Both defending champion rinks got off to successful starts on Day 1 of the 2015 OUA Curling Championships, hosted by the McMaster Marauders at the Guelph Curling Club.
The Laurier women's rink — who won OUA gold a year ago — defeated Windsor 5-4 in Draw 1 before falling to the Western Mustangs 8-4 in Draw 4. On the men's side, the defending champions from Toronto defeated Algoma and Queen's to open the tournament 2-0.
The Golden Hawk men defeated Trent and Laurentian in their opening draws and currently sit tied atop the Men's A Pool through Day 1 with the Brock Badgers. Matching the Laurier men, the Badgers defeated both the Windsor Lancers and Lakehead Thunderwolves on Thursday. Three teams, Western, Toronto and UOIT share the spoils in Pool B after a pair of wins on Thursday.
On the women's side, Carleton shares the lead of Pool A with Brock and Toronto, while the Guelph Gryphons currently hold sole possession of the lead in Pool B after a pair of dominant wins over Western and Waterloo.
The host Marauders had a mixed day, with the women's rink splitting a pair of games while the men agonizingly lost both of their draws by a single point. Bouncing back from a 7-4 loss to the Windsor Lancers in the day's second draw, the Marauder women outlasted Laurentian 5-4 in the late session to level their record through day 1. The men, meanwhile, stormed back to face an extra end with the Voyageurs before losing 7-6 in the opening draw, before dropping another 7-6 decision to Trent in the third draw of the day.
Day 2 of action in Guelph gets underway at 9:00 a.m. Friday with the first of three scheduled draws.
