MOTT HELPS GRYPHS STAY UNBEATEN WITH LONG-RANGE SHOW

First-year guard Jay Mott showed off his long-range stroke last Wednesday as the Guelph Gryphons earned a tough 66-63 home victory over the Windsor Lancers. The Toronto native buried five of his eight three-point attempts, and added a single free throw, for a team-high 16 point in the win, Guelph’s fifth in a row to begin the season. Aron Bariagabre added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Gryphons. Kevin Kloostra led the Lancers with 20 points, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

The McMaster Marauders won their third and fourth consecutive games this past week, beginning with a tight 98-94 victory in a shootout with the Waterloo Warriors at the Burridge Gym. Five Marauders hit double-digits in points, led by star forward Adam Steiner, who had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Katz chipped in 19 and added six rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Despite the win, Coach Joe Raso’s team had a tough time controlling the Waterloo duo of Graham Jarman (29 points) and Chris Edwards (22 points and 10 boards). Jarman was 10-for-15 from the field, including a perfect three of three from the three-point range, while Jarman was 7-for-10 from the floor. He was good on three of his four attempts from long range. McMaster improved to 4-2 on the year with an 87-80 win over the Lancers Saturday. Katz and Steiner led again, scoring 23 and 19 points respectively, while Robert Scully added 16. Ryan Steer poured in 20 for Windsor. Detroit native Hoy Monk had 17, with six rebounds, three assists and a steal.

All-star Kevin Stienstra had a hot hand Wednesday, shooting 77 per cent from the field for a game-high 21 points to help the Brock Badgers to a 70-54 win over the struggling Western Mustangs. The fifth-year Vineland, ON native hit 10 of 13 shots and added five rebounds in the win. Reigning OUA male athlete of the week Brad Rootes had 18, with eight boards and five assists. Rootes was a terror on the defensive end making eight steals on the night. Bradley Smith led Western with 14 points. The Mustangs are 1-5 on the year in the basement of the OUA West standings. Rootes and Stienstra combined for 39 points three days later against Waterloo but other than 13 points from two-sport freshman Mike Kemp, the Badgers had little going offensively, dropping a 68-66 decision to the Warriors in St. Catharines. Jarman led Waterloo with 17 points, while Michael Davis and David Burnett added nine each in a more balanced attack. Edwards had a game-high 13 rebounds. Stienstra is second in OUA scoring, averaging 20 ppg.

Lakehead began the 2005/06 season with a brutal schedule that translated into four losses out of the gate but the Thunderwolves finally got into the win column with a pair of road victories over the Laurier Golden Hawks this past weekend. Third-year guard Kiraan Posey scored 22 points with five rebounds and three blocks as Lakehead defeated the Hawks 72-67 Friday in Waterloo. Vaughn Daley had 14 for the Wolves, while Bert Riviere led Laurier with 15 points on six of nine shooting. Posey had another 20 the following day to go along with seven rebounds five steals and a block in a 75-71 Lakehead win. Posey hit 10 of his 11 free-throw attempts. Scott Seely was perfect in three attempts from the three-point line and six shots from the stripe, finishing with 19 points.

The nationally-ranked Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees continued to roll in the East as both undefeated powerhouses feasted on the Queen’s Golden Gaels and RMC Paladins. Carleton defeated Queen’s 67-44 Friday, led by Daron Leonard’s 17 points, which came in just 15 minutes of play. The Ravens then beat RMC 82-34 to end a successful stint in Kingston. Fourth-year guard Pat Ross had 15 points for Carleton, all coming from beyond the three-point line. Ross was 5-for-10 from long range. Ottawa posted similar scores, defeating RMC 78-40 Friday and then getting past the Gaels 60-47.Chris McLeod led the Gee-Gees with 12 against the Paladins, while Marko Jovic scored a game-high 13 in the win over Queen’s. Both teams from the nation’s capital are 6-0 at the top of the East Division.

Ben Palmer had 22 points and Matt Brown added 19 as the Laurentian Voyageurs beat the Ryerson Rams 67-55 Friday in Toronto. Laurentian then fell 62-49 to the Toronto Varsity Blues the following night. Toronto started the weekend with an 86-70 win over the York Lions Friday. Dwayne Grant paced the Blues with 20 points. OUA scoring leader Dan Eves had a tough shooting night for York but finished with 24 points. He added 19 in a 75-59 win over Ryerson Saturday, while Tut Rauch poured in 24 for the Lions. Eves, a 6-7 fourth-year forward from Barrie, ON, is averaging 23.4 points in seven games this season.
