NO.6 MCMASTER DEFEATS NO.7 UNB IN CONSOLATION GAME
Player of the Match honours went to UNB's Erica Hay. This is the second match in a row that Hay has claimed this honour for her team. She finished with 15 kills, 13 digs, and a block. On the other side of the net, Laura Cobb received the award for her clutch performance off the bench during the third set.
In the first set McMaster proved their right to be here as they beat the home team 25-16. The set was at times close, but rarely did UNB show any signs of challenging for the set victory. Up front for McMaster Carly Welch (Hamilton, ON) had 5 kills and three defensive digs. For UNB Erica Hay (Sussex, NB) was busy as she collected 4 kills and 3 defensive digs. Errors were a big reason why UNB lost the set as they committed 9 to McMaster's 3. UNB coach John Richard was busy substituting players in the first set as nearly his entire team had at least one touch.
McMaster scored first during the second set and would go onto to take it 25-22. UNB looked much better in this set as they were able to keep the score close, including trailing only by 1 at several key stages. McMaster's Kaila Janssen (Whitby, ON) had a big second set as she found away to put the ball through UNB's defensive wall with 4 kills. Hay was once again UNB's biggest threat, something that has been constant throughout the tournament. Jenna Fox (Fredericton, NB) also helped keep UNB in the game with 5 digs giving her 8 after two sets. McMaster's Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, ON) has been nothing short of spectacular to this point in setting up scoring kill shots. After two sets she had 23 assists.
The Varsity Reds were reluctant to concede a straight set defeat going onto take set three 26-24. The set proved to be the most exciting one of the game and was filled with lead changes right until the final whistle. A dramatic kill shot by Barb Vriends (Covehead, PE) would win the set. To this point UNB has 9 team blocks compared to 6 by McMaster. The V-Reds have also committed fewer errors. To credit the Marauders they have spent slightly more time on the attack.
It was not meant to be for the home team as they lost the fourth set 25-20, eliminating them from the tournament. For UNB Heidi Mouris (Moncton, NB) played well during the fourth set attacking the ball fiercely and often. For McMaster Jansen and Welch continued their dominance on the court.
Tim Louks, head coach for the Marauders discussed after the game on what he considered the turning point of the match. It occurred in the third set, a set that even though McMaster lost was prevented from being a blow-out by a clutch Laura Cobb (Chatham, ON) who came off the bench. "We were being outplayed, UNB was scratching and clawing during every play and we had our backs against the wall. If it were not for Cobb with some clutch setting who knows what may have happened not only in the set, but the rest of the game. I cannot thank her enough." In regards to tomorrow's game, Coach Louks said he and his team are excited. "It is the first time playing Sherbrooke this year, we know that they are a tough team, but I like our chances and would like to see us improve our ranking."
