BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Offence on display in OUA Baseball action
September 12 – Western @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (September 13, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks were very gracious hosts to the Western Mustangs in OUA Baseball action on Wednesday night.
The Golden Hawks made three errors and issued 15 walks which led to an 18-3 win for the Mustangs in one of the worst losses in recent years for Laurier.
Western got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning with no hits as Laurier starter Brett van Pelt struggled with his control and walked six Western hitters. Western rolled from there and scored in every inning except the fourth on route to the runaway win.
Laurier registered six hits with CF Jonathan Brouse and C Riley Robinson each recording two hits. Other hits went to DH Daniel Murphy and SS Colin McKeen.
"Just one of those days," commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne after the game. "We have put a lot of preparation and hard work into the season and tonight we looked like it was our first game. We couldn't do much right tonight, but the key for us will be how we rebound and learn from this. We have five games over the weekend and so there is no time for us to feel sorry for ourselves. We'll re-group and come ready to play this weekend."
Laurier (1-3) hosts Queen's on Friday night at Bechtel Park at 7 p.m. and then Toronto comes to town for a double header on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. The annual Alumni game will take place prior to the Toronto double header. On Sunday the Golden Hawks will travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders in a double header to finish off a very busy weekend.

Waterloo @ Guelph
The Warriors travelled to Guelph on Wednesday night to take on the undefeated Gryphons at Hastings Stadium. In front of the Guelph crowd, the Warriors handed Guelph their first loss of the season, taking the game 3-1.
Waterloo handed the ball to freshman starting pitcher Mitchell Kay for his first ever OUA start. Kay, who was recruited out of the Oakville Royals program, lived up to expectations, as he went five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out three, earning his first OUA win. Another freshman, Michael Parrott was nearly unhittable out of the pen, working four innings, allowing no runs on only two hits and picking up the save. Lucas Borges took the loss for Guelph.
Offensively, the Warriors were led by DH Daniel Baggio with two hits and two runs scored.
Head coach Tim Pegg commented after the game, “Since that first night in London when we made all those errors, our defence has tightened up and we have played great. That says a lot about these guys and how hard they've worked in practice, just getting their reps in.”
The win evens the Warriors record at 2-2. This weekend they host Western on Saturday and Queen's on Sunday. Both games start at 1 pm at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener.
