DOORNEKAMP AND JEANTY PAVE WAY FOR UNDFEATED RAVENS
Second-year forward Aaron Doornekamp had 18 points and seven rebounds to help the top-ranked Carleton Ravens stay undefeated with a 91-54 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs ate the Raven’s Nest Saturday. Doornekamp was six of seven from the field and hit all three of his three-point attempts and all three of his free throws to cap an almost perfect shooting night. Fourth-year guard Osvaldo Jeanty scored 15 for the three-time defending champions, while Brody Bishop led all Voyageurs with 18 points. The victory upped Carleton’s record to 8-0 on the season. Jeanty also scored 21 points Friday to lead the way in an 80-67 win over the visiting York Lions. Doornekamp chipped in 14 points with game-highs 10 rebounds and eight assists in 38 minutes of play. Tut Ruach scored 21 for the Lions, while Santiago Tascon had 14.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees, the only other undefeated team in the OUA, also at 8-0, also had wins over the Voyaguers and Lions this week. Lindsay, ON naïve Alex McLeod hits three of six from beyond the arc to finish with a game-high 18 points in the Gee-Gees’ 76-52 win over Laurentian Friday. Ben Palmer had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Voyageurs. Against York Saturday, Josh Gibson-Bascombe scored 15 points, including three of four three-pointers, as Ottawa handed York an 84-57 loss. Ruach, second in OUA scoring with 21.1 points behind teammate Dan Eves, had 24 points on the night. Eves scored 13 in 27 minutes.
Guelph continues to lead the West Division, despite dropping its first game of the season Saturday in a 53-44 loss to the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines. Third-year guard Brad Rootes paced the 6-2 Badgers (second in the West behind the Gryphons) with 20 points, while adding eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. All-Canadian Kevin Stienstra added 143 points and dominated the glass against Guelph, racking up a game-high 13 rebounds. Nick Pankerichan led the Gryphons with 12 points and eight rebounds. Guelph began the week Monday with a 60-48 win over the Western Mustangs at Alumni Hall. Toronto native Aron Barigabre led the Gryphons in points with 13 and rebounds with, as he was one of four Guelph players to score in double-digits. Adam Ruickbie chipped in 10 rebounds for the Mustangs. Two nights later, the Gryphons got a big game from John Ross Bailey, who scored 23 points and added 11 rebounds in a 68-54 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks, helping Guelph get to 7-0 before the meeting with Brock. J.S. Esposito had 17 points for the Gryphons in the Laurier win, while Wade Currie and Todd Cooney had 10 each for the Hawks.
The Waterloo Warriors sit at 5-4 in the West after a pair of wins this week, 77-65 over the Windsor Lancers Wednesday and a narrow 77-75 victory over Western Friday in London. Fifth-year guard Gerard Magennis put on a show in the Windsor game, going a perfect 6-for-6 from long range and finishing with 28 points on the night. Michael Davis and Graham Jarman had 18 points apiece for the Warriors against the Mustangs.
In other OUA action Friday, the Ryerson Rams beat the RMC Paladins 82-50, the Toronto Varsity Blues got by the Queen’s Golden Gaels 59-50 and the McMaster Marauders won the first of two meeting with the Lakehead Thunderwolves on the weekend, 77-69 in Thunder Bay. On Saturday, McMaster took the rematch 79-67, while Toronto handled RMC 77-32. Queen’s got 15 points from Glen Smith in a 71-61 win over Ryerson.
