M-BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Brock dominant over Western in Wednesday's sole contest
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (13-2 overall, 8-1 OUA) defeated OUA divisional rival Western Mustangs by the score of 12-8 Wednesday night at George Taylor Field.
Brock scored eight runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, highlighed by a three-run homerun from senior Cameron Graham (Sarnia, Ont.).
Western answered with five in the top of the 5th making it 8-6 after five innings, but that was as close as they would come as Brock improved their OUA record to 8-1.
Leading the Badgers 16-hit attack was Evan Baglieri (Chippawa, Ont.) who was 4-for-5 with an RBI. Graham went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer. Bill Sloat (Woodstock, Ont.) and Chris Anderi (Tecumseh, Ont.) both went 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In his return to Niagara, former Brock captain Craig Jacques was 0-for-4 in a Mustangs uniform. Leading Western was Jim Phillips who went 4-for-6 with an RBI. Nolan Anderson, Paul Lytwynec, Shawn Robinson and Greg Telford all chipped in with two hits each in the loss.
Brock starter Paul McKenna (Oakville, Ont.) recorded the victory after throwing five complete innings giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out five. In relief, freshman Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) allowed one run on four hits over 2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Closing out the game was junior Evan DiMichele (Oakville Ont.) who threw the final 1 2/3 innings allowing one run (unearned) on one hit while fanning three.
Mustangs starter Bryn McDonnell suffered the loss allowing eight runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The Badgers next action is September 22nd when they travel to Toronto for a doubleheader against the defending OUA Champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
