Ryerson adds curling as club program for 2015-16 season
TORONTO - Ryerson Athletics is excited to introduce curling as club sport beginning in the 2015-16 season. The club will welcome both male and female Ryerson students to participate in season-long, competitive league play and bonspiels towards the goal of fielding teams in OUA and CIS competition.
TORONTO - Ryerson Athletics is excited to introduce curling as club sport beginning in the 2015-16 season. The club will welcome both male and female Ryerson students to participate in season-long, competitive league play and bonspiels towards the goal of fielding teams in OUA and CIS competition.
The club will be led by head coach, Perry Marshall. Marshall is a career, NCCP certified coach, having coached teams and athletes in curling as well as baseball and hockey. Marshall is a former two-sport elite athlete and is an active competitve curler at the local, regional and provincial levels. He currently coaches teams who participate in the Ontario Junior Curling Tour and in the Ontario Curling Association (OCA) provincial championships.
The club will partner with the Leaside Curling Club (Millwood Rd. & Laird Rd.), which is home to over 900 members, as the home ice of the team for training and competition. The club has a very competitive men's and women's section that the Ryerson team will compete in as preparation for the annual OUA championships in February each year.
Student-athletes interested in this competitive curling club should have; experience as or a desire to be a competitive curler, able to meet the student athletic and academic standards of the University and the OUA to participate in team sports, able to fully commit to the annual team operational plan of weekly competitive play, regular on-ice and off-ice training, participation in OUA-sponsored weekend bonspiel events and the annual OUA championships and, be selected as a member of the team at the annual tryouts in September.
An information session for interested, current Ryerson students is planned for Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in the Blue & Gold Room (MAC3310, 3rd floor). An additional information session will be scheduled for early September. Tryouts will be held at the Leaside Curling Club starting Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. League play will commence for the men's team on Tuesday, September 29 and for the women's team on Wednesday, September 30.
