ZAPIOR SIGNS WITH IRISH SUPER LEAGUE TEAM
Dan Zapior, Lakehead University’s all-time leading scorer in men’s basketball, has signed a one-year contract with the the Merry Monk Ballina Braves of the Irish Super League.
Zapior, the ex-Thunderwolves team captain and a Thunder Bay native, attended Lakehead from 1998 to 2003 and amassed 2347 points in his career. He was an OUA First Team All-Star and the winner of the TSN Ken Shields Award in 2003. He graduated from Lakehead in the spring of 2003 with two undergraduate degrees.
Zapior played for the Basketball Club De Westhoek Zwevezele of Bruges, Belgium last year. Zapior said he is looking forward to the challenge of the Irish Super League. “I think this is a big step up from Belgium as the Irish Super League competition is much better. If I can perform well here, it can lead to bigger and better things in my basketball career.”
Zapior’s new team played their first exhibition game of the season on Monday and defeated the Sligo All Stars of the Irish First Division. Zapior picked up 25 points and 12 rebounds in his first game as a Brave.
The Merry Monk Ballina Braves are the newest team in the Irish Super League, returning to Ireland’s top league after a four year absence. he Irish Super League has 12 teams and the Braves play in the six-team North Conference. Ballina is a city of 15,000 situated in County Mayo in the west of the Republic of Ireland.
