W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Western shutouts out Laurier for a draw

The floodgates finally opened for the Ryerson women's soccer team on Wednesday night, scoring three goals in a 3-1 victory over the Trent Excalibur.

The Rams [1-1-4] notch their first win of the season, handing the struggling Excalibur [0-5-1] their fifth loss of the season.  Ryerson had a strong start and carried the momentum all the way through.

Andrea Raso scored two goals in the first half, bringing to her team lead to three.  Raso took advantage of an out-of-position Trent keeper to pot her first and added another long-range goal, dipping into the bottom corner.  Looking for a new hat collection, Raso almost completed the trick on several chances. 

Calaigh Copland, with her second of the season, had the other goal for Ryerson, while Keelan Drumm responded for Trent.

Shannon Cosgrove, a first-year right-winger, sat out the contest after sustaining a concussion against Toronto on Sunday.  Defender Julia Rao left the game and stayed out, but only as a precaution as the team expects her to be fit to go for the next game.   

 
Waterloo Warriors @ York Lions
 
The Warriors downed the York Lions 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Toronto picking up their second straight victory.  After falling to the Lions 1-0 this past weekend, the black and gold got the revenge they were looking for.

Scoring for the Warriors was fourth year standout Tara Chadwick (Stratford, Ont.) with her third goal of the season already topping her 2009 season total.  Tallying the game winning goal was fourth year midlfielder Nadine Parker (Brampton, Ont.), her first of the season.  Scoring the opening goal of the game for the Lions was Alicia Donaldson (Mississauga, Ont.)

The Warriors (2-3-1) look for their third straight victory as they host the winless Brock Badgers (0-3-1) on Sunday, September 26 at the Columbia Icefields.  The Lions (1-4-0) travel to Waterloo to face the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks (5-0-1).
 
 
Brock Badgers @ McMaster Marauders

In their first meeting of 2010, the McMaster Marauders defeated the Brock Badgers 2-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium earlier tonight.
 
Sophomore fielder Tara Dawdy (Burlington, Ont.) and veteran midfielder Karli Swatridge (Kitchener, Ont.) both scored for McMaster in the win.
 
Dawdy is currently in a multiple way tie for second place in the league for the three goals she has scored this season.
McMaster (4-1-1) jumps to second place in the OUA with 13 points while Brock (0-3-1) is tied for last place with Trent (0-5-1).
 
 
Western Mustangs @ Laurier Golden Hawks
 
The No. 3 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team (5-0-1) battled the University of Western Ontario Mustangs (1-3-2) to a 0-0 tie on Alumni Field.

Laurier started the match playing a ball possession game and out shot the visitors eight to one in the first half. Western had a strong performance in the second, with five shots on net to the Hawks four. Overall, Laurier out shot the Western 12-6.

Top shooters for the Hawks were Alyssa Lagonia (Kitchener, Ont.) with four shots and Julia Marchese (Oakville, Ont.) with three. Marchese had the Hawks best chance to score late in the second when she fired a shot off the post. For the Mustangs Jenna Schroeder (Sudbury, Ont.) led the team with two shots.

Laurier netminder Tristin Vogel (Collingwood, Ont.) made six saves in the tie, while Western goalie Melanie Oberholzer (Kitchener, Ont.) turned away seven.
