Guelph @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (September 6, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks opened up the 2012 OUA Conference schedule with an 8-5 loss to the Guelph Gryphons at Bechtel Park on Wednesday night.
Guelph jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and Laurier fought back a couple times to make the game close, but in the end, Guelph was too much for the Golden Hawks on this evening.
Brett van Pelt of Whitby, Ont., started and took the loss for Laurier as he worked 3 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 1 hit with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts. Freshman reliever Michael Asta of Toronto, and veterans Trent Barwick of Orangeville, Ont., and Andrew Ziedins of Toronto, all worked in relief.
Offensively the Golden Hawks were led by RF Brandon Manley of Peterborough, Ont., as he was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. 1B Adam Shaver of Missis sauga, Ont., and 3B Ryan Panas of Toronto, each added 2 hits and other hits went to C Riley Robinson (Mississauga, Ont.), SS Colin McKeen (Orangeville, Ont.) and 2B Trevor Nyp (Kitchener, Ont.). DH McKenzie Maxwell (Corunna, Ont.) scored 2 runs in a losing cause.
"Guelph played a solid ball game tonight," commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne. "Their starting pitcher threw a lot of strikes and we had a lot of routine fly balls and could not get into a rhythm offensively. Van Pelt struggled tonight which is very uncharacteristic for him and they took advantage of the free passes that were handed to them. We did have a couple great performances from Manley and Shaver and we will take the positives out of this one and move forward into the rest of our conference schedule."
The Golden Hawks will travel to Brantford on Thursday to take on the Ontario Blue Jays U18 team in a non-conference game a s part of Brantfords frosh week festivities. This weekend the Golden Hawks will play four conference games in Milton as part of the OUA Kick-Off Tournament.
