MCMASTER DEFEATED BY SHERBROOKE IN CONSOLATION FINAL AT CIS CHAMPIONSHIP
Players of the Match were Sherbrooke's Renee-Claude Chevarie. The first year player recorded 16 points, 13 kills, a service ace, 6 defensive digs, and 4 blocking assists. As for McMaster, Jackie Sauve was awarded the honours. Sauve made nine kills, 6 defensive digs, and 1.5 blocks.
In the first set Sherbrooke got on the board first with a big kill from Claudine Laguex Champgne (Saint-Georges, QC) but lost the set 25-21. With the game knotted at 13's during the second technical time-out, McMaster began to control the game with solid setting from the hands of Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, ON) and a great attack game from Jennifer Sauve (Penetangueshene, ON). While each team was responsible for making 6 errors during the first, those committed late by Sherbrooke ultimately led to their defeat.
The second set produced different results as Sherbrooke got back into the match with a 25-17 victory. Sherbrooke came out looking like a different team as they greatly improved their team attacking percentage to .263 after a dismal .091 in the first set. Sherbrooke's Sarah Schaerli (Ste-Marie-de-Blandford, QC) was clearly the busiest player of the set collecting 4 kills, a big defensive dig and an assisted block. McMaster committed a whopping 10 errors in the set, resulting in a -.022 attacking percentage.
Using the momentum from the second set, Sherbrooke went on to narrowly win the third 25-22. CIS second team all-star Marie-Christine Pruneau (Windsor, ON) stepped up her game in the set as she collected 5 more kills to give her 10 after three sets. She has also been clutch on defence thus far with 20 digs. Led by Sarah Masterton (Pickering, ON) McMaster continues to be impressive in their blocking; however, errors have continued to prevent them from transforming these into timely points.
Set four produced the most entertaining action of the match thus far. It was one in which McMaster erased an early six point lead from Sherbrooke only to lose the set and the match in the late stages 25-22. Sherbrooke's Schaerli came up with two clutch service aces in a row to give Sherbrooke the lead 17-16. After this they were able to rely on big hitting and monster blocking late in the match to solidify the win.
Both teams leave the tournament finishing on par with their pre tournament rank. The UNB Varsity Reds along with the organizing committee would like to extend our sincere thank you to both teams for their hard work and entertaining play over the course of this three day event.
