Two quarterfinal blowouts set the scene on the women's side, while Toronto out-duelled Lakehead for a place in the men's semifinals on day four of the OUA Curling Championships at the Guelph Curling Club.
There was no need for a tiebreaker on either side of the event, as Laurier and Brock earned automatic berths in Monday's semifinals as women's pool winners. The Brock similarly advanced directly to the semifinals along with the Western Mustangs.
While Sunday's women's quarterfinals were never in doubt, the men's competition saw two games go down to the wire. Carleton's women cruised to a 7-1 win over the Western Mustangs, blowing the match wide open with a three-point end in the fifth. The Guelph Gryphons did much of the same against Toronto, rebuilding a lost lead in the fourth end and carrying that momentum to a 7-3 victory.
Those results set up a first semifinal between Laurier and Carleton and a second between Brock and Guelph, with both getting underway at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
Meanwhile, both successful men's teams on Sunday found their paths more difficult. The Varsity Blues needed a bonus ninth end to score one and edge past the Lakehead Thunderwolves, while Laurier built a 5-1 lead through four ends and hung on for the eventual 5-3 win.
Toronto will meet the winners of Pool B, the Western Mustangs in the first semifinal, while Laurier battles the Pool-A-winning Brock Badgers.
