and 53rd minute respectively by Francesca Pedulla and Keimakh, her second of the game.
York senior goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini registered her OUA leading fifth shutout of the season turning aside all six Brock shots she faced. Di Paolo suffered her second loss of the season adding three saves on eight shots.
The Badgers next game is at home, September 21st at 1:00 pm against the McMaster Marauders.

Guelph @ McMaster
Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's soccer team tallied their second tie of the season against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.
In their second game of the week, the Marauders found themselves unable to score in the full 90 minutes. With opportunities in both halves, McMaster's front line was shut down. Despite some free kick opportunities from scoring range, the Marauders were unable to find the back of the net on a number of occassions.
On the other end of the field, McMaster's tight defence did not allow for many chances from the visitors either. Around the 70 minute mark, Marauder goalkeeper Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) made a jumping, diving save on what looked like a goal from a Guelph forward to maintain another shut out.
The game would end scoreless for both teams.
The Marauders take on the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday on the road at 1pm.

Laurier @ Western
The Women’s Mustangs Soccer team was back home Saturday and unfortunately lost to the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1.
The first half was a 0-0 draw.
The second half was jam-packed with excitement. The team looked strong and had some great opportunities, specifically, in the eighteen-yard box. There was a spectacular header to Angelika Mihalopulos, which assisted a great attempt by Lauren Winquist. Shortly thereafter, Angelika Mihalopulos took the ball up the left wing only to be fouled by an offside call.
The atmosphere was lively as the crowd anticipated the signature 1-0 finish the girls have been delivering over the past few weeks. “It’s a pretty even game so far, I think UWO had a couple of chances that could have gone in and the two players that have impressed me so far are number five (Sabrina Denard) in the back and twenty-four (Lauren Winquist) in the front” said Jurgen Klaus, father of senior player Chloe Klaus, also, sous chef for last evening's Lasagna Dinner at the Klaus residence.
Laurier forward Emily Brown scored at sixteen minutes into the second half. Shortly thereafter, Mustang goaltender Tori Edgar dove in what appeared to be an incredible save, but Suzanne Boroumand scored for Laurier off of the rebound.
Western carried the ball down the field and the team garnered a corner kick after some fancy footwork by Angelika Mihalopulos, who managed to out the ball off of Laurier. After much fussing about in the box in front of the goalie, the ball tipped off of the goalies hand and into the net for the Mustangs' first goal. The score tightened to 2-1 for Laurier.
Attempt after attempt there were some brilliant moments, most notably when Mustang Cloe Klaus had a near miss off of the crossbar. Sabrina DeNard was awarded a kick close to the end of the game, but the distance was far and the ball was swept away by the wind.
Catch the team at another home game tomorrow afternoon at 1pm when they take on Waterloo.

Ottawa @ Carleton
The streak lives on. Unfortunately for the Carleton Ravens women’s soccer team, it’s a streak they would rather forget.
The Ravens (2-2-1) were once again unable to defeat their bitter crosstown rival from the University of Ottawa (6-0-1), coming out on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line this afternoon at Ravens’ Field.
Coming into the match, Carleton had never beaten the University of Ottawa in women’s soccer action, and goals from Krista Draycott, Gillian Baggot and Maris Barnabe ensured that things stayed that way.
Draycott, a fourth-year striker who played today’s match primarily on the left-wing, got the ball rolling for the visitors in the 34th minute. After receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area following a quick free-kick, her effort took a slight deflection and looped over the head of Ravens goalkeeper Rachel Bedek.
The goal came on the back of a dominant first-half display from the second-ranked Gee-Gee’s, who dictated the flow of the opening 45 minutes with their short, quick passing and overwhelming edge in possession.
“To me we just weren’t at the races in the first-half,” Ravens head coach Alex McNutt said following the match.
Despite a better effort from the hosts after the interval, Gee-Gee’s defender Gillian Baggot put the game beyond reach in the 63rd minute. The Ottawa native capped a brilliant individual performance by getting onto the end of a free-kick and flicking what McNutt called a “tremendous” header beyond Bedek.
“I though in the second half we showed a bit more heart, pushed a bit more and actually just before they scored we were staring to create, but again another set piece,” McNutt said. “Give them credit, they’re very dangerous from set-pieces.”
Carleton was able to cause some problems for the Gee-Gee’s defence, but ultimately could not beat goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc, who is yet to allow a goal this season in over 630 minutes of action.
The visitors rubbed salt into the wounds by scoring again late in the match, this time through third-year defender Maris Barnabe, who pounced on a loose ball and slotted home a low shot following yet another free-kick.
With today’s loss, the Ravens have now compiled a record of 0-31-7 over the 18 years the teams have competed against one another.
McNutt acknowledges that the team is aware of its history against the Gee-Gee’s, but is not convinced that the streak itself had any impact on today’s performance.
“I don’t think it’s so much the streak as it is that we’re playing against a good team,” he said. “The question is are we able to really play and do something attacking wise against these top teams…I know they can do it, I’ve seen it, but we’ve got to get it fixed quickly because mentally something wasn’t quite right there in the first half.”
The Ravens will have a chance to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon against one of those top teams McNutt was referring to. The women travel to Queen’s University for what promises to be a difficult away fixture with the Gaels, who are coming into the contest as the fourth-ranked team in the nation.
The season may still be young, but with the two teams separated by only three points in the division standings, the stage is set for an exciting contest. Carleton will be looking for a reversal of last season’s result, where they were shutout by the Gaels 2-0 on their lone visit to Kingston.

Toronto @ Nipissing
?The Nipissing Lady Lakers soccer team built a 1-0 lead at half time however Toronto scored three answered goals to claim the 3-1 victory over the home team.
It was the start the Lakers were looking for as second year midfielder Stefanie Giftopoulos (Ancaster, ON) was sent in early on a through ball but was barely beat by the Toronto keeper in a race for the ball. This was a good sign for the offence as they were able to generate some chance early.
Toronto would also see their chances early as a few Toronto players were able to penetrate the Lakers defence however Lakers keeper Kelly Dunk was solid early challenging the shooters and saving some tough shots in close.
Giftopoulos would once again find herself the recipient of a through ball however this time there was no race for the ball as she found herself with time and space and made no mistake firing a low shot to left corner past the outstretched Toronto keeper.
Both teams would exchange some chances however both keepers would stand their ground as the Lakers would take a 1-0 into half.
Toronto would equal the contest early in the second half as Lashaunna Harper carried a through ball and tucked it passed a helpless Dunk. This goal seemed to turn the tide as Toronto gained some momentum and carried the play and possession for most of the second half.
Toronto would go ahead for good when a corner kick was cleared by the Lakers defence however a quick counter attack and pass found the feet of Jessica Fantozzi who made no mistake. Fantozzi would add her second goal of the game in the 92nd minute as the Lakers pressed for the equalizer and she found herself all alone off of a quick counter attack.
The Lady Lakers drop to 0-4-2 while Toronto improves to 3-1-2 on the season.
The Lakers will hit the road next weekend as the team travels to take on Queen’s and RMC.

Laurier @ Windsor
WINDSOR, Ont. (September 15th, 2012) - A day after scoring twice in a tight 2-1 win over Western on Saturday, Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., was back at it Sunday, scoring three goals for the Hawks in a 4-1 win over the Windsor Lancers.
In a game where the Golden Hawks put 24 shots on net, Laurier was able to keep their unbeaten season alive for another game. With her hat-trick, Brown now leads the OUA in scoring with nine goals.
Brown scored her first goal of the game in the 11th minute, putting the ball past Windsor goalkeeper Tae Bernard-Rae of Mississauga, Ont., to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge. However, just three minutes later the Lancers were able to level the score on Kelly Riccardi's (Tecumseh, Ont.) sixth goal of the season. Laurier was unable to gain the lead back until late in the half when Brown scored her second goal of the game, despite the fact that the Hawks directed twelve shots on net.
With the game still up for grabs going into the second half, Brown solidified the victory scoring her third of the contest in the 57th minute. Rookie Shelby Fallis of Pickering, Ont., scored her second goal of the season to round out the scoring for Laurier.
Margeret Carmichael of Orono, Ont., stopped three shots for her fourth win of the season. Windsor's Benard-Rae made an amazing twenty stops.

Carleton @ Queen's
KINGSTON Ont. (September 16, 2012) – The No. 4-ranked Queen's Gaels were held to a scoreless draw against the Carleton Ravens in OUA women's soccer action at the West Campus Field, Sunday afternoon.
The game was marked by strong defensive plays from the Gaels' fullbacks and a series of great corners throughout the match. Offensively, Queen's pressured the Carleton defence and had three of their four scoring opportunities from corner kicks in the first half. Carleton matched the Gaels' efforts, with three shots of their own taken from outside the eighteen-yard box, however the shots could not get passed the Queen's goalkeeper Madison Tyrrell.
The second half mirrored the first, with Queen's outshooting Carleton three shots to two. Overall, the Gaels outshot the Ravens seven to five, but despite the numerous attempts at goal and the tremendous efforts put forth by both teams they could not find a goal, leaving the game at 0-0 score.
Anna Morsky made seven saves for the Ravens to pick up the shutout. For the Gaels, today's game is their fifth clean sheet in six games.

Guelph @ York
The York University Lions women's soccer team was unable to defend a one-goal lead on Sunday (Sept. 16), surrendering an 88th-minute goal that snapped their five-game shutout streak and allowed the visiting Guelph Gryphons to play out to a 1-1 draw.
York goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., had been perfect in net for 538 minutes of play before the Gryphons finally broke the shutout streak. The Lions are still one of only three teams in the OUA West without a loss this season, with a 2-0-4 record.
The lengthy shutout streak came to its end when Alexandra Hariss of Dundas, Ont., knocked the ball in off of Erica Bain's corner kick.
The Lions opened the scoring early, with second-year defender Taylor Lyons of Brampton, Ont., beating the Gryphon defender with a header off of a corner kick from Rita Keimakh of Maple, Ont., in the seventh minute.
The Gryphons offence looked to regroup and respond quickly, and very nearly did off a strong, 30-yard shot from Hariss that hit the post in the 17th minute.
York's offence continued to demonstrate encouraging developments in chemistry, as Colleen Beesley and Jessica Tavernese, both of Richmond Hill, Ont., were able to weave passing plays right through the Gryphon defence for a near scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute, but just barely failed to register a shot.
The Lions defence was tested in the first half, which afforded defender and team captain Felicia Turone of Brampton, Ont., the opportunity to shine. Turone made a critical defensive tackle in the 40th minute after Natalie Schott of Toronto managed to sneak the ball into the box and into a strong scoring position.
The Lions very nearly added a second goal just at the 45-minute mark when attacker Gina Kripotos of Vancouver took advantage of a defensive error by the Gryphons to fire an exciting shot at the net, but hit the post.
The Lions managed to maintain their 1-0 lead at halftime, despite strong offensive surges from the Gryphons. Courtney Whiteside of Guelph, Ont., and the rest of the Gryphon offence threatened the Lions' season-long shutout streak, providing the toughest offensive threat the Lions' have faced this season.
The Lions nearly extended their lead again at the start of the second half as striker Adeife Adekusibe of Nobleton, Ont., missed the net by just a foot in the 46th minute, and then made a pass to set up a nearly identical strike by Keimakh that just narrowly missed on the short side.
Adekusibe nearly found the back of the net in the 61st minute after receiving the ball alone in front of the net, but Gryphon goalkeeper Alexandra King of Ottawa managed to make the catch to keep the score at 1-0.
The Gryphons almost tied it in the 66th minute off another shot from Hariss, who took a loose ball in front of the net and put a low kick towards the corner, but Fiorini leapt to make the save on the ground.
The Lions struck back with force, posting three strong scoring opportunities in the 67th and 68th minutes, including two strong 35-yard kicks from Lyons that both narrowly missed the Gryphon net. That was as close as they would get to increasing their lead to two goals before Guelph finally found the equalizer.
The Lions will be on the road next weekend against the Western University Mustangs in London, Ont., on Friday night (Sept. 21) beginning at 6:30pm, and against the Windsor Lancers on Sunday at 1pm. Their next home game is the following Saturday (Sept. 29), also against the Mustangs at 1pm.

Today the Western Mustangs took on the Waterloo Warriors and dominated in a 1-0 win. The game was full of action as hot as the twenty-three degree temperature.
Jaynie Van De Walle received a great ball and carried it down the field to the right corner. Unable to cut in, the ball went out off of the Waterloo defender and resulted in a corner kick for Western. Following, Hayley Slavin crossed a beautiful ball in front of Waterloo’s net, but the Mustangs were unable to get a touch for the finish.
A fumble in the center by Western awarded Waterloo’s Kristina Stojadinovic a breakaway, but keeper Keltie Brigham challenged and caught the ball off a bounce.
Western played against the wind in the first half. Balls in the air were unpredictable, and the players kept the ball under control by passing lower to the ground. Courtney Stocks, Jessica Couto, and Hannah Kennedy were integral in creating opportunities for Western. The Stangs applied good pressure to Waterloo, but they were working much harder than Waterloo who had the wind advantage in the first half. The score was drawn at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half got off to an exciting start. Western garnered a direct kick and Sabrina DeNard hammered a great shot only to be foiled by the keeper. Shortly thereafter, she found herself in a Waterloo sandwich on her second attempt at goal and was unable to finish the play.
Western's endurance in the second half was evident. Hannah Kennedy outran Waterloo’s defense and from the right side she just missed the far left post in what would have been a lovely ground goal. There was a nice ball into the center by Krista Lee, but Waterloo’s keeper remained solid throughout the game proving that it would take some crafty footwork to catch her off guard.
Sabrina DeNard eventually managed to find the net for Western and scored on a direct kick with a clean shot to the left corner. The score looked promising for western at 1-0. Waterloo’s Rebecca Kong tried to breakaway down the field, but was tamed by steady keeper Keltie Brigham.
Western dominated the second portion of the game and kept play in Waterloo’s half. Sabrina DeNard, Krista Lee, and Hannah Kennedy all played a superb game.
Catch the Women’s Mustangs at 6:30pm September 21st in their next home game against York.
