OUA ANNOUNCES EAST MEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-STARS
HAMILTON, ON - With four teams remaining in the OUA West men's basketball division, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2004-05 all-stars and major award winners as selected by the coaches.
The 2002-03 CIS Rookie of the Year, Dan Eves, from York University, was named the OUA East Player of the Year. The third-year forward averaged 19.36 points per game, second in the OUA. Eves, from Barrie, ON, also received his first all-star nod in part for leading the country in three-point shooting at 48.5%. The tenth-ranked Lions, last year's national semi-finalists, have finished with a 16-6 record and are one win away from making their second consecutive appearance in Halifax at the CIS Final 10 championship tournament.
The top ranked team in Canada, the Carleton University Ravens came away with two selections to the all-star first team. Fifth-year guard Mike Smart (Napanee, ON) received his second all-star selection. The floor general of the two-time defending CIS champion Ravens is averaging 4.59 assists per game, third in the OUA. Teammate Osvaldo Jeanty was honoured with his first all-star nod. Leading the OUA in free throw shooting at 87.5% and fifth in scoring with 16.95 points per game, the Gloucester, ON native along with Smart has been instrumental in guiding the Ravens to another 22-0 regular season. York Lion Jordan Foebel's breakout season earned the Ancaster, ON native his first OUA all-star. Leading the country in rebounding (12.05 per game) and blocks (2.41 per game), the third-year forward was also fifth in the OUA in field goal shooting at 58.1%. Last year's OUA East Player of the Year, Kevin Dulude from the Royal Military College received his fourth OUA all-star. The league leader in steals with 2.67 per game and second in rebounding with 11.24 per game was also a factor offensively, averaging 18.86 points per game (fourth in the OUA). Dulude finished his esteemed career with the OUA career record in both points (2092) and rebounds (1165).
Tut Ruach garnered OUA East Rookie of the Year accolades, to become the second York Lion in three years to receive the award. The rookie point guard from Mississauga, ON stepped in to fill the void left by two-time OUA all-star Tom McChesney, who was lost to graduation. Ruach's 4.91 assists per game (second in the OUA) and 85.5% from the free throw line (fourth in the OUA) helped the Lions remain one of the top teams in the OUA as they look to secure their second straight berth to the CIS national championship.
Defensive Player of the Year from the East division is Neal Dawson from Queen's University. The third-year forward from Ottawa sat third in the nation with 2.18 blocks per game and sixth in the OUA with 7.45 rebounds per game. Offensively, Dawson's team-high 12.7 points per game earned him a second team all-star selection.
For the fourth time in five years, Carleton head coach Dave Smart was named OUA East Coach of the Year. The 2002-03 CIS Coach of the Year led the Ravens to their second straight perfect 22-0 regular season, a number one ranking in Canada that they did no relinquish all season and are currently on a 72-game winning streak in OUA/CIS regular and post season games.
The Ravens and Lions host OUA East basketball semi-final games this Saturday as the OUA basketball playoffs, presented by Investors Group, continues.
